Welcome from Mrs O'Neill
The new school term is now certainly underway! Our Reception children are in full time and
appear to be well settled and are already picking things up and beginning to recognise sounds
and letters, ready to start reading.
The reception staff were busy all week assessing the children so that they can pitch their lessons
correctly, meeting the needs of all the children in their care. We will use this data to measure
progress at the end of the year which I am sure will be outstanding!
The Investors in Children Assessor also visited school to see if we can renew this Award. We
are grateful for all the work Mrs Ward put into this with the children. Fingers crossed for a
favourable outcome!

Nick Toczek Visit!
As you will see later in this newsletter we also
had a visit from Nick Toczek – children’s
author and poet. He worked with Year 4
children and the older children in Class 16.
Each child received a free book signed by Nick
and we bought copies of his numerous books
for our library and class rooms. Read more

Stoptober October!
We are encouraging people to stop smoking for 28 days! Stoptober
is an England wide campaign calling on all smokers to quit
smoking, starting on October 1st and lasting for 28 days. The
campaign is being supported all over the country! Research has
found that if you can stop smoking for 28 days, you’re five times
more likely to quit for good. Making that step isn’t easy, but
knowing you’re not alone – that thousands of others have pledged
to quit too – can be a huge boost to willpower. Pick up leaflets and
freebies at the local Walk in Centre or your GP!
Nick Toczek Visits!
Nick Toczek is a poet and an author and /he
visited Atkinson Road this week to spend the
day with our pupils to help them create poetry.
He worked with Year 4 and Class 16 and
spent the day with the pupils doing a poetry
workshop. Then Nick did a the whole school
assembly filled with jokes, poetry and magic!
All the pupils loved having Nick around for
assembly. Nick was kind enough to personally
sign books for all Year 4 pupils. Year 4 spent
the rest of the week writing poetry!
Sponsored Walk Success!
On Thursday this week we held our first of
many family fitness events. This time it was a
sponsored walk where both parents and pupils
walked either a mile or half a mile together to
get active. Everyone loved to join in on the
day.
Thank you to all parents who joined in!

Outstanding Spoken English
exam results for our pupils
This week we had the pleasure in presenting
certificates to those children who, after a lot of
hard work and commitment, took the ESB exam in
the summer term.
The children were thrilled to receive their results.
‘Auditions’ for this year’s ESB club have started
and we are pleased to say the club will start again
on Tuesday 29th September with Miss Embleton
and Mrs Wease.
Swimming Lessons!
Class 9 have started swimming lessons at Elswick
Baths. Year 3 children swim twice a week, for half a
year, so they always make fantastic progress in this
vital life skill. However, the council wants to close
Elswick Baths! We are trying to find another pool,
but the children are also writing letters to try to
change the council’s mind. We would love to get
some help from parents, or from older pupils who
swam in previous years. If you want to join our
campaign please ask Mr Lewis or the office for
details.
What’s happening at ARPA? What’s on at Excelsior?
A reminder to Y6 children and their parents/carers
– it’s not too late to join the Duke of Cambridge
Award. It runs on Wednesdays from 2.10 – 4.10.
See Mr Baker if you are interested or would like to
know more.
Music Clubs of Brass, Recorders, Ukelele and
Violin have started for KS2 pupils. See Mr Clark if
you are interested. These run on a Monday 3.10 –
4.10.
Year 5 STEM Challenge!
An opportunity has arisen for Y5 pupils to be
involved in PIE’s (Primary Inspiration through
Education) first North East STEM Challenge
which will be based in Newcastle this
October. We are really excited about this
project and our aim is to encourage pupils to
explore and begin to understand the world
around them in terms of Science, Maths,
Engineering and Technology.
Throughout the day pupils will gain practical,
team work and leadership skills, increasing their
confidence in these subjects in a fun and
dynamic way.
