As a school body, we can corporately share the blessings God has bestowed upon us and thereby have an impact on our community. For that to sustain itself, though, we must remember that institutional values are only as strong as the values of the individuals constituting the institution. Sharing is done, ultimately, by individuals to individuals. Unfortunately, sharing doesn’t always come naturally (and I use the term “natural” in the biblical sense). The effects of the Fall are evident in the youngest of children in this arena, with the declaration of “Mine!” being an often-heard shout. As adults, we may have stopped the shouting and grabbing, but greediness and covetousness still can characterize our actions and attitudes. Those natural, fallen tendencies grow in the fertile soil of our culture, a culture that preaches to get what you can while you can. How do we combat this to keep A Blessing to be Shared from becoming an empty slogan? Obviously, as an educational institution, we teach it. We lay the theological foundation for a proper view of our time, talents, and resources. We deny the world’s claim that sharing is a zero-sum game where your gain is my loss. In God’s economy, my sharing God’s blessings with you is a win-win situation. Even in those times where sharing demands sacrifice and pain, God has taught it and He expects it. The next thing we can do is model it. God didn’t just teach sharing, He shared His Son with us for our salvation. We have the perfect example. As a school, we need to model and encourage sharing through our policies, procedures, initiatives, and budget. We also need to build in opportunities for our students to live this out. Too often I see that institutions expect on the one hand and then set up internal roadblocks to keep those very things from happening. We need to be priming the pump of joyful giving, not plugging up the pipe! Our modeled curriculum has to match up with our taught curriculum. Kids are very perceptive – they notice those inconsistencies. At Decatur Heritage, we “require” the lab portion of our students’ sharing education in several places. For example, our Key Club, Builder’s Club, Beta Club, Junior Class, and Senior Class groups have required group and individual service projects. While the idea of mandatory volunteerism seems like an oxymoron, when viewed in the same light as a lab component of a science class, it starts to make sense. Many things can only be learned fully when experienced. That last piece of the puzzle is more often caught than taught. By having the students roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty, empathy can be planted and joyful service can blossom. When they’ve caught it this way, it tends to stick. Sharing can and should be preached from the pulpit (or, in our case, the ivory tower). We must never forget, though, that actual sharing begins and is sustained at the grass-roots level of the individual. What a difference our children can make when compelled by a deeply-held conviction that all of life is A Blessing to be Shared! A Blessing to Be shAred IMPACT: What does it mean? According to the American Heritage Dictionary, IMPACT is defined as, " To have an effect on." Effects of this action word can be witnessed and sensed as you walk through the doors, down the halls and in the classrooms of DHCA. Decatur Heritage is IMPACTING lives each day! Colossians 3:23-24 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.” Will you commit your support and prayers to this endeavor as the school community claims this verse to “have an IMPACT on” their spheres of influence? Here are a few examples of DHCA IMPACT: “ALL-PRO” Dad Initiative – a monthly breakfast and short program sponsored by Mr. Barry Keith, Owner-Operator and Mr. Leonard Morris, Marketing Director of ChickFil-A Decatur. Senior Grace Harris enjoys a chicken biscuit with her dad, Joey. DHCA Forensics Team – Fifteen high school students comprise our team. Students who participate learn to dissect Community-wide support to complicated topics, follow current events, design and construct an and exercise and improve speaking skills. Outdoor Learning Classroom The team includes Angelica Gales, Erica included GE volunteers Light, Sponsor Kelly Cimino, Alisha pictured above Karen Amerson, Laura Ann Prickett, Curtis Dunaway, Joy Newton and Hammons, Trevor Kurzhal, Daniel South, Jan Masterson. and Trey McLemore. “BEST” Robotics Team – Being their first year to compete, DHCA has made an IMPACT and captured 3rd place in CAD Notebook and TOP FOUR in the engineering notebook. Above Stanley Howard assists Matthew Sasser, Marshall Cheshier, Clay Crump, and Andrew Sasser while Curtis Hammons designs hardware on the computer. 2009-2010 ACT SCORES Decatur Heritage State of Alabama! ! 22.9 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! 20.3 The ACT (American College Testing) is used to determine college readiness. We, as a school, have been so richly blessed, and it is with great pleasure that we are able to use our blessings to serve Blythe Bowman others. Our parents, grandparents and special friends have faithfully served Decatur Heritage for Board Secretary the past 15 years and continue to do so today with great passion and enthusiasm. I am constantly amazed and humbled by the outpouring support that continues to fill countless volunteer roles at Decatur Heritage. From driving on field trips, working the Book Fair, or sweeping the gym floor, YOU have demonstrated “Serve wholeheartedly” to our students and school community. Our parents, grandparents, and special friends continue to serve our school with financial gifts through the Annual Fund, capital campaign, parent association fundraisers, booster club, as well as with individual gifts. The impact of these gifts are visible in our Fine Arts program, Outdoor Classroom, technology, additional faculty, and sports equipment. This year our Annual Fund will be led by parent volunteers, Cathy and Jeff Parker, pictured below. The purpose of the Annual Fund is to help offset budget expenses and keep our tuition as low as possible. You have continued to faithfully “Share your blessings” with Decatur Heritage, impacting the