Kappa Alpha Alumni Association 2011 Annual Vol: 8 “KA Alumni and American Heroes” Features Updates News Events Networking Scholars Leaders Athletes Ryan Meister graduated ISU in 2004 with degrees in politics and government as well as finance and served the Kappa Alpha Chapter as President and Rush Chairman. While at ISU Ryan was on the track and field team, competing in the decathlon and served in student government as the Student Body President. After graduating from ISU Ryan went to work in politics as an aid to then State Senator Dan Rutherford, helping put into place a statewide organization that eventually helped Illinois Treasurer Rutherford find success. He returned to ISU after working in state government to pursue a Masters degree in political science with a concentration in international relations, while interning for Congressman Tim Johnson. During the same period Ryan enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard with aspirations of earning a Green Beret and becoming one of the nations elite Special Forces soldiers. After the completion of his coursework, Ryan attended Special Forces Assessment and Selection at Ft. Bragg, NC, and was selected to attend the Special Forces Qualification Course. After the nearly two-year training program in airborne operations, small-unit tactics, demolitions training, sabotage, subversion, language and unconventional warfare, Ryan earned the Green Beret and was immediately deployed to Afghanistan. After five and half months of combat operations, and just weeks from coming home Ryan and his Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) went out to participate in a joint mission with the Afghan Commandos and the French Foreign Legion. On Dec. 17, 2009, SSG Meister and his team came under direct and indirect fires from Taliban insurgents. He, along with 4 members of his team, were struck by an 82-millimeter mortar, which nearly took his life. Ryan was hit with over 18 pieces of shrapnel and was medevacted to Bagram Air Force Base for emergency surgery. He was then transferred to Lahnstuhl, Germany, Andrews Air Force Base in Washington D.C. and eventually to Womack Army Medical Center at Ft. Bragg, NC. It took 8 surgeries and over a year of rehab to return Ryan to duty. On, July 25, 2011, Ryan and some of the members of his team were awarded the Croix de la Valeur Militaire, an award analogous to the Silver Star in the US for his actions against the Taliban and Al Qaeda elements in Afghanistan. The award was bestowed by French Ambassador Francois Delattre at a ceremony in the Ambassador’s Residence in Washington D.C. Currently Ryan is deployed overseas in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and is tasked with conducting Counter-Narcoterrorism (CNT) in Central and South America, and in the Caribbean. He serves on a Military Free Fall (MFF) or HALO team and has military proficiency in both French and Spanish. His awards include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Abraham Lincoln Medal of Freedom. He is a student at Liberty University and is working toward completing a Masters in Business Administration and expects to graduate in May of 2012. “I was shot last deployment.............it was a hell of a recovery but, I made it back with my boys for another go at it”, stated Ray. In December 2010, while conducting a counter-terrorism mission in Afghanistan Ray and the Delta Company, 2nd Platoon, 2/75 Ranger Regiment took on heavy contact at the entrance to a compound. A bullet entered Ray’s left side, right below his side plate, hit his hip, clipped his spine, and exited his right side. In short, it went straight across his back. “The men I work with saved my life. They dragged me away from the building, patched me up and got me the hell out of there. The doctors tell me that, if I would have stayed on the ground for 3 more minutes, I would have died. They also said that it was by the grace of GOD that the bullet took the path that it did since they've never seen a bullet take this path and a person fully recover. That was last December and, for all intensive purposes, I'm good.” Ray says, “So, in short, I have Delta Company, 2nd Platoon, 2/75th Ranger Regiment and GOD to thank. And of course my family.” Gentlemen Brothers Ray was awarded the Purple Heart Medal on April 29, 2011 at an award ceremony at Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington. During the ceremony, the Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Dave Hodne, pinned the Purple Heart Medal on Haldorson and shook his hand. Haldorson and other members of 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment were recognized for exceptional gallantry for their combat efforts in Afghanistan. This event marked the first medal ceremony the battalion ever held off-post in a public setting. “It’s too easy to