A MESSAGE TO
THE COMMUNITY
We are walking in many new
directions as we move forward with new
opportunities. Our wildly successful
employee weight loss program (we
lost 417 pounds!) this spring has been
followed by a virtual walk-across-America
steps challenge. The challenge is 90 days
for our teams working collaboratively to
complete a virtual trip across the country
using their cumulative walking steps.
To best service our patients and
community, strategic planning steps
for Hansen Family Hospital and clinics
continue into summer as we work with our
board, physicians, employees, leaders,
patients and community representatives
to determine where our efforts should be
focused.
Our goal is for our strategic direction
to reflect our newly stated mission
of inspiring wellness and providing
compassionate healthcare, and vision of
becoming the innovative leader in rural
healthcare.
Beyond the surveys and focus groups
behind such efforts we are listening
closely to our patients every day to hear
what is changing in your lives and families
so that we can better serve your health
and medical needs. Staying the same is
not an option so we are looking to our
community to understand your needs
and ensure we are moving in the right
direction with the services we offer.
New strides are also being made with
Mercy Health Network, our Iowa network
partners, as we welcome new members to
that partnership, and grow our relationship
with Mercy affiliates across the state.
Where is your summer taking you?
Hopefully in new, exciting and healthy
directions!

Our Mission & Vision
This spring, a team of hospital and clinic employees gathered
at the ECC Hamilton Campus to assess the Mission, Vision
and Values for Hansen Family Hospital. The team represented
a spectrum of experience across the organization, including
newly hired, long-term, front line and management staff along
with a provider representative and board trustee. The event was
facilitated by Jason Monarch, Executive Director of Strategy for
Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
The event began with a review of the previous Mission Statement
and Vision Statement developed in 2007, along with data
collected from a recent community input survey and the feedback
from team members. Through a series of individual and small
group exercises, new Mission and Vision Statements emerged
to reflect the current state and future direction of our organization:
2016 MISSION STATEMENT:
To inspire wellness and provide
compassionate healthcare.
2016 VISION STATEMENT:
To be the innovative leader
in rural healthcare.
These statements are key elements of the strategic planning
work currently under way, scheduled to be completed later this
summer. Knowing who we are and where we are going helps
our organization focus our efforts towards wellness in a rural
community, and to provide the compassionate care our patients
expect in innovative ways that help sustain our presence in our
community in the future.

Health Concerns:
Healthy Habits:
At my age, I am more focused
on developing healthy habits
to prevent health concerns in
my future. Being a woman in
my twenties, strengthening my
bone health is crucial to prevent
osteoporosis later in life.
I engage in weight bearing
activity and weightlifting 3-5
times a week to keep my
musculoskeletal system strong.
Getting adequate calcium and
vitamin D in my diet is also
important for my bone health.
What I can do to help prevent
disease and other problems in
the future. My family has a strong
diabetes and cancer history so
researching ways to help lower my
risk factors has become a priority
for me. Everything from what you
eat to what kind of lotion you use
can make a huge difference.
My lifestyle has changed
completely within the last
year. I’ve changed to a
grain-free and sugar-free
diet which has not only
helped me lose weight but
significantly lowered my risk
for diabetes. I have become
more active also.
Metabolism and weight
concerns, cholesterol and
heart disease. I’ve always
struggled with weight, or
eating the wrong foods and
too much of them. When my
weight creeps up, so does
my cholesterol.
Keeping up with annual
wellness exams for eyes,
teeth, body. Keeping my
mind engaged to stay
sharp. I take good care of
my skin and try to avoid
sun for long periods of
time.
Maintaining a healthy weight,
being aware of signs and
symptoms of problems with my
heart after open heart surgery
in December and being able
to exercise to keep my back
healthy so as to avoid yet
another back surgery.
I schedule a workout
time every day of the
work week early in the
morning so I know that
I will always be able to
get that in for the day.
I manage my high blood
pressure with medication and
exercise (walking/golfing). I
consider my knees and hips by
doing low-impact exercise. My
husband and I enjoy dancing
when we have the opportunity
which is great exercise.
Golf, walk regularly, annual
wellness physical including
a mammogram, I highly
recommend vaccines (flu,
pneumonia, shingles) for
people my age.

Dean and Violet
Kent recently
shared their story of
Dean’s unexpected
journey through
mammography
when he developed
breast masses
at the age of 80.
One Man’s
Mammogram &
Mastectomy Story
Discovering a breast mass at the age of 80 prompted
Dean, a cancer survivor, to seek medical attention
I
t was the kind of irritating pain that’s easy to
ignore. Dean Kent of Iowa Falls only noticed it
when he was strapping on his seat belt or lying
in bed. Just some sensitivity – the kind of thing
you forget about or brush off as insignificant.
But Dean, already a prostate cancer survivor at age 80,
didn’t brush it off. After consulting with his primary
4 // A HEALTHIER YOU // HANSEN FAMILY HOSPITAL
physician at Iowa Falls Clinic, Dr. Erin Schmidt, he was in
for a battery of testing he never expected.
A mammogram? An ultrasound?
“I thought ‘This is crazy!’ I even told the woman when I
went in, ‘This is dumb!’” Dean said. “But she said, ‘Oh, no.’
Since then I’ve found out about several other men that
have gone through this.”
While breast cancer in men is about 100 times less likely than it is
for women, it’s a very real threat to men’s health. According to the
American Cancer Society, 2,600 new cases will be diagnosed this
year and more than 400 men will succumb to the disease. About 1
in 1,000 men will suffer from breast cancer in their lifetime.
In other words, it’s only rare when compared to women.
Dean can now empathize with his wife when it comes to
mammograms. “The mammogram was kind of gruesome, I
thought,” Dean said. “My wife warned me it’s just like putting
yourself in a vice.”
Dean knew the tests were important and for him, the tests
identified a mass. After consulting with Dr. Mark Andrew in the
Hansen Family Hospital Surgery Clinic, Dean and wife Violet went
home to consider the options. He’d faced this kind of choice
before with the prostate cancer diagnosis in his 60s.
Dean reflected on his previous run-in with cancer, “They gave
me like five options and the last one was I could go home and
die. I said, ‘I don’t like that one.’ Two weeks later I had the surgery
and in those two weeks the cancer was growing. It was very
aggressive.”
Now facing the reality of breast
masses, ignoring the problem wasn’t
an option this time either for Dean.
“The longer I waited, the more it
seemed like it hurt me. I finally went
back and asked, ‘Have you ever done
this before?’” Dean said.
... I’ve
found out
about several
other men that
have gone
through this.
Dean Kent
The answer from Dr. Andrew was, of
course, many times. A date was set and a double mastectomy
removed masses from both sides of Dean’s chest this past April.
Dean was fortunate. He went through outpatient surgery at
Hansen Family Hospital and it was determined the masses that
were removed from both sides of his chest were non-cancerous.
He was quickly back to his morning coffee group routine. But
the taboos of a breast cancer threat as a man were apparent
throughout the process.
Violet admitted they still dealt with the stigma of a man having
a mastectomy. “Friends told us they thought it was kind of
awkward,” she shared.
Dean isn’t shy about talking about it. He’ll even show off his scars.
“You don’t hear about these things in men,” he said. “I never
expected I’d have something like this. At first I thought it was
nothing. But every time I put my seatbelt on or laid in bed … if
you have something bugging you like that, I’d say you’d better get
yourself checked out.”
One surgery and a couple post-op visits with Dr. Andrew and
Dean has, basically, a clean bill of health.
