The Rebels and Outlaws are Coming!!!
Luckenbach is known for many things. One of the most
important is our music history. We were smack dab in the middle of the Cosmic Cowboy culture in the early 70’s. Fast forward
4 decades later and we are still partial to the outlaws of music.
Outlaws or rebels, refers to the fact that they do it their way.
They prefer the road less traveled and they fight to stay true to
their style. Radio play or not, these musicians cultivate an
underground society of true believers and followers.
lead singer for the Gougers, going solo last year, teaming up with
the likes of Jason Eady on a semi regular basis and eventually
finding her way as the matriarch of the incredibly talented all
female super group, The Trishas.

3RD SUNDAY – Thomas Michael Riley and Mike Blakely, Cowboy
Church 1-5pm. If you are reading this and you don’t know who
these two are…ask somebody! This duo and their friends have
become the Hill Country’s secret treasure.
2010 finds us with more music and events than ever. Every
month this year you will find at least one festival with an outstanding Outlaw or Rebel at the helm. Beginning in March, it is
only fitting that we kick things off with a full day of celebration
for Texas Independence. March 6th, Luckenbach partners
with the Former Texas Rangers Foundation, Lonestar Beer,
Gibson Guitars, The McKay Brothers, KR Wood and Doug
Moreland. We will hold a Flag Retirement ceremony at noon
with members of The Former Texas Rangers Foundation. An
afternoon of pure Texas Music follows. This is a great family day
in Luckenbach. Doug Moreland will be on site carving out a life
size Gibson Guitar with his chainsaw. The Lonestar Flag will
flank the body. Lonestar Beer and their Armadillo will complete
the "yard art" piece that will be permanently placed on property close to the fire pit. The Texas Star Trail ride will ride in around
5pm with over 200 Horses/riders and wagons. Dusty Britches
will once again host the evening dance.
4TH SUNDAY – Stephanie Urbina Jones 1-5pm. Stephanie brings
a Texicana element to Luckenbach this year. Armed with a new
CD and a statewide radio tour in the works, be sure and watch
this Mama fly. We are proud to embrace the heritage and culture
of Stephanie and the genre that is so uniquely ours, Texicana.
3RD SATURDAY – Outlaw Afternoons in Luckenbach! Join hosts
Brigitte London and W.C. Jameson as they bring outlaws from
across the country to the stages of Luckenbach. This is home,
this is who we are and you will not want to miss one single
month of this series.
Extra Special events coming up this year include -
APRIL 3RD – Ray Wylie Hubbard’s 2nd Grit n Groove… if you
were present last year, you know what’s in store. The line up
this year will NOT disappoint!
APRIL 17TH – Texas Hat Festival, a full day of dancing in the
streets with the likes of Gary P, Max Stalling, Deryl Dodd, Tommy
Alverson, Doug Moreland, Walt Wilkins, Kevin Deal, Micky and

makers/demonstrations. Ugly Hat contest and the Best Old Hat

and fun. Hayes has held Stingaree on Bolivar beach for the last
6 years. Due to the destruction by Hurricane Ike, it’s just not feasible to do it there anymore. Mark your calendars now and stay

Jimmy Lee Jones
Note: From 1961-1973, Hondo (nom
de plume, or alias, or AKA Peter
Cedarstacker) wrote a social satire column for the Comfort News. The fictional town of Cedar Creek and all of its
characters eventually became the real
town of Luckenbach and all of its characters (and Luckenbach has some real
characters!) The MOON reserves a special corner for Peter Cedarstacker,
Writer, as a corner of wit and human
insight for us today.

By Walt Perryman
Jimmy Lee grew up in Crane, a small west Texas town.
He learned how to play a right handed guitar, upside down.
His first job was throwing a chain on a drilling rig.
After work, he would grab his guitar and go to a gig.
He joined the Marines and did his patriotic chore,
Came back to West Texas and worked some more.
Me and Mama spent Wednesday of this week in
Luckenbach standin’ by the flagpole wavin’ at airplanes. You know, not many folks do that anymore…
If one of them airplanes waves back it makes you
feel strong and tall, like when me and Mama go riding down the highway and run over that little rubber
hose that counts cars and goes ‘blump-blump’. Boy, it
makes us sit tall and look around to see if anybody is
watching, because we very seldom ever get counted
in Luckenbach.
We’ve discovered that Luckenbach, on the globe,
is right in the middle of the world and we figure that
if God hadn’t intended for us to be the center of the
world he wouldn’t have put us here.
Luckenbach is a state of mind.
Luckenbach is a free state. The present principality of Luckenbach was nearly part of the United
States but when the Washington politicians and
statesman came down to look over the proposed
annexation they threw a whale of a stag party with
girls. In the commotion they all signed what they
thought was a deer huntin’ lease and freed us. We’ve
never been captured since. Ain’t we lucky?
He worked his way through college and earned a degree.
But, a Petroleum Engineer was not what he wanted to be.
He loaded up his clothes and his old guitar.
He headed to the hill country in his old car.
He pulled into Luckenbach, so the story goes.
Next thing, he was opening up for Willie’s big shows.
He traveled with Willie all over this land.
Playing a right-handed guitar with his left hand.
He tried marriage a few times for a little while,
But, marriage did not fit in with his roaming life style.
Today, Jimmy Lee Jones is a well known name,
And, if he could do it over, he would do it the same.
Everybody is Somebody in Luckenbach.