do an award ceremony in the confines of the unit area in front of our families, but it’s important that the community see these guys, because they give so much to their country and their nation,” Hodne said. As well, Ray flew his parents Lee and Pat Haldorson to Washington to be present for the ceremony. Ray is a former Kappa Alpha Chapter President, a good friend to many, and we thank him for his service and commitment to America and all of us. Ray is currently deployed out of the country. Our hearts are with you Ray - be safe. From the Board Dear Alumnus, The Kappa Alpha Alumni Association continues to be one of Pi Kappa Alpha’s largest and most recognized Associations. My name is Matt Bernard, I was elected then installed as SMC of the Kappa Alpha Chapter in the spring of 2011. I appreciate your time and look forward to serving our beloved fraternity. Kappa Alpha Chapter continues to make improvements. Most importantly, we initiated 30 new members into our brotherhood during the last academic year. 19 men were initiated in the fall, while 11 men were initiated during the spring semester. Kappa Alpha received a recruitment award from the International Fraternity over the summer for increasing the number of initiates by 25%. Other improvements such as implementing a new financial management system and improving the house overall GPA each semester are just a few of our accomplishments. Many other fraternity chapters on ISU’s campus are unable to operate as fully functioning fraternities due to their improper actions. Our high standards and internal policies have put Pike in the spotlight with ISU and we are considered a model fraternity on campus. Other important highlights from last year include the implementation of a philanthropy event, called “Pikes for Presents”. This holiday date auction helps to raise money and presents for children who are not as fortunate during the holiday season. Our goal is to make this an annual event due to its great success. Athletics continue to be one of Pike’s many strong points, winning overall intramural titles in sand volleyball, base-ketball, and sports trivia. In the Greek division Pike won titles in basketball, indoor volleyball, flag football, and softball. We continue to dominate athletics at ISU and take great pride in winning! We’ve started off the fall 2011 semester strong, giving out 37 bids to ISU’s elite, if all goes well we hope to have a strong pledge class and look forward to what these new members will bring to our Chapter in the form of friendship and leadership to move Pike forward. As well, we are very proud to have adopted a new philanthropy event, which will be hosted at ISU’s new recreation center, called the “Taylor Trudeau Cycle for Life”. This event has become a nationwide Pike event and is in honor of a brother from the Gamma Mu Chapter at the University of New Hampshire, who passed away due to leukemia. I hope to meet many of you soon at the house or at an alumni event. The door at 904 West Hovey is always open to our alumni and I thank you all for your continued support. Today, Bartell, Barickman & Powell, LLP, employs seven people in Champaign and Bloomington. Jason has long been politically active, serving as the Chairman of the Champaign County Republican Party since 2006. In late 2010, Barickman was appointed to serve as a State Representative for the 105th District of the Illinois House. He serves a district composed of six counties in central Illinois, and includes parts of the City of Champaign. Barickman, a Republican, jokes that his desk in Springfield sits directly under a portrait of Abraham Lincoln “so he can watch over me and make sure I vote the right way.” Jason views his role in the Illinois House as a tremendous opportunity to serve the roughly 110,000 people he represents and has worked hard alongside other members of the General Assembly to cut state spending. He is an advocate of cutting legislator pay and pensions, as well as ending the General Assembly Scholarship program. After the redrawing of the Illinois legislative maps in May, Barickman announced he will seek the 53rd State Senate district in 2012. The district encompasses much of Bloomington-Normal (including all of the ISU campus), and spans from Eureka all the way to the Indiana border. During his campaign announcement, Barickman expressed delight in the opportunity to represent a district that included his alma mater and his home county of Livingston. Barickman is spending long hours on the road in the new district, which stretches more than 100 miles from end-to-end. His campaign message focuses on bringing effective leadership to a state that has been struggling to create jobs and balance its budget for the more than a decade. Barickman, 36, lives in Champaign with his wife Kristin and their son August Michael, who was born in May.
