Introduction
Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power
to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
Viktor Frankl
Notes
The intention of this portrait is to raise your self‐awareness and help you
understand your behaviors. You can use this knowledge to become more
effective at making things happen and to improve your communication with
others.
At the heart of this approach is a questionnaire which measures different
aspects of your behavior. This portrait, based on years of psychological
research, will give you some indicators about how you behave, acknowledge
your strengths (and how you sometimes overplay them) and identify
behaviors that you rarely display. It will also make distinctions between your
behavior and your motivations.
Getting into the right frame of mind
First a really important ground rule: this is completely confidential
information. It is solely to help you develop, although we do suggest you
consider sharing it with those you trust.
Be open to the feedback in this portrait ‐ it is intended to help you make
positive changes.
Focus on the observations in this portrait that you think can really help you
develop. View this as an opportunity to work on improving yourself.
When reading your portrait it is important to remember that no one quality
is more important than another. Each aspect of who you are can prove to be
a crucial strength depending on what situation you find yourself in at any
given time. This portrait is not a judgment of who you are; it is simply an
aid to guide you towards a better sense of self‐awareness to allow you to
recognize your strengths and possible areas for development in the near
future.

Your Inner Spark
You are brilliant at generating new and creative ideas. At your best you are a visionary, seen by
your colleagues as an "idea machine". You love thinking about the big picture, sharing your ideas
with others and the discussion that ensues. For you the big idea comes first; you believe without
long‐term and creative thinking we are bound to get lost in the details and progress only
towards limited goals.
Others come to you when they want to be stimulated or benefit from your creative thinking
skills. You are very excitable when it comes to conversations about ideas that intrigue you.
When people talk to you, some of your enthusiasm may rub off on them!

Your Inner Spark
When plans fail, you find yourself rapidly thinking of new and better ways to achieve the
objective. Whatever the problem, you can always see possibilities and a way forward. This
makes you invaluable as a catalyst and source of good ideas within a team. You may agree with
Einstein when he said, "If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts."
You love big picture thinking and will always want to take a holistic view. Colleagues who cannot
see your vision frustrate you. You should be aware that they in turn, might be thinking "Why do
you always have your head in the clouds?" Conveying all your ideas to those less imaginative than
you may be an ongoing challenge ‐ they just do not have the same capacity for this as yourself.
You are a thoroughly practical person, Lumina . You enjoy nothing more than getting to grips
with how things work, and you are known as very realistic and grounded. People come to you
for down to earth advice, knowing you have little patience for vague "management speak".
You often find you are quickly able to pick out the weak points in a proposed solution to a
problem, especially when considering its practical application. You have a knack for working out
where things could go wrong. When you are done vetting a plan it will be all the more tough and
robust for your intervention.
One of your challenges may be finding the right way to communicate your insights ‐ because of
this you often find it easier to get down to working on a task rather than discussing it with
others.
Despite your preference for the concrete and tangible, you are also able to engage with others
on a conceptual level. You recognize the importance of the big picture, and readily see the
merit in long term and far‐reaching ideas. That is, so long as those ideas have a chance of
working in reality. When you bring both the big picture and the hard data to bear on a single
project, you possess a rare capability of both understanding and finding effective ways to
implement some of the most complex plans.

Your Inner Spark
Communication
In a discussion you will delegate and designate tasks to individuals. You enjoy everyone having
clear roles in order to avoid ambiguity. This also makes it easier for you to know who to
communicate with.
You enjoy discussing abstract ideas, but you also have the ability to bring in the practical side of
things into the conversation as well.
Unstructured discussions without boundaries are perfect for your flexible communication style.
Leadership & Working With Others
Lumina , you are often seen as a rational and analytical leader. Those who work with you know
that you place a lot of value in well thought‐through processes that demonstrate sound
reasoning. The methods and plans you lay out are usually based on an objective perspective and
it is easy for others to connect with your logical thought patterns. Another key thing that others
appreciate is that they know that you will be consistent and impartial in your decision making.

