GCSE Exam timetable
This is an extremely important time for all Year 11 students as preparations begin
for end of key stage 4 examinations.
Students should be putting aside time each day to prepare for their exams. They
should also have a clear revision plan that will now include the sessions on the
revision programme included in this booklet.
Teachers have planned and will deliver a series of revision sessions across the
subjects to support students to be well prepared for their exams. Each revision
session provides targeted revision that will improve the performance of students
in the exams.
Students who attend revision sessions in school get better grades.
This is particularly true when revision sessions are timed immediately prior to the
exam. Consequently we have put together a revision timetable that ensures all
students have the ability to benefit from subject specialists and focused revision.
Parents and carers play a very important role in supporting students in their
revision and helping students to perform well in their exams, we hope that this
revision guide will assist you to support your son or daughter.
Best wishes
Ms Boggis

Select 3: Select Examination timetable ( will appear once seating has been organised)
Step 4: Select Student Name and individual exams timetable will be available.
WOLLASTON SCHOOL
Step 2: Select Exams from the toolbar
familiarise yourself with this booklet, please see a few pointers below;
Exam Venues, Dates and Times – Final Timetable
All students will be issued with an Individual exam timetable at least 2 weeks before their first scheduled
exam. This is VERY IMPORTANT. It will tell students the:

date, time and length of each exam as well as telling them the venue

seat in that room they have been allocated.
However, as last minute changes sometimes happen it is important that students check the venue and seat
number the day before. The most up to date information will be on the exams notice board. This is in the
corridor behind student services.
Candidates are required to be at the correct venue 15 minutes before the published start time to ensure that
all candidates are seated promptly. This is very important to ensure a prompt start so that the finish time is
adhered to, allowing a reasonable break before afternoon exams begin or, in the afternoon, to ensure that
students can catch buses home.
The main period for exams is from the start of May until the end of June, but some oral and practical exams
will take place earlier and are not always indicated on the provisional timetable. Check with subject
teachers.
Arriving late for exams
If you realise you will be late for an exam, you should telephone the school immediately and get a message to
the Exams Office. It may still be possible for the candidate to be admitted if there is a genuine reason for the
lateness. However, exam regulations on this matter are strict. Any candidate arriving more than one hour
after the start of the exam will not be admitted. If the exam has finished, late candidates will not be allowed
to sit the paper under any circumstances.
Missing an exam
A student who does not turn up for an exam without presenting a doctor’s note, or giving evidence of another
satisfactory reason for a request for special consideration will receive a grade based only on those elements of
the exam which have been marked.
Exam invigilation
Adult external invigilators will supervise students under the direct management of the Exams Office. Once
candidates enter the venue they must follow the instruction of the invigilators at all times; failure to do so may
mean the student is removed from the venue, prevented from sitting the exam or disqualified.

ANDY HINTS AND TIPS FOR STUDENTS
•
Eat breakfast and ensure you get enough sleep
•
Don’t waste time!
•
Focus on what you do not know, rather than what you are confident with.
•
Use the school’s/exam resources
•
Start early!!!! (February half term is a must)
•
Remember to take regular breaks – 40 minute burst of revision is plenty
•
Create a timetable and stick to it (factor in down time)
•
Organise your revision using: subject folders, plastic wallets, file dividers
etc.
•
Use stationary to make it colourful
•
Have a sensible working area
•
Know your exam dates
•
Work in a quiet space
•
Study away from all distractions – the time will go quicker and you will
get more done.
•
NO MOBILE DEVICES
•
Have a designated study area that isn’t located in your relaxing zone
HANDY HINTS AND TIPS FOR STUDENT
Most importantly:
1. Make a list of all the topics/keywords you should
know for your subjects.
2. Think about how confident you are with each one –
you could RAG yourself against these.
3. Any that are RED or AMBER should be where your
revision begins.
Secondly:
Make a timetable which gives you time to create the
resources for the ideas/concepts/terms you are not as
confident with.
Lastly:
Stick to the timetable and make your resources!
HANDY HINTS AND TIPS FOR STUDENT
Deep Revision Period: February — June
Most importantly:
1. Find the dates of your exams and map them on a
calendar/revision timetable
2. Fill in the gaps so that you are concentrating on
subjects in the run up to their exam date.
Secondly:
1. Do something with your notes/revision.
2. Use the advice on different strategies to ensure
you are not just reading from text books.
Finally:
Walk in your exams knowing you have prepared well
and done as much as you can.
HANDY HINTS AND TIPS FOR STUDENT


Take the first letter from a list of words/idea/keywords
that you need to learn and make a word/rhyme/song
about them so each letter acts as a trigger to the words
you need to remember.
Your mnemonics can be written down in your exam paper
so you don’t have to keep them all in your head.
HANDY HINTS AND TIPS FOR STUDENT


Reduce key information to its smallest form. You might have to start with sentences
and then remake the flashcards once you have learnt more to just key words.
Use colours.
Use the flashcards to rewrite information on pieces of paper until you do need to look
at the cards to cover everything.
Doubled sided flashcards: Keyword on the front with definition on the back.

These could be used by friends/relatives to test you.

Creating the flashcards is just as good revision as using them.


Useful for?

Any subjects with key words/concepts

Maths/science—equations that you need to learn.

MFL—meaning of vocabulary

English—quotations
Useful website: Quizlet
HANDY HINTS AND TIPS FOR STUDENT
Really good for just throwing down on paper what you already know
about a topic.

Could then add to them with a different colour based on the information
you need to look up.

The information you had to add could then be used to create your flashcards.

In a few weeks time you could then try to reproduce your mind maps,
firstly without any notes and then looking at your completed mind maps.
The hope is you would then be able to complete more from memory.

HANDY HINTS AND TIPS FOR STUDENT

HANDY HINTS AND TIPS FOR STUDENT
You can either write them yourself or find loads of
ready made ones on YouTube/subject
specific revision sites.
The rhyme helps with memory and works in a similar
way to mnemonics
The link below is an example of a Chemistry song.
You could download them and listen to them or
have them playing in the background when getting
ready etc.
If you spend a lot of time listening to music anyway,
this could be quite a useful tool for you.
HANDY HINTS AND TIPS FOR STUDENT
and listen back to them
Exactly as it says: record your notes onto your phone and
listen back to them.
Have it on as you are getting ready for bed/school.
Do not listen to it for hours at a time: small chunks of
time work best for this, otherwise you will just switch off.
More will go in than you think.
This could also be useful for when you are waiting outside
HANDY HINTS AND TIPS FOR STUDENT
How to use/produce them:



They could be multiple choice; odd one out; one word
answers; unscramble the letters etc.
Handwritten or use an app.
Keep track of your scores so you know what you need to
work on.
Useful for?


Every subject!
Revising with friends/family
HANDY HINTS AND TIPS FOR STUDENT
The best way to test whether your revision is working.
You can do individual questions on a specified
topic or whole papers.
Request test papers from your teachers.
Some can also be found on individual exam board websites.
You could ask for the markschemes too or ask your
teachers very nicely if they would mind
marking them for you.
It is not about the final mark you achieve but more
about practising the exam technique
