This feast is a sister to last week’s feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an “epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism. The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also, through the “bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. THE CHURCH OF SAINT ANSELM MISSION STATEMENT We are a Roman Catholic family of believers committed to following Jesus by welcoming, celebrating, caring, evangelizing and growing in His image. LicenSing 601922. _____THE LITURGY of THE WORD_____ PENITENTIAL ACT (A) (CONFITEOR) I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (striking their breast, all say) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. PENITENTIAL ACT (B) Priest: Have mercy on us, O Lord. People: For we have sinned against you. Priest: Show us, O Lord, your mercy. People: And grant us your salvation. GLORIA Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. PSALM O BLESS THE LORD, MY SOUL. Used with permission. LicenSing 601922 THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (BOW) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Monday we begin Ordinary Time which will continue until February 10, Ash Wednesday. Yes, Easter is early this year, March 27. Special thanks to all of you who helped us celebrate Christmas. At all the Christmas Masses we distributed to each family, Matthew Kelly’s book “Rediscover Jesus.” We had ordered 1,400 books, but ran short right during distribution after the 10:30 Mass on Christmas Day. So if you did not get your copy, or if you were out of town during Christmas, we have ordered additional copies. They should arrive any day now. Stop at the desk in the baptistery and add your name to the list. For those of you who read my column last week, you may have noticed that I referred to a “blurb” about Grateful Giving in the bulletin. Unfortunately that blurb never found its way into the bulletin. But I do appreciate the fact that many of you looked for it. It is in today’s bulletin. It is easy to do. I support the parish that way and I think you will find it as smooth as silk. Learn how your gift from an IRA may be free from federal income tax. A gift from your IRA qualifies as your required minimum distribution, saves tax dollars for you and helps to further the mission and ministry of our Parish. Because this law has been made permanent, it will make planning for charitable gifts from your IRA easier. We appreciate all the various ways that folks support the mission and work of the parish. This is one way that can have tax advantages for some members of the parish. Another way to support the parish is by transferring appreciated stock to the parish. The parish maintains a brokerage account to be able to accept donations of stock or mutual fund shares. Upon receipt of the shares, the parish liquidates the shares and transfers the funds to the parish operating account or restricted fund if so designated. Transferring appreciated stock could also have tax advantages for you. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about either of these opportunities. Often at the beginning of a new year is a time to review and update important documents, like wills and estate plans. Imagine a gift that gives forever. That's exactly what a planned gift to our parish endowment fund can do. What you give today will strengthen our parish by providing perpetual financial support. Also Finance Council members will be in the baptistery after the Masses the weekend of January 23-24 to answer any questions on the annual report that was mailed to you in the parish newspaper. Well that’s all I know for now. Every time I get an email from the Team, I realize something more about following Christ in forming disciples. As one disciple to another, I see this as a lifelong learning process! Authors, Nick Wagner and Diana Macalintal wisely reflect often on the Church’s documents. Several of their recent articles made me think. Our job in the initiation journey is to form disciples not scholars. But, “How do we do this?” I ask myself. Another article was ripe with ideas on becoming disciples. These ideas apply not just to catechumens but to seasoned Catholics, you and me. Pope Francis was quoted, exclaiming about Psalm 103:3-4, “He forgives all your iniquity, he heals all your diseases, he redeems your life from the pit, he crowns you with steadfast love and mercy.” Pope Francis in the Face of Mercy, follows this Psalm with action steps on wearing the crown of mercy. He highlights Scripture verses that explain this. Here they are: • • • • • • • • Executing justice for the oppressed Giving food to the hungry Setting prisoners free Opening the eyes of the blind Lifting up those who are bowed down Upholding the widows and orphans Binding the wounds of the injured Healing the broken hearted The Holy Father continues that, “The mercy of God is not an abstract idea, but a concrete reality with which he reveals his love as that of a father or mother,” so in love with their child. He says “this love, gushes forth from parents naturally, full of tenderness, compassion, indulgence and mercy.” God loves us that way too, and we are called to be that loving for each other and for anyone seeking faith. As Church, we are meant to shower love, compassion, and mercy on believers and the whole world. Pretty amazing isn’t it? I know God loves us unconditionally, and I know he is asking this of all of us. This is how he forms us, his church: with love and mercy gushing. That’s a new year’s resolution like none other to me!