How you use the four archetypes
Notes
Your four archetypes:

47%
Conscientious Archetype
24%
Inspiring Archetype
20%
Empowering Archetype
18%
Your preferred color is Commanding Red You like using your logic to analyze
problems in a rational manner. You prefer to deal with issues in a very
direct, head on manner. You also use a significant amount of your
Conscientious Archetype. You tend to stay grounded and realistic, but
recognize the value in studying the trends and patterns hidden within facts
and figures. You can manage your time efficiently to ensure you meet your
deadlines. Your third color archetype is Inspiring Yellow. You see that every
cloud has a silver lining. Problems contain new possibilities and ideas to be
explored. You are good at working around bureaucratic obstacles to
progress. Your potential for using Empowering Green energy is very rarely
actualized. An example of your lower preference for green energy is that
you don't enjoy working in an unstructured way. This is especially the case if
you haven't got clear time scales to follow.

(1) The word 'mandala' means 'circle' in Sanskrit. In many different cultures over the
centuries, often through paintings, the symbolism of a circle has been used to help people
consider "who am I?" ‐ in fact, the famous Swiss psychologist Carl Jung said "I knew that in
finding the mandala as an expression of the self I had attained what was for me the ultimate".

Your strengths and possible weaknesses
Lumina , your natural strengths are:
You know that every problem is a new possibility in waiting. The potential for new ideas
is limitless and temporary problems are just one more way of guiding your thinking in
new directions.
You are a very pragmatic person and you like to focus on the key practical elements of
any project. This allows you to focus your efforts where they will be most effective when
it comes to planning and implementation.
You try to keep an open mind and discuss alternative courses of action when unexpected
events derail your plans. You might not always find a solution to your problems, but the
fact that you stay open‐minded allows you to seize the opportunity when it does arise.
Here are some of your possible weaknesses:
You can be very decisive when the situation calls for it. However once the decision is
made you do not always display the self‐discipline required to successfully follow through
and complete your objectives.
Your analytical nature can lead you to be very skeptical of concepts. Constantly looking
for the flaws in an argument can be counter‐productive when you are working on new
ideas as it can completely halt the development process.
Some suggested methods of development:
If your original plans leave you unable to deal with the pressures of unexpected problems,
you need to find alternative ways of achieving your goals. If your objectives are
unrealistic, accept the fact and move on to more achievable ones.
Even if you are certain that you are right and that your opponent is wrong, there is no
harm in taking a step back and leaving the debate for another day. The ability to
accommodate another person's point of view is important if you wish to work together
effectively.

Two quotes to inspire you
Notes
The quantity of civilization is measured by the quality of imagination. ‐
Victor Hugo, Les Miserables
Victor Hugo's sweeping statement demonstrates the importance he placed on
imagination. Imagination, creativity, the expression of free‐thought; these
were the true measures of a civilization and everything else was mere
trappings and ornamentation. What was true then is no less true now. Don't
deny your free‐thinking spirit; embrace it for it has value beyond compare.
Without it no civilization would flourish and no business would prosper.
A love of tradition has never weakened a nation, indeed it has strengthened
nations in their hour of peril; but the new view must come, the world must
roll forward. ‐ Sir Winston Churchill, speech in the House of Commons,
November 29, 1944
As Sir Winston Churchill said, there is nothing wrong with tradition but you
ought to be mindful of his words concerning new views. Be open to the
possibility of change and embrace your imaginative side. The world cannot
move forward without originality and innovation. Allow yourself the freedom
to think creatively and explore your thoughts, you might be surprised at
what you come up with.

