The Racket - Salt Spring Tennis Association

The Racket
Fall, October, 2013
“ Why has slamming a ball with a racquet become so
obsessive a pleasure for so many of us?
It seems clear to me that a primary attraction of the sport
is the opportunity it gives to release aggression physically
without being arrested for felonious assault. “
…Nat Hentoff
Editor’s Sidebar: Well it is again a lively and long Racket…
Mainly because I have used a larger print size for the older adult readers in
our group and there is lots of white space and loads of pictures But mostly
is that there is lots of activity and news by the club… SSTA is a very vibrant
Club with lots and lots going on… what wonderful group of folks… and fun
to play with too… Enjoy… MCB [email protected]

It is hard to believe that a year has flown by since the Opening of
Centre Court: and what a great year it has been for Salt Spring tennis.
After our first wonderful indoor season we had a summer that was
positively made for tennis: a warm, dry and seemingly endless summer.
The summer “Drop-In” on Tuesday (Men) and Friday (Mixed) were both a
great success with the early birds starting by 7:00 a.m. Most days saw
three (and sometimes four) courts busy until well after 10:00 a.m. The
Ladies Drop-In on Thursday morning was slightly less busy but great fun
anyhow I am assured. These mornings have become the real meeting and
mixing place for our members and are the single best way for new players
or new members to get to know a large number of their fellows. These
mornings have become the real meeting and mixing place for our members
and are the single best way for new players or new members to get to
know a large number of their fellows. It is always good fun and all levels of
players, even the better ones among us, can benefit from the play.
Several of our players brought back prizes from the BC Senior Games.
Ann Stewart, one of the boldest of us all, was a winner there and also
captured a bronze medal in her group at the World Senior Games in Italy
this year. Ann and Ineke Van Hasselt attended the Games in Turin where
they played in 90 degree temperatures. Great fun Ann assures us.
Jennifer Morgan is our contact person for Senior Games. Wouldn’t it be fun
if we could get a dozen or more to participate in this year’s event in
Abbotsford I believe it is? If anyone is interested in playing men`s or mixed
doubles in the over 75 group let me know; we may be able to get
something together.
The coming of the rain this month just makes us feel all the more fortunate
as indoor league play starts for season two. Support for Centre Court has
been beyond expectations and even in the summer “off season” court
usage has been encouraging. It was brought into service several times to
salvage tournaments that would have otherwise been rained out; the latest
being the “Sadie Hawkins” event that was held indoors to the great
pleasure of players and spectators alike. (Enjoyable even for those of us
who were not invited to play by any of the ladies!)
While the men don`t seem to have been quite as active in off- island
tournaments the level of play has definitely improved. One look at the list
of players and spares for the Monday Night league and I begin to wonder
what the H*** I am doing playing with these guys! Still, they aren`t allowed
to actually hurt me and a little bit of humiliation may be good for me ( so
says… MCB ).
Just a thought… One of the best events the SSTA has ever staged was the
joint Golf and Tennis camp for Juniors. Sixteen kids had the chance to get
intensive, top level coaching in both sports. This raises the question of how
we can keep some of these kids playing…. How about a junior indoor
league? Perhaps the SSTA could split the cost of court time with the
parents ? Just a thought…
I am looking forward to more of Peter Schelling’s terrific doubles clinics
next week. This might help to get some of the older, slower members up to
speed for the coming indoor leagues. If Peter can`t get you keen and ready
to play no one can.
So – best wishes for a great indoor tennis season. I hope we will see a lot
of you out for Red Court drop-in tennis on Sunday afternoons. It is great
fun, good practice and lots of good exercise without having to run too hard
or too far… RR

