Module 8: Multi-Variable Categorical Data
Learning Goal
The student is expected to summarize and
interpret categorical data and relative frequencies,
as well as recognize association and trends in data.
Essential Questions
1.
2.
3.
How can categorical data for two categories be
summarized?
How can you use multi-variable categorical data to
solve real world problems?
How can you recognize possible associations and trends
between two categories of categorical data?
Unit Overview
This unit focuses on statistical models for bivariate categorical
and quantitative data. The unit addresses representing,
measuring, and interpreting data, as well as determining
categorical data and interpreting numerical data on two
variables.
Vertical Progression
MAFS.8.SP.1.4 In Grade 8, students understood that patterns of association can also be seen in bivariate categorical data, constructed and interpreted a two-way table summarizing
data of two categorical variables collected from the same subjects, and used relative frequencies calculated for rows or columns to describe possible association.

MAFS.9-12.S-ID.2.5 (DOK 2) Summarize categorical data for two categories in
two-way frequency tables. Interpret relative frequencies in the context of the
data (including joint, marginal, and conditional relative frequencies). Recognize
possible associations and trends in the data. (conceptual) Quick Reference Sheet