community with “Excellence in Christian Education.” By serving the school through prayer, our parents, grandparents, and special friends demonstrate a servant’s heart in the most powerful way. Humbly asking for the Lord to protect our school, bless our school, and for the school to glorify Him in everything should continue to be our focus. May our school be marked by prayerfulness in all that we do. Your prayers are coveted by the faculty, staff, administration, and board. While math formulas and science methods may fade from memory, your example of a servant’s heart through your volunteer efforts, financial gifts, and prayers will continue to impact our students for a lifetime. “Every experience God gives us, every person He puts in our lives is the perfect preparation for the future that only He can see.” Thank you for helping prepare our students for the future the Lord has for them. The Funding Paradigm Introducing Cathy and Jeff Parker 2010-2011 Annual Fund Campaign Chairs Each year at this time we begin our Annual Fund campaign. On the heels of our first (and incredibly successful) capital campaign, we want to continue to build on that success. While the $7 million raised was certainly successful, what could also be deemed a success was the large increase in the number of people participating in making voluntary, charitable (and, I might add, tax-deductible) donations for the benefit of the students and mission of Decatur Heritage Christian Academy. Continuing with that emphasis, during our Annual Fund campaign this year we will be stressing how important your participation is, regardless of the amount. Shortly, you will receive a letter from Jeff and Cathy Parker, our campaign chairs. They’ll be reminding you of the wonderful ways that your annual giving supports the school. They’ll also be asking you to join together with them, our board, our faculty and staff, our parents, our alumni, our grandparents, and community members to make a donation this year. As a school occupying a unique niche in the educational environment of Decatur, we have to balance a broad range of needs and expectations on a daily basis! Through God’s grace and to His glory, this incredibly diverse group we have here at Decatur Heritage has come together in unity to build a school that has made a marked impact on kids and our community for fifteen years now. God reminds us in Psalm 133:1 “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!” That unity can provide a wonderful witness to the world and can empower our school for great things. Won’t you join with us in unity to support this worthy endeavor? Decatur Heritage Christian Academy is a 501-C-3 non-profit organization. Well, I didn't think so; but I was wrong. One of the values I learned from DHCA was to reach for your dreams with excellence, all for the glory of God. I have watched this happen in my life. But what does that have to do with Chile? Don't worry; the answer is coming soon. My name is Maria Caceres (formally Doerter), a proud DHCA graduate from the class of 2000. I attended Northwest University in Kirkland, WA and became a registered nurse in 2004. I continued to live in Washington from 2004 to 2007 working at a trauma hospital as a burns and pediatric nurse. Life was good, but something was missing. It was time for a change. Thus, in 2007 I decided to pack my bags and attend a missionary school called Youth with a Mission (YWAM) in Pichilemu, Chile. The school lasted for six months, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to step outside "the box" for a season. YWAM was divided into 3 months of classroom instruction and 3 months of outreach or missionary work. Our teams spent three months in Bolivia, Peru, and northern Chile sharing the Gospel through dramas, children's ministry, teaching, and street ministry. During this time, I met my husband Rafael Caceres, and we were married in June of 2008. We worked together on the YWAM staff until December 2009. After a visit to Alabama to see family and friends, we returned to Chile in February to help my father-in-law open a drug rehab facility for women with children. The center, Centro Terapeutico CUMI (CTC Cumi), officially opened in September 2009. Rafael worked as a spiritual "monitor" or therapist, and I worked as the medical director. From October to December, we saw ten women and three children come to CTC and fight their struggle with drugs and alcohol. Each one heard the Gospel and several of them accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. We know that seeds were planted in the hearts of others. Sadly, in January 2010, the center had to suddenly close due to financial difficulties. Although this was very hard to understand, we know that the Lord had a purpose and that lives were influenced for His glory. The closure of the center marked a new season for Rafael and I. We began think about moving back to the United States. During this time, I had the opportunity to teach English to 4- and 5-year olds. It was an absolute BLAST, and I learned so much about children, teaching, and the Chilean culture. Rafael received his permanent visa and within a few weeks, we were back in Seattle, WA. Thus, all of this to say, a six-month mission trip changed my life. Giving the Lord your life allows for one to experience life to the fullest. When we trust in Him, He will not only give us the desires of our hearts, but will teach us more than we could ever imagine. May the Lord bless you! 4 “oUr Mission is to assist families by providing their children with an education OUTDOOR CLASSROOM Aubrey Little and Hope Hendriks help Mrs. Sandy Stephenson plant a butterfly bush. Special thanks are extended to the students and faculty sponsors at Austinville and Nungester Elementary Schools. The Learning Stations include: • • Mrs. Adams shows kindergarten students how a raised bed is constructed. • • • More than 300 people participated in constructing the Outdoor Classroom. A Water Garden with fish and aquatic plants A Butterfly Garden which has now attracted several species of butterflies A Song Bird Garden Six Raised Bed Gardens that were prepared by older students and contain mums, vegetables and herbs