Presidents Report
Erica Ross, President
[email protected]
It was a beautiful summer for lots of great outdoor tennis, and we were very
proud of the success of our first joint program with the SS Golf & Country
Club, the Junior Golf/Tennis Camp, held for two weeks in August. PARC
helped us out with a grant, and Pete Schelling and Steve Marleau did a
wonderful job, making it so popular we are already being asked when there
will be a sign up for the next one!
Now with changing weather and days beginning to shorten, we are looking
forward to shifting gears and
playing our winter leagues
and more games inside.
I am delighted to report that following a plea in the last ‘Racket’, Markus
Wenzel generously came to our
rescue, buying and donating an
AED unit for Centre Court! He
is pictured here with Derek Fry,
President of Lady Minto
Hospital Foundation.
Up to 20 members can RSVP
to attend a familiarization
demonstration. The date will be
announced soon, so watch your
Emails!
On the Money Front:
Doris St Germain
[email protected]
Now that fall has arrived, there has been an increase in our account activity
– mostly with the payment of league and block booking fees into our Centre
Court Indoor account. When all the league fees have been paid the
account will have increased by $6,048. The block bookings are all paid and
brought in $3925. The rains of September did help raise the court use well
above our projections, as did the Junior Golf and Tennis Camp held in
August. Our Centre Court ledger balance currently stands at $24,465.34
and our Reserve Fund is $677.86.
Between now and the end of the year we will add the Winter League fees
and Block Booking fees which are paid in mid December, as well as a few
receivables to our bank balance. Most of our annual expenses are paid
except for the booking site annual fee, leaving the usual ongoing
operational expenses to be paid to the end of the year. It will be interesting
to see how well we did with our first budget when we close the ledger for
2013. You will all have to attend the next AGM to find out.
The Club account has $2,561.54 as of September 26th. The funding of the
Junior Golf and Tennis Camp was managed through our club account and
operated on a budget of $5600 made up of a PARC donation of $2000, a
Golf Club donation of $1000, our donation of $1000, and $1600 in entry
fees from the 16 juniors who took part. It was a very successful venture and
all the expenses have been paid exactly to budget.
Our Summer BBQ costs were surprisingly low this year given that it was
very well attended – 93 took part, made up of 67 members and 26 nonmembers. The $130 from the non-members brought the cost down to
$2.07 a person the lowest we have had. It was a great day and our
member’s potluck contributions went a long way to feeding everyone with a
minimal contribution from our club account.
The club also paid the expenses of the booth at the Fall Fair because it
was since as a promotion for the SSTA. The net cost to the club for this
event was $244.76, but it did generate a lot of interest. We had a crowd
around the booth for most of the two days – mostly due to the attraction of
the really BIG tennis racquet and tennis ball. Since we have borrowed the
racquet a few times, the owners agreed to sell it to us for $100, and it has
been purchased by the club. You can see it in the Green Room – you can’t
miss it!
Good-bye and Hello:
Our wonderful
Treasurer, Doris St Germain, has relinquished
her Executive position at the end of September to
new Board member, Jeff Bee. He will have big
shoes to fill! Doris has had a steady, longserving hand on the financial tiller of the Club,
and was invaluable in helping successfully
guide us through the shoals and rough waters
of the MANY years of planning leading to the
creation of Centre Court.
She richly deserves a Break from all her hard
work on our behalf... but we hope she won't go too
far, and she will definitely have more time for her
game.
Heartfelt thanks, Doris.
We wish you All the Very Best !!!
Fundraising Activities:
Donations this year total $3,284.33. There is $1500 in the hands of Tennis
Canada that we are waiting to receive and the $500 charitable donation
through the Tennis Canada program is still available to you. If you want a
tax donation receipt for this year, contact Erica Ross soon.
“Guess the Number of Balls in the Bag”:
The “Guess the Number of Balls in the Bag” event at the SSI Fall Fair
raised $281.00 which was not quite enough to cover the $350 in prize
money that was paid out, but the event was just part of the plan to raise our
club’s public profile – which was achieved!!!
The balls = 1572

St Mary’s Paddle& Poker:
The St Mary Lake Paddle and Poker Run was held on August 5th prior to
the Summer BBQ and attracted 15 paddlers in 13 boats.
Through
sponsors and donations, the paddlers raised $3680 to help reduce the
building debt. There were no expenses for this event.
Annual SSTA Summer BBQ: August 5th

Membership News:
Doris St Germain [email protected]
The summer was a slow time for memberships since most of our members
had renewed their 2013 memberships. With only three more months in the
membership year we are sitting at 180 members, which is the same
number we ended up with for 2012.
Since the last Racket we have had four new members join the club – we
welcome Larry and Trish Kubal, Robert Sinclair and Catherine Patel.
There were several people who visited the club booth at the Fall Fair and
seemed interested in joining the tennis club, but so far none have done so.
The 2014 membership year is looming and for those who are heading
south, you should consider paying your membership now before you leave.
The fee is the same as last year – just $25 to be part of our fun and active
club.

