ThewordshroveisaformoftheEnglishwordshrive,whichmeanstoobtainabsolutionforone'ssins
bywayofConfessionanddoingpenance.ThusShroveTuesdaygetsitsnamefromthecustomfor
Christianstobe"shriven"beforethestartofLent.ShroveTuesdayisthelastdayof"shrovetide",
somewhatanalogoustotheCarnivaltraditionthatdevelopedseparatelyincountriesofLatinEurope.
ShroveTuesday(knowninsomecountriesasPancakeTuesdayorPancakeday)isadayinFebruaryor
MarchprecedingAshWednesday(thefirstdayofLent),whichiscelebratedinsomecountriesby
consumingpancakes.Inothers,especiallythosewhereitiscalledMardiGrasorsometranslation
thereof,thisisacarnivalday,andalsothelastdayof"fateating"or"gorging"beforethefastingperiod
ofLent.
ThismoveablefeastisdeterminedbyEaster.Theexpression"Shrove
Tuesday"comesfromthewordshrive,meaning"absolve".Shrove
TuesdayisobservedbymanyChristians,includingweAnglicans,
Lutherans,MethodistsandRomanCatholics,who"makeaspecial
pointofself-examination,ofconsideringwhatwrongstheyneedto
repent,andwhatamendmentsoflifeorareasofspiritualgrowththey
especiallyneedtoaskGod'shelpindealingwith."
BeingthelastdayoftheliturgicalseasonhistoricallyknownasShrovetide,beforethepenitential
seasonofLent,relatedpopularpractices,suchasindulginginfoodthatonesacrificesfortheupcoming
fortydays,areassociatedwithShroveTuesdaycelebrations,beforecommencingthefastingand
religiousobligationsassociatedwithLent.ThetermMardiGrasisFrenchfor"FatTuesday",referringto
thepracticeofthelastnightofeatingricher,fattyfoodsbeforetheritualfastingoftheLentenseason,

reached19,900items!Thehighschoolvolunteersweresoexcitedthatweonlyneeded100moreto
hitthebig20,000.WemadeanannouncementduringserviceaboutitandonThursday,whenthekids
didthecountduringAgape,theycamedowntothekitchentellingmetherewere93itemsinthe
bin...only7short!IsaidIhad4thingsinmycarthatI'dforgottentobringinandthatwecouldeasily
find3moreinourAgapesuppliesbuttheysaid"Noway,thatwouldbecheating.We'llwaittillnext
week."Bythetimeyoureadthis,wewillhavesurpassed

Howtomakeitsoundsincere?HowtohaveitshowwhoIam?Willitbegoodenoughfortheschool tochoosemeoutofsomanyapplicants?ThestoryIhaveforyouisactuallynotaboutoneofmykids,
it'saboutoneofthevolunteersatAgape.Hecametomelastmonthsaying"Cindy,Ihavetotellyou
something.Igotintomy1stchoicecollegewitha$26,000ayearscholarship.I'dlikeyoutoreadthe
essayIwroteformyapplication."Iwassohappyandexcitedforhim!Andthenhehandsmehisessay
anditwasabouthowvolunteeringatAgapeoverthepastfewyears,haschangedhimand"brought
outamuchmorematureperson,appreciativeofcommunaltogethernessandloveamongst
individuals."
Hecalledit"ajourneyofassistingothers,ratherthanlivingaselfishlifeofhelpingoutonlywhenthere
wasabenefittome."Iamsothrilledforthisyoungmanbothbecausehegotintothecollegehe
wantedandbecausehehaslearnedthatingiving,youusuallygetmorethanyougive.Weareso
blessedtobeabletoprovideaplaceforteenagerstomatureinahealthyway.Theschoolalsotold
himthat$6000ayearofthatscholarshipwasfromafundthatisonlyawardedtopeoplewho'vedone
communityservice.Sothat's$24,000salaryheearnedforvolunteeringatAgape!Iguessingthe
othersarenowgoingtoaskforaraise!
