Course Description: Offered in response to need and interests of students and members of business and the community. Various topics will focus on development of practical Spanish-speaking skills and cultural awareness. A student may repeat this course, under different topics, for credit up to a maximum of 12 credit hours. Students who want to take for credit the next course in the sequence must complete this course with a grade of “C” or better. Statement of Prerequisites: Must be 18 years old by 1 January of the year in which this class is offered, must have taken both SPAN 2410 and SPAN 2420 and passed them with a grade of “C” or better, and must be able to spend a minimum of three weeks in Oaxaca, Mexico. Goal: Through total immersion in the Spanish language for three weeks and through formal instruction by native Spanish speakers in grammar, vocabulary, and conversation, students will successfully improve their level of competency in the communication skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Outcomes: To meet the national standards (ACTFL Novice Mid - Intermediate High) according to the beginning placement of the student, students will ACTFL Novice Mid: • recognize and understand commonly used words, phrases, and expressions; • use visual and contextual clues to assist in comprehension; • sometimes recognize previously learned material when presented in new contexts; ACTFL Novice High: • recognize and understand a variety commonly used words, phrases, and expressions; • recognize previously learned material when presented in new contexts; • use background experience and contextual clues to supply the meaning of unfamiliar material; ACTFL Intermediate Low-Mid: • recognize and understand an increasingly broad range of commonly used Spanish words, phrases, and expressions; • recognize previously learned material when presented in new contexts; • use background experience and contextual clues to infer the meaning of unfamiliar material and to anticipate story direction in narrative texts; • comprehend Spanish spoken at an average pace; • identify main ideas of a text by using reading strategies such as gleaning information from the first and last paragraphs; • create written and oral presentations; • write and speak in Spanish at a level a native speaker can comprehend; SPAN 2495-01 Summer, 2010 1 ACTFL Intermediate High: • recognize and understand an increasingly broad range of commonly used words, phrases, and expressions, including high-frequency idiomatic expressions; • recognize previously learned material, even in unfamiliar contexts; • identify the main idea of a text by using reading strategies such as gleaning information from the first and last paragraphs; • use background knowledge and contextual clues to infer the meaning of unfamiliar material and to anticipate story direction in narrative texts; Methodology: immersion in Spanish through lecture, conversation in pairs or small groups, computer lab, films, excursions to archaeological sites; classes in cooking, salsa and dance, ceramics, etc. Evaluation Criteria: The native Spanish speaker at URSE (Universidad Regional del Sureste) in Oaxaca will evaluate the students’ daily progress in the Spanish language. The Casper College instructor will consult with the URSE instructor before determining a final grade. Additionally, the Casper College instructor will submit the final grade which will also include the following components: attendance, participation, and keeping a journal. Daily attendance to all classes and excursions is mandatory. Attendance and participation together are 60% of the total grade. Each class missed will result in a deduction of 4% from the total grade. Classes missed due to illness will be dealt with on an individual case basis. • The remaining 40% of the total grade will be calculate from the URSE instructor’s evaluation of the students’ daily progress. • Casper College GRADING SCALE Letter grade and percentage equivalent A 90%-100% B 80%-89% C 70%-79% D 60%-69% F <60% • Required Text, Readings, and Materials: Required materials will be announced after we arrive in Oaxaca. Class Policies: Our safety in Oaxaca is paramount! Therefore, you must always have a “buddy” and an URSE-supplied cell phone with you when you leave the apartment complex. This includes going to and from class, religious services, the grocery, the Zócalo, the ATM, post office, anywhere, even if only “for a minute.” You will be issued keys to your apartment and the outside gate. If you should lose a key, report the loss immediately tot eh apartment office. Guests (with exception of URSE administrators) are not allowed inside the apartments; you may entertain them in the courtyard or on the apartment patios, but they must leave the premises by 7:30 PM. You must carry a copy of your passport with you at all times. Please loc the original passport, your exit visa, and you plane ticket in a safe place within your apartment. This syllabus is not negotiable. However, assignments are subject to revision and or deletion based upon the instructor’s assessment of needs and progress of the class working from this syllabus. Please retain this syllabus at least until you have graduated. It is your copy of the course requirements and SPAN 2495-01 Summer, 2010 2 material that you may need to document when transferring to other schools or when applying for graduate school or employment. Last Date to Change to Audit Status or to Withdraw with a W Grade: Because this class is in Mexico and is for only three weeks, students must change to audit status or withdraw no later than one week before departure from Casper. Chain of Command: If you have any problems with this class, you should first contact the instructor to attempt to solve the problem. If you are not satisfied with the solution offered by the instructor, you should then take the matter through the appropriate chain of command starting with the Department Head/Program Director, the Dean, and lastly the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