The Business Women's League Outdoor ended in September – all had a
great fun. Look for the next sign-up for Outdoor in April… In the meantime
the “Fall Indoor league is up and running… The next session will be the
Winter (Jan –Mar) – Justene will be calling for players in December --- so
watch the emails…
Winter Leagues:
Justene Tedder [email protected]
Leagues are up and running… Thank you to all for your patience with my
first time sorting it all! It is complicated !!! The only league that was not
running was Thursday night Men’s - so hopefully in the Winter we can at
least get 4 guys going.
We didn't get a full complement of men for Tues evening mixed doubles
but we have enough keen ladies to keep it going well! Friday Morning mixed doubles is super popular - I may even been able to
expand that to another game if there are more ladies up for this league!
I will be taking names again in December for the Winter League (Jan –
Mar) – so watch for the emails.
We are always looking spares - so let Justene know if you are available!
Red Court Tennis:
The fun and confusion will be starting on the Red
Court again --- 2:00 – 4:00 pm Sunday afternoons – starting Oct. 6th …
There will also be a Thursday session from 7:00-9:00 pm – starting Oct.
10th and every Thursday after if there is sufficient interest…
$5/person to cover the court cost… Come on by and try it --- it is a great
work out for the body and the mind… but the shortcomings in both/either
are easily and cheerfully accommodated…It is Fun and a good workout for
reflexes and practicing you tennis shots… Did I say it is sooooo much Fun

Wimbledon Cup & Saucer June 29th – 9 am til’ noon
Bright sun broke out at last for the
annual Wimbledon cup and
saucer event complete with
strawberries and cream tea and
some play with the old wooden
racquets.
The results were very close with
the fewest games won being 14, the
most 19. The winners in a final

tiebreaker with wooden racquets were Markus Wenzel and Babette Arnold
over Denis Russell and Liz Anderson.
The best dressed as judged by Rose and Ginny were Denis Russell and

President's Cup:
Men’s July 27th
The men’s tournament was
extremely competitive with many
close matches, in a round robin
format. Coming out on top were
Peter Lamb and Allan Bruce with
Colin Ross and Sylvain Rouillere
finishing second. Peter and Allan had
previously won as partners in 2002.
Women’s July 28th
On Sunday twelve women played some
excellent tennis in five round robin matches, vying for the President's
cup. The final match decided the winners, who were Debbie Harris-Funfer
and Carol Wright. They just beat out by one game the runners up who
were Jenny Pickering and Marnie Naphtali.

Junior Tennis and Golf Development Program:

August 12th - 16th and August 19th - 23rd
saw a wonderful new event to introduce
tennis and golf to young players… The
event was booked solid within minutes of
being made public.. And the reaction of
the participants was wonderful and
enthusiastic… So it looks like it might
become an SSI annual tradition…
The Salt Spring Tennis Association (SSTA) and the
Salt Spring Island Golf and Country Club (SSIGCC) hosted
an
exciting joint program to further develop junior tennis and junior golf on Salt
Spring Island this past.
With a generous grant from PARC and additional financial support from the
SSTA and SSIGCC we were able to offer this program for the very
attractive price of $100.00 per junior for a week of superb tennis and golf
instruction.
The camps were based on a first come first served basis and available to
juniors 10 – 16 years of age. The participants were arranged into classes
according to age and ability.
There were two groups of four per week–one group having three hours of
tennis instruction in the morning and three hours of golf instruction in the
afternoon–and the other group doing the reverse.
Both the golf and tennis programs were taught by exceptional, highly
qualified, instructors, Peter Schelling and Steven Marleau. Peter and
Stephen were assisted by enthusiastic members of the respective clubs…
Erica and Fernando assisted Peter…
Each participant received a camp shirt. The
camp ran from 9am to 4pm weekdays. On
Fridays there was a delicious lunch provided

