Meeting the Common Core State Standards
This Really Good Stuff Catch-a-Shape™ Beach Ball
Set is aligned with the following Common Core State
Standards for Mathematics:
paper. For example, if they were to decide to sort by
size, you would draw one small, medium, and large
sorting circle. Instruct them to take turns finding
different shapes on the Beach Balls and drawing a
picture of that shape in the correct sorting circle.
You can repeat this activity with other ways to sort
to create even more sorting circles.
I Spy
Gather students, and place the shape Beach Ball in
the center. Explain that they are going to use the
shape beach ball to play a game called Guess My
Shape. To play the game: Toss the ball to a student.
Ask him or her to find a shape on the ball and try
to describe it the class. For example, if they found
a square, they would say it has four sides and four
corners, and so forth. Reverse the game, explain that
they are to take turns first describing a shape and
then another student is to find that shape on the
beach ball. Continue playing until each student has a
chance to do both.
In a large group setting, explain that students
are going to play an I-spy-like shape game using
their shape Beach Ball. Toss the Beach Ball to one
student and ask him or her to pick one shape. Then
ask the other students to try to spy something in
the classroom that is that shape. Indicate that
as they take turns, they are to announce, I spy a
__________ on the ___________ in our room. For
example, if one child picks a rectangle on the Beach
Ball, another student might say, I spy a rectangle
on the dry erase board. Continue tossing and spying
shapes until all students have had a chance to
participate.
Shape Pictures
Cut out different colors and sizes of shapes from
cardstock, and place them in a baggie. Distribute a
sheet of construction paper to students. Take some
shapes out of the shape baggie, and explain that
you are going to use only these shapes to create a
picture. Ask your students to identify each shape in
your hand. Model your thinking out loud for students
as you work to glue down each shape to create your
shape picture. For an even harder challenge after
you complete your picture, show them how to label
each shape in the picture. Call one student up at
a time to grab a handful of shapes to create their
shape picture. Remind them that they are to try to
use all of their shapes in their picture. When they are
finished, encourage students to take turns sharing
their shape pictures.
Sorting Circles
In a small group setting, ask students to tell you
different ways to sort shapes (color, size, and so
on). Ask them to pick one way to sort first. Draw
different sorting circles on a large piece of chart
Draw-a-Shape Reproducible
For independent practice and skill assessment,
have the students complete the Draw-a-Shape
reproducible. This will test their knowledge of not only
shapes, but sizes as well.