Texas Trivia
When Hondo Crouch died in 1976 Texas Monthly called him "the Most Professional Texan." His death
made Time Magazine’s Milestones. Unbeknownst to him in his lifetime, he was considered a Texas Folk Hero,
a charismatic story teller of tall tales. Here’s one of my favorite tall tales of his: "We can’t grow no watermelons here in Big Flat. Soil’s too rich. Those vines grow so fast they just wear the watermelons out draggin’ ‘em
around!" Hondo’s listed in the Texas Trivia Game under "Legends." This being Texas Independence month,
see if you know some more nickel knowledge of our great one-of-a-kind interesting state.

You can’t
forget
Memories
but couldn’t so they went back to San Antonio.
By now the settlers had it up to here with
Mexican rules and regulations. They decided to have
a meeting to decide what to do.
In the meantime battles were breaking out all
over. On February 23, 1836 a bunch of settlers holed
up in the old Alamo in San Antonio and decided to
fight any and all the Mexican troops that came by.
There were about 180 of them. The Mexican army
led by Santa Anna showed up with at least twentyfour hundred soldiers. By March 6, the settlers at the
Alamo had been defeated.
Santa Anna took out after Sam Houston who was
leading the Army of Texas. The pursuit known as the
"Run away scrape" went from Washington on the
Brazos down to San Jacinto Bay where Santa Anna
had the misfortune of catching Sam Houston.
The Battle of San Jacinto featured about 900
Texans against about 1300 of Santa Anna’s finest
took place in the middle of the afternoon. The battle
was over in 18 minutes. The Texans won. That is
where the Republic of Texas began.
Texas was an independent Republic for ten years.
During this time the Mexicans kept trying to get back
their land. The Texians had their hands full fighting
Mexicans on one side of the yard and Indians on the
other side of the yard.
This situation brought about the Texas Rangers
(Not baseball). The Rangers who were all volunteers,
for the most part unpaid, became the toughest kids on
the block, any block. They didn’t take names, they
just kicked butts.
In 1846 Texas joined the United States. This was
about the time the United States
got involved with the Mexican
American war. In that war the
Texas Rangers served as the
commando units and got a lot of
good marks..
Texas was pretty big when it
joined the Union. It brought with
it: New Mexico, Arizona, parts
of Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado
and Wyoming. Nobody was sure just how big Texas
was as Lewis and Clark had not checked..
And that, boys and girls, is how Texas came to
be the most famous state in the Union..

March 2 is celebrated at Luckenbach as well as
all of Texas as Texas Independence Day. All the
movies about the Battle of the Alamo have sort of
clouded the real story.
Here is the real story from the Gospel according
to Raven.
Mexico was a part of New Spain after Spain took
it away from the Indians..Mexico revolted and broke
away from Spain and then there was Mexico..
Texas was a state in the country of Mexico. The
Mexican government encouraged Anglos to settle in
Texas thinking that the Anglos would solve the problem of the Indians who had been a thorn in Mexico’s
side from day one.
In 1822 the Austin family, Moses and Stephen F.
got a grant of land from Mexico to settle Texas. What
is known as the "Old Three Hundred" settlers were
located along the Brazos River where they took up
farming and fighting with the Indians.
About 1830 there were so many illegal Anglo
immigrants in Texas that Mexico started to try and
slow down the immigration by coming up with
things that made Anglos uncomfortable like taxes
every time you turned around.
There was talk of building a wall
along the Louisiana border. By
1834 there were over thirty-thousand Anglo settlers in Texas far
outnumbering the Seventy-eight
hundred settlers from Mexico.
Around 1835 the Mexican
government started violating the
settler’s second amendment
rights. A troop of soldiers was sent to Gonzales to
repossess a cannon Mexico had loaned the settlers to
use on the Indians..The settlers were set on keeping
the cannon. When the Mexican troops showed up in
Gonzales the settlers put up a sign that said, "Come
and take it" referring to the cannon. The troops tried