14
You primarily use your Red Archetype
Your key Red Strengths are:
You like using your analytical skills to prove your point
You aren't afraid to say what needs to be said
You have confidence in your own abilities
Sometimes you may use too much Red:
Your empathy can get submerged under the weight of your logic
Your desire for influence can become manipulative if left unchecked. This is an example
of using too much red energy.
Sometimes you may underuse your Red:
You can be too forgiving of people who don't try hard enough
You don't always follow through on the targets you set yourself
More on your Red Archetype:
You enjoy applying your logical mind to work issues, often starting with the desired outcome
and working backwards to see how to get there. You strive to be objective in your approach to
problem solving and will see the feelings of other people as of secondary importance, compared
to the need to achieve your goals.
Lumina , you enjoy engaging in a well articulated, thought‐through argument and see this as a
way of extending your understanding of the issues. This can mean others are less likely to see
your altruistic side. Instead they may see you as rather shrewd, even precocious. You are known
for your objective and dispassionate approach, which helps you when you need to work your way
through a logical process or line of argument. You like to test for flaws and find weaknesses.

15
Your Second Archetype is Blue
Your key Blue Strengths are:
You can generate in‐depth arguments, but know how
to boil them down to their most essential and
accessible form
When you make commitments you work hard to
deliver on them in a timely fashion
Sometimes you may use too much Blue:
You can be too rigid in your adherence to rules and procedures
Others may accuse you of spending more time planning work than actually doing it
Sometimes you may underuse your Blue:
You prefer to work with others even if the task doesn't require it
Others may judge you as haphazard in your working methods
More on your Blue Archetype:
You like to see yourself as a reliable person and do not give your commitment lightly. However,
when you do commit, you expect to be taken seriously. This is because you understand that,
when you make a commitment, you will be expected and relied upon to keep your word. It is
important to you to maintain your reputation as someone who is reliable.
When a request is made on your time, you will normally consider what you are committing to
and make a conscious choice to accept it or enter into further dialogue. When you reach the
point where you feel able to give your commitment, you will do all you can to meet it.
You like to take time management seriously and may have evolved your own process for
managing this. Good time management is fundamental to ensuring you are in a position to
deliver. You try to think carefully about the likely impact on your schedule before taking any
action.

16
Your Third Archetype is Yellow
Your key Yellow Strengths are:
You enjoy thinking outside the box
It takes a lot to fluster you
You can generate in‐depth arguments but know how
to boil them down to their most essential and
accessible form
Sometimes you may use too much Yellow:
You find it difficult to work within the bureaucratic process
You might notice that you use too much yellow energy when you allow your social life to
interfere with your timetable.
Sometimes you may underuse your Yellow:
Your strict adherence to time management can limit your flexibility
You are threatened by ideas that disrupt your routine
More on your Yellow Archetype:
You know there are times when your gut instincts are telling you something, and in hindsight
you recognize a lot of value in these subconscious feelings. There is nothing wrong with trusting
your instincts to guide you through a tricky situation; it is just another way of having
confidence in yourself.
When it comes to making tough decisions, and you don't have anything else to go on, you should
go with the choice you feel is right. There is a lot of merit in nurturing your ability to work
decisively and commit fully to your decisions. You can meet tough deadlines by prioritizing your
time and using the pressure as added motivation, instead of something to worry about.
You might also want to engage this side of yourself when it comes to the planning stage of a
project. There is a lot of value in following your intuition to help you create a meaningful vision.
Be willing to engage your spontaneous side in support of an inspirational vision, even if this
takes you in a different direction in terms of the original plan!

17
The Archetype you use least is Green
Your key Green Strengths are:
You take time to listen to your team without letting
it impinge on your ability to direct them
Sometimes you may use too much Green:
When you filled in the questionnaire, you did not report any overuse of green
Sometimes you may underuse your Green:
You do not always enjoy cooperating with others
In teamwork, you are not always as considerate of others as you could be
More on your Green Archetype:
While you prefer to listen and understand, when the time comes you are ready to step up and
provide leadership and direction for a group. You find that you rise to this position when a
group clearly lacks direction. It is as if you have two modes that both come naturally to you
depending on context: you can be both counselor and commander.

