Colony Declines- - After James Oglethorpe went back to England, the colony’s future begins to look bleak without his leadership and guidance. Soon after, many colonists gave up and returned to England or went to other colonies. Poor Economics: 1. The colony was not producing much so the export business was poor. 2. Crop failures and discontent among colonists made life difficult. By 1750, the Trustee’s ban on slavery was dropped. By 1752, the Trustee’s transferred control of the colony to the British government. Georgia then became a royal colony. After two decades, the “Great Experiment” was over.
