any companies, particularly those updating their processes or
looking for alternatives to CFCs, require current information on the types and suppliers of
solder pastes. The following data has
been compiled from CFC-LINK, a
PC database that focuses on the selection of CFC alternatives.
In assembling this data, survey
forms were sent to 21 companies that
manufacture solder paste. Each company was asked to submit product information on its 60140, 6213612 and
63/37 tin, lead and silver alloy
products in common flux formulations. The extracts of the manufac-

tomer's system requirements, incluc
ing an analysis of the PCBs to be a;
sembled. From this
alternate system
oped. The board
high enough to ensure a cost-con
petitive end product. After analyst
and layouts were presented and th
pros and cons discussed, the custom<
selected the revised approach to th
product's design. As project coordin:
tor, the external systems integratc
was responsible for coordinating th
activities and integrating the equipmer
of five different vendors.
The process line started with bare
board input and included top-sid
SMT; through-hole assembly wit
axial, radial and DIP componentl
bottomside SMT; hand assembl
(large connectors and adapters); wav
solder; in-circuit test; and board re
pair. One of the process flow im
provements suggested by the revise
configuration was the introductio
of parallel processing rather
sequential processing
he customer. Parallel processing inreased the customer's throughput
nd helped conserve floor space. By
:configuring the process line into
:vera1 zones, integrating applicaion-specific PLC control within each
one and, finally, networking the
:parate conveyor sections, the equiplent from multiple suppliers beame easier to interface. Control
osts for the line were also reduced.
ce the line was designed and the
ngineering support.
hrinking proportionately. When their
xpertise is fully used, equipment
ippliers/systems integrators can make
n obvious impact on developmental
ycles and implementation time frames.
'hey can also suggest improvements to
ianufacturing techniques.
With product life cycles also shrinkig, PCB assemblers must turn to
quipment suppliers that offer dediated integration services. To reap
le full benefit of their investment,
ich as higher quality levels, maxiium process yields, minimum prouction start-up times and the most
Ricient use of valuable manufacturig floor space, assemblers must inlude an experienced integrator in
ieir planning process as early as
ossible. This can make the differnce between successfully launching
product or going back to the drawig board to try again. In today's
impetitive environment, there aren't
iany second chances. LSI]

Conap’s conformal coatings are not general purpose coatings. They are designed
specifically and exclusively t o protect
printed circuit boaras d othe;electrical;electronic
components. That’s
their only field, and that’s why their performance in it is matchless performance proven over many years of service.

Perfluoronated CFC
Replacement Solvents
The Vertech line of solvents is based on
perfluoronated materials. These solvents
are non-flammable, evaporate rapidly,
have a low order of toxicity and make a
good universal surface cleaner. They offer a non-ozone depleting alternative to
CFCs. The Vertech Degreaser (no.
1691) is designed for removing lubricating fluids, hand oils, greases and similar
contaminants from metal, plastic, glass
and other types of substrates. The Vertech Defluxer (no. 1692) is formulated
to remove rosin-based fluxes (RA,
R M A and R), hand oils, silicones and
other common contaminants found in
electronic PCB manufacturing.

Prefluxed SIPAD PCBs facilitate the
application of high-density components
onto PCBs. Prefluxing the board at the
manufacturing facility allows the assembler to eliminate the screen and/or stencil process from the assembly area.
The assembler can receive the SIPAD
boards, peel the release sheet and place
the surface-mount components immediately. Fine-pitch components down to
0.3 mm may be hand assembled.