18
Recommendations to increase your 4 archetypes
Commanding Red
When you set yourself a goal, push yourself hard to achieve it
Deal with non‐performing team members
Conscientious Blue
Notice when you are doing too much 'thinking out loud' and disturbing the focus of those
around you
Spending more time on planning activities up front will save you time in the long run
Inspiring Yellow
Avoid getting too attached to the official process, follow your instincts every once in a
while
Try a fresh approach when looking for solutions
Empowering Green
Be more acknowledging of the contributions and strengths of others
Remember JFKs words ‐ "Ask not what your country can do for you ‐ ask what you can do
for your country" and every morning ask yourself "who can I help today?"

19
Recommendations to temper your 4 colors
Commanding Red
Try to temper your need for order by being sensitive to the needs of others
Focus on the goal as well as how to get there
Conscientious Blue
Make sure you maintain a balance between planning and doing. Do not use planning as a
way of procrastinating
Accept that last minute events can disrupt even the best laid plans ‐ let others know you
are willing to be flexible when this happens
Inspiring Yellow
Sometimes taking time over an action can save a lot of time in the long run
You may be surprised how a little time management can improve your decisions
Empowering Green
Based on how you filled in the questionnaire, there does not seem to be a need to temper or
use less of your green archetype.

Three perspectives on who you are
Notes
Your Three Personas
In the following sections we will delve further into your persona. Up until this
point we have been displaying information drawn from all three of your
personas to give you an overall picture of who you are. Now we will explore
you in more detail. Most people recognize their Underlying Persona and their
Everyday Persona. This is because you can recognize your motivations and
day to day behavior quite easily.
However there is a third persona, your Overextended Persona. This Persona
reveals itself when you are in high pressure circumstances and can be seen in
the way you interact with other people when the demands of the situation
increase.
We hope to give you a deeper understanding of your personas and to do that
we will separate them into three distinct items and give you some in‐depth
feedback on what trends have been revealed and if there are any areas you
can look to strengthen.
Your Underlying Persona
This is you at your most natural
This persona motivates you
You do not let everyone see this level of your persona
Your Everyday Persona
This is how you tend to behave
This persona is an indication of how other people might see you
You may be consciously putting on this persona to suit your work
environment
Your Overextended Persona
This is who you are when put under stress
Or how you react to unexpected events
This persona can come into effect unconsciously

Your three persona positions
Your three Personas on the Lumina Mandala
Lumina , your underlying persona tends to be Introverted and is infused with Green energy. You
enjoy engaging in one to one conversations and supporting others. However you can also take a
more direct leadership role if you see the need for it. Your everyday persona most obviously
uses Discipline Driven Blue energy. You are able to maintain a consistent level of work and you
have a strong work ethic.
Your Underlying Persona
Your Everyday Persona
Your Overextended Persona
Lumina , when you find yourself in a stressful situation you can see that your overextended
persona contains a lot of Inspiration Driven Green energy. As you do not always put a lot of
emphasis on planning things out clearly, you can fall foul of unexpected distractions which take
you off‐schedule without being noticed.

24
Your Three Personas
Notes
Your Underlying Persona
Lumina , you have a preference for using Introverted Green blended with
Outcome Focused and Down to Earth energy
Your natural preference is to look to the future and come up with new and
creative ways of moving forwards and finding new goals. You enjoy being given
free rein to come up with things and indulge your imagination. You can become
very invested in your ideas. When you are secure in your convictions you prefer
to argue your case strongly, but you still take the perspectives of others into
account even if you believe they are wrong.
Your Everyday Persona
Lumina , you most often use Discipline Driven Blue blended with
Extraverted and Down to Earth energy
You don't enjoy it when people engage you in discussions based on theories or
concepts. Nevertheless you have worked hard to become proficient in these
discussions and developed your ability to think in an abstract fashion. You are
not by nature a particularly open person. However, you notice that some
people feel more comfortable working with you when you access your emotions
and express them positively. Even when you don't feel truly enthusiastic, you
can act your way into it to motivate those around you.
Your Overextended Persona
Lumina , when your overextended persona emerges you may notice that
you use more Discipline Driven Green blended with Inspiration Driven and
People Focused energy
Usually you avoid working close to deadlines. However sometimes you cannot
avoid it and you can get so caught up in the thrill of beating the clock that you
don't take time to manage your quality control. Most of the time you have a laid
back and stress‐free approach. However when you are under a very tight
deadline and people are demanding things of you, there is a shift in your
attitude. You may become very curt and take things that go wrong as personal
failures.

