“I think that
this school is
fair and knows
when to do
things.”
Key stage 1 and 2
curriculum
All class activities and lessons in both Key Stages
(infants and juniors) are taught using a balanced mix
of class, group and individual teaching methods.
Mathematics and English are organised in distinct units
to allow for progression and systematic teaching but we
also provide opportunities for pupils to use and apply
these skills across other subjects.
Reading, Writing, Spelling (including phonics) and
Handwriting are essential features of our literacy
programme.
At each Key Stage we aim to exploit links between
discrete subjects like Science, History, Geography,
Design Technology and Art and have created a topic
based curriculum to support this.
This multi-disciplinary and engaging approach makes
the most of every learning opportunity so all children
can experience success.
Each topic is research led with children suggesting
their own questions for study and starts with a WOW
event to ‘hook’ children into the learning straight away.
One topic ends with a fashion show, another starts
with a classroom ‘invasion’ or a trail of ‘litter’ along the
corridor. All designed to excite the imagination.
“I like this
school, the
children are well
behaved.”
“The school
has great
trips.”
“It is brilliant
10/10.”
Citizenship
Awards
We are proud of our tradition as a ‘caring, sharing’
school where pupils are taught to respect and support
the school as well as the local and wider community
through fundraising, reflective assemblies and the
chance to be part of our thriving School Council.
We are very proud of our achievements, which include Investors in People status,
the Arts Mark and Active Mark Awards, the Basic Skills Quality Mark, and
Sustainable Travel Recognition at the GOLD Award level.
“The teachers
are really fun
and have a
good sense of
humour.”
“This school is
a great school
and I’ll never
want to leave.”
We also teach through the SEAL programme
(Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) where we
help children form positive relationships and learn how
to handle their emotions. This approach is thematic
with a new topic each half term which includes
Good to Be Me, Changes, and Say No to Bullying.
from tiny acorns to mighty oaks
Assessment
During lessons teachers observe, listen to and question
pupils. They set and mark work on a regular basis and
deliver assessment tasks designed to highlight gaps in
learning, all the better to plan the next steps. Children
often assess themselves against short term targets
and identify their weak spots or strengths. Teachers
then summarise learning gains in Reading, Writing and
Mathematics and these contribute to the termly Parent/
Teacher meetings as well as to the comprehensive
End of Year Report written on each child.
School Aims
The James Oglethorpe Primary School aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum based on the following principles:
1
2
3
To deliver the National Curriculum to all pupils
through a broad-based body of skills and knowledge.
To help pupils to acquire the knowledge, skills and
practical abilities which are relevant to them in
later life and which will meet the needs of a rapidly
developing technological society.
To help pupils appreciate all forms and levels of
Human achievement.
4
To give each child a degree of responsibility
and experience of success which will develop
self-confidence.
5
To help pupils understand the world in which they
live, and to recognise the inter-dependence of
individuals, groups and nations.
6
To encourage respect for religious and moral
values, and tolerance of other races, religions
and ways of life.

Welcome to …
The Foundation Stage
The James Oglethorpe Primary School, where we
take a holistic approach to education, catering for the
well-being of pupils as well as their academic progress.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the time in
your child’s life between birth and age 5. At this stage of
their education children learn by playing and exploring,
being active, and through creative and critical thinking
which takes place both indoors and outside. At The
James Oglethorpe Primary School we strive to ensure
your child’s early years experience is happy, active,
exciting, fun and secure.
We feel this prepares children more readily for their
future at secondary school and for their working and
personal life.
We have a tradition of educating successive
generations of families, helping to fulfil our school’s
motto ‘From Tiny Acorns to Mighty Oaks’ and believe
that our school is a happier and more valuable place
because staff, pupils, parents and governors work
actively together in pursuit of the school’s aims.
The family feel continues as upon joining the school
every child is placed in one of 4 coloured ‘Houses’ each
named after a prominent place in the life of General
James Oglethorpe. Children collect House Points as
rewards and work towards the Challenge Cup.
We look forward to formally welcoming you into the
‘James Oglethorpe’ family.
“Our school is
very healthy and
we’re going to
stay that way.”
“I really like my
school and
I don’t want
to leave.”
School Mission Statement
‘We are committed to being an outstanding example of
a community which is self-evaluating, forward thinking and
values all those who make a contribution to its life and work.’
We seek to provide:
•quality and consistency, so that every child makes
good progress and no child gets left behind;
“We do lots of
sports and fun
stuff to help
us get fit.”
Extra Curricular
The school site is spacious with each classroom
overlooking our own playing fields and having access
to two playgrounds. We offer a brand new cookery
room, two libraries, an outdoor play area for Reception
classes and a wildlife pond to enhance our core
curriculum. We are well-equipped with technology
having computers in every classroom and in small
teaching areas, three suites of wireless laptops and
all classrooms can access multi-media projectors and
visualisers to maximise the use of ICT as a teaching
and learning tool.
Clubs
In addition to lessons there are a number of clubbased activities which the school offers outside the
normal school day. These include, at present, Choir,
Recorder Club, Bible Club, and Art Club. For the sports
enthusiast, there are Netball, Cross Country, Football,
Cricket, and Rounders clubs. We also have clubs run
by outside organisations which include Basketball,
Football and Street Dance.
•a secure foundation through learning and
development opportunities which are planned around
the needs and interests of each individual child and
which are assessed and reviewed regularly;
•partnership working with parents and/or carers;
•equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory
practice, ensuring that every child is included and
supported.
Swimming
Swimming lessons form part of the curriculum now in
all junior classes. Year 5 and 6 swim at Harrow Lodge
Pool while Year 3 and 4 use the pool at the local
secondary school – the Coopers’ Company &
Coborn School
What the parents say …
“My son joined James Oglethorpe part-way through the term as we had relocated to the area. Even though he was
very young and in the Reception year, from the moment I took him into his new class, he sat down and engaged in
the lesson and settled in immediately. From then on I knew he would be happy and he is.”
“I like it when we
do maths and I
like PE.”
Partnerships
We are well supported in our enrichment activities by
our local secondary schools who provide both on-going
and ‘taster’ programmes in Sports, the Arts, Maths,
ICT and Modern Foreign Languages.
Music Tuition
Children can learn a musical instrument under the
tuition of teachers from the Havering Music School.
At present, the instruments taught are violin, cello,
flute, clarinet, piano, brass. (Fees are chargeable for
instrumental lessons.)
Breakfast Club
The school operates a Breakfast Club before school,
Monday to Friday, for a daily charge. The club is run
by our own Teaching Assistants and offers different
activities each day. Breakfast food and drink are
provided, including cereals, toast, pancakes, fruit
juices, and milk/milkshakes.
Parents
The partnership between home and school is an
important ingredient in the life of our school as children
will benefit from our joint interest. Our active Parents’
Association organises fund-raising and social events
throughout the year.
What the parents say …
“I would thoroughly recommend this school to other parents looking to place their children in a caring environment that
offers a fun and full curriculum and well rounded education.”
“We chose The James Oglethorpe School because of the friendly feeling and the warm welcome.”