Gulf Island Open Tournament - August 30th to September
2nd
The Gulf Island Open Tournament was held over the Labour Day
weekend. There was a rather small turnout for cheering and watching
some great tennis. Only the men's singles was a knockout and
consolation, the other matches were round robins. We finished off with the
Finals indoors at Centre Court because of weather, - it worked very well
and may become a regular feature in the future.
Results as follows Women's Singles Winner - Elly McKeague,
runner up Jenny Pickering.
Men's Singles Winner - David Barclay (again), runner up Markus Wenzel.
Consolation winner - Michael Powell, runner up Michael Dafoe.
Women's Doubles Winners - Elly McKeague and Erica Ross,
runners up Justene Tedder and Jenny Pickering.
Men's Doubles Winners - Peter Lamb and Markus Wenzel,
runners up Michael Powell and Sam Mustone.
Mixed Doubles Winners - Markus Wenzel and Justene Tedder,
runners up Colin Ross and Erica Ross.
Sadie Hawkin’s - October 5th
The Sadie Hawkin’s tournament went very well - an overload of sweet
goodies to eat and plenty of good tennis. It was a simple format of two
groups of 4 teams playing 3 round robin games and a final 4 crossover
games, each being half and hour. Markus Wenzel and Justene Tedder
just triumphed over Patrick Lee and Ann Stewart for the grand prize of - a
chocolate bar each, to round off the sugar fix. Lots of fun and so many
great Hayseed costumes – it looked like the Clampett’s had arrived on
Salt Spring…

The Interclub season was great - fine matches with and against Oak Bay,
Gabriola and Langford. The matches with Oak Bay and Langford were
great mixers, but the match with Gabriola is full of cut-throat killer instincts,
and this year, the last match was won by Gabriola. So now Salt Spring is
the proud keeper of a fine gold-plated bottle opener, which is the prize for
the runner-up! All the players were chosen on a first-come-first-served
basis, and this year around 16 members were available to play. The
weather co-operated with the exception of our last date with Langford which is still to be arranged - and will take place when the Langford Club is
able to book space at
Panorama.

Pete's Tennis Tip
In Singles I was always told that :
The One Who Hits The Best Cross Court First,
Wins 75% of the Points.
Well, as a server you have the first shot.
The wide serve is your best shot, this takes the opponent out of
the court allowing you to hit to the open court.
A good shot to the open court gets your opponent running, and
when players have to run errors happen.
So get out there and start working that wide spin serve!

Fulford was busy this summer – tennis in the Valley is
beautiful in the summer and early fall… don’t forget to drop by and enjoy
it…
Portlock Courts:
Was her beautiful self this summer with the cracks,
sagging nets and flapping wind screens --- the old girl was the hostess to a
lot of fun and laughter. She saw some great tennis at the many
tournaments Jennifer ran this summer… It spells summer on Salt Spring…
Thanks to all who help make it our Home Court… or Court Home…
Centre Court: Thanks to Mark Cutten and Miro Cervenka for all their
hard work keeping the Court clear of the Wimbledown (ball fuzz)… Mark
has found a team of men that have volunteered to tag team over the
winter… But I am sure that they would welcome some help occasionally –
so if you are willing and able contact Pat – they can always use spares…
The bonus is you will always have a very appreciative end-users… Come
on and help out… Call or email Pat to volunteer and brighten her day…
Also everyone using the Court.. if you see something that needs to be
done or cleaned up (bathroom sink needs cleaning, the garbage needs
emptying, floors swept..) Please just take a minute and do it… It makes
for a lovely clean facility for all of us and reduces the workload on others…

SSTA Goes to Italy…
The World Masters games were held in
Turin. Italy. Blistering hot and idiosyncratically organized! Met lots of
lovely antique players, mainly from Australia, Brazil, USA - not many
Europeans as they knew how hot it would be! Chance to see some of
beautiful Turin. Ineke Van Hassely played in the mixed doubles with a
Canadian, and lost in a tie-break, and she and I (Ann Stewart) lost to two
Australians who eventually got the silver medal, and a pair from Edmonton,
to whom we lost in a tie-breaker. Very friendly, and good atmosphere! I
ended up with a huge bronze medal, after losing twice, and eventually
beating a lovely lady from Brazil. John came as my baggage handler (not
athletic supporter as rumoured!) and we had a great time.