Valuing Diversity
Recognizing your psychological opposite
Lumina , everyone has encountered people whose personas are the opposite of their own...
It is likely that you will be able to remember a time, or in fact several times, while you have been
working, when you have encountered people who appeared absolutely alien in their modes of
thinking and in the way they get things done. These people probably had a very different set of
persona scores to your own. Have a look at the mandalas below and compare your own to that of your
psychological opposite.
Your Persona:
Psychological opposite persona:
No matter who you are, there are many positives and negatives which can be drawn from working
with your psychological opposite. One main strength of working with someone so unlike yourself is
that you complement each other's weaknesses. Your strengths will be very useful in helping your
opposite deal with areas where they have 'blind spots' and vice versa. As long as your communication
remains good and you ensure nothing is misinterpreted you can have a very effective working
relationship as there will be very few problems that at least one of you cannot handle.
However, it is also possible that you can encounter difficulties when working with your opposite. You
may start to see them as the answer to all of your problems and place too great a weight of
expectation upon them. Try to develop your weaker qualities yourself. You should also try to aid your
psychological opposite's growth in dealing with their own "blind spots". Another problem which often
occurs is a breakdown in communication; because you think in very dissimilar ways it is easy for ideas
to get lost in translation.
One way you and your psychological opposite could work well together is that you can be very
cautious about new ideas, often for fear of being too carried away. Your opposite is not afraid to
break from tradition, while being careful not to take change too far.On the other hand, you and your
opposite could encounter problems because you find it very easy to come up with new ideas. You get
frustrated when your opposite can't keep up with your creative flow.

Working with your Opposite
Notes
What is good about working with your opposite:
Your opposite can introduce an element of risk that you may be
suppressing in your daily life. This will help you because every decision
contains an inherent risk. And because your opposite is also a cautious
person, they can help you decide whether or not a risk is worth
undertaking.
Your opposite can help you by setting clear and definite goals for you
to aim toward, as well as drawing attention to unexpected
circumstances and incorporating them into the final target.
Your opposite feels most comfortable when they have all the facts
established and they can back up their claims with solid proof. When
working together you can use their skill to provide tangible support
for your arguments.
Some problems you might encounter:
Your natural inclination to trust your gut feeling can become irrational
and hard to explain to your opposite. They may lose faith in you and
your decision making ability.
Your opposite can see you as unemotional due to your strong
analytical streak.
Some ideas to build your working relationship:
Try to resist your impulse to seize on every new idea that crosses your
path. Your opposite is unlikely to agree with your opportunistic style
and it can lead to delays while you investigate other options.
Try to recognize the values inherent in the ideas that your opposite
brings. Convey your appreciation before you begin a logical
deconstruction of them.

Seeing Yourself in Others
Recognizing your mirrored self
Sometimes your biggest blind spot is in the mirror...
You may find that you instinctively recognize when you are working with people who possess the
opposite qualities to your own. Because they are so dissimilar to you they are easier to
recognize as you find inconsistencies in the way you tend to work together. However, it may be
more difficult for you to recognize when you are having trouble working with someone who is
very similar to you.

Once again, there are pros and cons to this working relationship. When you are working with
someone who works in a manner similar to your own it can be very successful. Your strengths
mesh and you have an intuitive understanding of how you both think things through. You can
resolve issues before they arise by accommodating your partner's preferences prior to them
being voiced and vice versa.
One example of how you might find working together very easy is that you are both very
creative and you like to bounce ideas off other people. Together, the pair of you make a very
powerful 'ideas machine'. You will very rarely find yourself slowed down due to a lack of
creativity. Then again, here is an example of how you and your mirrored self might have
trouble working together. You are both very analytical and this means you have trouble
comforting each other in matters of emotional distress. This can lead to a weaker connection
between you.

