Place Value and Rounding of Decimals Unit Plan

Technology Integration Workshop
2014
Unit Title: Place Value and Rounding of Decimals
Grade Level: 5
Subject Area: Math
Duration/Length/Number of class periods:
Description: Students will understand the concept of place value and decimals and how to round off decimals to the nearest tenth,
hundredth, thousandth and ten thousandth in mathematical and real-world situations.
Established Goals (State):
5.1.2.1 Read and write decimals using place value to describe decimals in terms of
groups from millionths to millions.
5.1.2.5 Round numbers to the nearest 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001.
What Enduring Understandings are desired?
Students will understand…
-Understanding of the place value and rounding of decimals allows for greater knowledge of real-world situations
-How to read and write a number and decimal using place value
What Essential Questions will be considered? (about 4-8)
-How is the decimal equivalent of a fraction calculated?
-What type of real-world settings or examples are decimals seen or used in?
-What type of real-world settings or examples is place value seen or used in?
-In what situation would you round a decimal and when would you not?
Students will know / be able to:
-The rule for correctly rounding a decimal
-Round a decimal to the nearest tenth, hundredth or thousandth
-Identify the place value of a given number inside a number or decimal
-Calculate the decimal equivalent of a fraction
-Read and write a number or decimal using the correct place value
-Apply the concept of place value and rounding of decimals in real-world situations
Formative
Description
Introduction/refresher to place value activity: Watch short introductory
video on place value and rounding decimals on brainpop.com (subscription
will be needed).
-Pass out chart and display it on the board. Students will come to the board
and hit an interactive die on the board to roll. Class will practice writing and
pronouncement of the numbers that end up on the board.
-Assign a worksheet requiring students to identify from Key to Workbook
on Decimals, p. 10 and 11
Using place value of decimals in real-life settings:
-Give examples of where knowledge of place value of decimals exist
(writing a check, measurement, percentages, etc.). Put this into a list and ask
kids if they can think of other examples where they see this concept being
used. Add these to the list as well.
-Have students work in groups to solve and teach several assigned problems
to the class
Rounding of decimals:
-Introduce the rules for rounding a decimal to the nearest 10th, 100th or
1,000th.
-Pass out and review Rules for rounding a decimal
-Play rounding of decimals game on IWB, laptops for some, depending on
size of the class and resources available
Rounding of decimals in real-life settings:
-Make a list of examples where you might see rounding in real-life
situations with the class
-Hand out worksheet on Using Decimals, p. 18 of AGS Publishing student
workbook
-Have students work in groups to solve and teach several assigned problems

Review: Create a study guide to take home and review game to study
for the test.
Assessment: Give a short test on the concept. There will be problems
with identifying place value of whole numbers and decimals, reading
and writing decimals, rounding decimals to the nearest
10th/100th/1000th, and word problems requiring application of these
concepts (writing a check, adding/subtracting decimals and rounding
decimals).
