Let Your Voice Be Heard
When people talk about women’s rights, it is usually about the freedoms given to women and girls
of any age or race. Women of every nation have fought for their rights. In some nations, women still
struggle for their own voice. In history, men have always had their own opinions, but the views of
women were just blocked out. Some of the privileges that men have always had, but women had to
earn, include the following:
•
•
•
•
•
•
right to be independent
right to vote
right to work with fair wages
right to an education
rights of marital status
rights of religious freedoms
Listed below are some famous women activists.

Discussion Prompt
For Teacher Use Only
Exercise 1:
Explain to your students exactly what an arranged marriage is and the different types that may
occur using the information below. Have a discussion about arranged marriages and how your
class feels about them. Come up with a “Pro/Con Chart” (see description below).
There are three kinds of arranged marriages. In a forced marriage, the parents plan everything,
and their son or daughter has absolutely no say in the matter. In a traditional arranged marriage,
the son or daughter has very little say in the marriage arrangement. They are allowed to call off
the marriage, but there is usually strong pressure from the parents to do what they have
arranged. Modern arranged marriages are also prepared by the parents. However, the parents
choose several people for their son or daughter to pick from. They are all sent on dates. Then the
son or daughter picks the person they like best. In this type of arranged marriage, the parents’
primary concern is their son or daughter’s wishes.
Exercise 2:
Directions: Have each student answer the following questions and then discuss them as a class.
1. Would you consider an arranged marriage? If yes, what type of
arranged marriage would you choose?
2. How do you think you would feel if your parents arranged
your marriage to someone you did not even know?

An arranged marriage is a marriage that is planned before the couple has even begun to date or
even meet. Most of the time, it involves the families of the arranged couple. These marriages are
not very common today, but they still do occur more often in parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle
East.
