Overview
Albertans have a big, beautiful backyard to play in. There’s a provincial park or recreation area
within an hour’s drive of every Alberta community, and nearly 500 parks within the provincial
parks system. But in 2008, Alberta’s quickly growing population was putting a strain on the
provincial parks system – reserving campsites by phone or in person simply wasn’t working
anymore. Meeting the challenge with modernization, Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation
(TPR) created an online campground reservation system. Within four years of their digital
portal going online, TPR has seen significant increases in campground use and nearly 337,000
reservations through the site.
Breakdown of a breakthrough
After registering on the site, campers have full access to past, present and future reservations.
Important information such as fire and liquor bans is impossible to miss. Campers can search
for a campsite in any campground, customizing their searches based on attributes such as
waterfront, boat launch, disabled sites, hook-ups and so on. Each campsite, as well as the
features in and around the campground, can be viewed individually via both high definition
and 360° panoramic photos. If permits are needed, campers can manage those through the
site as well. Having found the perfect campsite, they can confirm its availability and reserve
and pay with a credit card.
Reserve.AlbertaParks.ca also includes a wealth of functionality for Contact Centre Operators
and Campground Operators that help accelerate administration. Park management is
significantly more efficient thanks to enhanced business intelligence that supports essential
reconciliation and reporting of finances, improved transparency and accountability for
revenue, and new capabilities such as credit card transaction tracking and real-time updates of
reservation availability.

The result – revenue to reinvest
TPR has recognized an opportunity for other jurisdictions to share in the ongoing
development of the vision and expansion of the leading online reservation system on
the planet – a solution that captures the imagination of visitors and drives the digital
tourism economy while retaining important revenues to reinvest.
A turn-key solution that you can leverage today
TPR has recently executed a long term Development & Distribution Agreement with
Team Sierra as developers and supporters of the solution to represent Alberta in making
the technology available to other jurisdictions and interested parties.
Team Sierra is excited to work with other levels of government to help
them realize the benefits of online tourism and campground reservation
services. Moving onto Reserve.AlbertaParks.ca will create new visibility
and exposure for your parks.
This solution has numerous potential applications and is available to other jurisdictions
on a hosted or in-sourced basis. If you’re interested, contact Sierra. Several approaches
to bringing campgrounds and campsites to life in the solution are available, including
a “GIS-lite” edition for jurisdictions not wanting to invest heavily in data collection.
All models include support and enhancement services through Team Sierra via Sierra
Systems Inc.
The online reservation system is available via several licensing vehicles, including:
▪▪
▪▪
Conventional software license
A percentage of gross revenue through the solution software as a service model
with or without hosting and contact centre services
