History of the Computer Part IV

History of the Computer Pt 3
1890-1946
1) Electro Mechanical Machines – (Electric Tabulating System) used electricity instead of steam. This
enabled it to make faster operations.
2) Herman Hollerith – Electric Tabulating system for the 1890 census. Founder of IBM (International
Business Machines)
3) Vannevar Bush – 1930 – Differential Analyzer
4) Howard Aiken – 1037 – Mark 1 (51 feet long and 8 feet high)
History of the Computer Part IV
1946-Present
1. 1946-Circuits – Tiny electric pathways begin to perform the counting had been done
by gears.
2. 1946- John Mauchly and John Eckert invent the ENIAC It uses vacuum tubes.
3. 1946- John Von Neuman invents the EDSAC. The first computer to use Binary code.
4. 1951- John Mauchly and John Eckert invent the UNIVAC. It uses both vacuum tubes and magnetic tape
for storage.
5. 1959- Transistors replace Vacuum tubes. IBM introduces the 1401 computer.
6. 1965-1972- Integrated Circuits are invented. This discovery makes it possible to build smaller computers
(minicomputers). Which in turn makes space travel possible.
7. 1972-1980- Large Scale Integration (LSI) of components allows for the creation of the
Processor, which allows companies to build microcomputers.
Micro
8. 1976- Steven Jobs and Stephen Wozniak design and build the Apple Computer in the Job’s family
garage. The use of a Graphic User Interface (GUI) as their operating system helps with the popularity of
the computer with home users.
9. 1980- Microsoft hires Bill Gates to develop MS-DOS Operating System for their new computer.
10. 1983- Microsoft announces the Windows operating system; it is a poor imitation of Apple’s graphic
user interface.
11. 1991- Windows 3.1 is introduced by Microsoft.
12. 1993- Intel announces the first Pentium chip.
13. 1994- Microsoft releases Windows 95.
14. 1998- Apple releases the IMAC computer.
15. 2000- Intel and AMD begin a processor war; Pentium 2’s and 3’s are introduced.
16.2001- Intel and AMD introduce Pentium 4’s with processor speeds over 1.0 Ghz.
17.2002- Intel and AMD processors reach speeds over 2.0 Ghz.
18.1956- The Internet was created by the Military as an emergency plan in case of a nuclear war with
Russia. Originally called ARPANET it was comprised of 4 computers in different states that could launch
missiles back at Russia if no humans survived to return fire.
19. 2017- Advances in CPU have allowed for computers to be reduced in size to a cell phone (Smart
Phone)