planted by the K5-4th grade classes. A Bog Garden where aquatic plants will be planted next Spring. These Learning Stations will be used to teach not only science, but also math, history, art and English for all students K-12. The Alabama Wildlife Federation will provide ongoing support through workshops and lesson plans for teachers. Students will participate in both seasonal plantings and maintenance of the area. Improvements including signage and identification markers for plants and flowers, additional plants and flowers and other Learning Stations are planned as time and funds permit. Sponsors for the Outdoor Classroom project include GE who provided GE volunteers and a grant for the Water Garden, Alabama Farmers Cooperative, C & L Wood Products, Bennett’s Nursery, Smarty Plants, Sugar Magnolia, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Sun Drop Bottling Company. Second grade students learn how to plant vegetables between the strings, allowing for uniform growing. Dr. Bob McDaniel and Gilbert Holley have donated many hours to design and construct the pavilion. Seniors Daniel Barriault and Trey McLemore hold piping steady while the pump for the pond is installed. The Outdoor Pavilion is also part of the Outdoor Classroom and will be used to conduct classes as well as an area for teachers and students to use for unlimited types of activities. Others who have donated their time include Dr. Robert McDaniel, Lawson Craig, Henry Bowman, Jeremy Nabors, Daniel South and Dr. Laron Hardy. We are so thankful for each of these volunteers, and especially to Mr. Holley who has given every Saturday for over two months to complete the pavilion. Many thanks to all who participated financially and who volunteered in this project. A special thanks to the students who worked so hard and so joyfully to create this wonderful outdoor learning environment for students to use for many years to come. Students will be collecting mittens, gloves, & gently-used coats for the Neighborhood Christian Center. This school year begins our 10th year as a part of the Decatur Heritage family. It is just incredible how time flies. As we were preparing back in 2000 to send our then five-year-old daughter, Mackenzie, off to the world Michele, Daris, Mackenzie of school, we were looking for a safe, and Nicholas Borden loving half-day program to ease into the transition of a five day per week schedule. Several friends recommended we check into Decatur Heritage. One of those families had a student attending the school, the other family, who happened to be homeschooling their child, had wonderful things to say about the kindergarten teachers. We spent a great amount of time in prayer and then scheduled our tour. We loved the fact that DHCA had a half-day program, but we were thrilled at the prospect of our little girl being in a Christian environment. After our tour, we knew this was the place God had directed us to send our child. Our plan was to send our children to the DHCA half-day kindergarten program and then in first grade move on to the Decatur City Schools Magnet Program. With that being said, obviously God had another plan for us. I have always said that our school’s greatest assets are our teachers. When you have teachers infused with the creativity to teach and also share God’s love in a way that only He can instill, what a powerful difference it makes. Back in 2000, the Kindergarten teachers were Mrs. Coffey, Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Swindell. Both Mrs. Coffey and Mrs. Adams have moved on to other areas within the school and Mrs. Swindell has retired, but let me say “Wow, what an introduction to DHCA”. Once your child is exposed to the high caliber of teachers that DHCA has to offer, you forgot the fact that your child was attending school in a modified TVA trailer. Words are just not adequate enough to describe the wonderful experience we had that first year. I say “we” because not only did our daughter attend school each day at DHCA, but the families were given the opportunity and encouraged to participate in their child’s learning experience. As that first year passed by, it was becoming more evident to us that God wanted our family to remain at Decatur Heritage. Seeing the “Fruits of the Spirit” displayed artistically on the walls of the main hall was just another reminder of the benefits that would far out-weigh the sacrifice we knew it would be to commit financially, especially when we had a son that would be ready for kindergarten in three years. This was a sacrificial investment worth making. Ten years later with Mackenzie in 9th grade and our son Nicholas in the 6th grade, we are very thankful and blessed to be a part of the DHCA family. We have had the privilege for our children to learn under some of the most creative, loving, Godly teachers around. We have also established friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime. We have been lifted up in prayer by the DHCA family when we dealt with unexpected health issues last fall and winter as well as being the recipient of the wonderful Heritage Cares program. We are so blessed to have our children in a loving, caring environment that strives for academic excellence, but most of all we are thankful for our school because it is Christ centered. To God be the glory for all that has been accomplished at DHCA in His name and for all that He has planned for the future. Presenting 2010 Excellence In Construction Winners............... The first-ever varsity football team at DHCA has had a very successful season. The record does not fully reflect it, but the coaching staff chooses to look at how far the team has come in just two years. XC Good luck at the XC Sectionals! 8 Beginning with a JV schedule last year, then moving to a varsity schedule this year, our season has been a huge accomplishment for our program. Coach Dupper and his staff are encouraged by the commitment and hard work with the goal to “finish well.” Decatur Heritage Christian Academy is a member of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. neWs FroM “the eAgle’s nest” VOLLEYBALL DHCA hosted the Morgan County Junior High Volleyball Tournament in September.