Working with your Mirrored Self
Notes
What is good about working with your mirrored self:
You and your mirrored self both have an optimistic outlook which
allows you to treat setbacks as possibilities for future development.
This means that you both stay in a positive frame of mind even when
things are going badly.
You share a strong common sense, but you do not fall into the trap of
letting the practicalities blind you to the wider possibilities. You
engage in conceptual discussions with a view to enriching your
understanding of the immediate reality.
You both keep an open mind and don't discount possibilities which may
provide alternate means of reaching your goal.
Some problems you might encounter:
Sometimes you end up making different snap decisions due to your
individual instincts. It is nearly impossible to reconcile these
differences as you both have a lot of confidence in your intuition and
you recognize in each other the same stubborn belief in your gut
feelings.
You are both very analytical by nature and you can be too quick to
dismiss the feelings of others. This can make you appear quite a
heartless pair.
Some ideas to build your working relationship:
Don't let your desire for quick decisions get the better of you. You do
not have to compete with each other. Take time to think things over.
You could both use a bit more leniency in your approach. Other
people's subjective interpretations based on instinct might reveal
hidden truths more quickly than logic.

Your Communication Preferences
Notes
How you prefer to communicate with others:
When you have an idea, you want to act on it immediately. Your
enthusiasm then energizes those around you.
You like to turn theoretical ideas into practice, and are particularly
good at doing so due to your practical comprehension of abstract
concepts.
You like to work one‐on‐one and enjoy small group conversations.
Nevertheless, you do not shy away from taking the reins when it is
imperative to do so, and you ensure group roles are allocated
appropriately.
When talking about responsibility and other similar topics you tend to
have a very serious demeanor.
How you like others to communicate with you:
You get a lot out of talking to people about things you find interesting
and feel enthusiastic about.
You like people to put emphasis on the practical side of the project,
having established a solid conceptual base on which to work.
You like people who enjoy talking to you in a small group or alone,
then convey their ideas succinctly and to the point.
You like it when people are willing to place their trust in what you
say. This helps you to build confidence in each other.

Notes
What is likely to irritate you in other people's communication:
You don't like it when people challenge the practicality of your ideas.
You are a visionary ‐ you view it as your job to create the ideas and
someone else's to make them happen.
When people ask you to explain your ideas in a way that is focused
too much on only the theoretical side of things, or else only the
practicalities you are likely to become annoyed.
You hate being put in the position of having to compete with others
for attention in groups. Yet you don't like it when others expect your
time in lengthly one‐to‐one conversations.
You like firm commitments to the time and place for a meeting. You
are irritated by those who take a flexible approach to time
management.
Here are some suggestions to improve your communication with others:
Think more before speaking so you won't regret anything later. A slip
of the tongue can damage valuable working relationships.
Not everyone is as consistent as you when it comes to applying logic.
Try to encourage others to explain things to you in a logical fashion,
but be patient and don't dismiss them if they can't.
Sometimes the best approach is an evolving one. Accept that, while
you may prefer a definitive goal and plan, your environment may
dictate that a more fluid set up is needed. Know what will firm up the
goal and be prepared to focus when key decisions are taken.
Don't be afraid to challenge a process just because it has always been
done that way. If done constructively, it need not upset your
colleagues and can involve them in coming up with a better solution.

Creating a High Performing Team
Notes
Here are some ways you can be effective in building high performing teams:
Exercises like brainstorming and 'blue sky thinking' really play to your
strengths and others appreciate you for your creativity.
Your down to earth approach is very valuable when a team is starting
out and needs to look at its basic objectives. You can also make sure
that the team keeps one eye on the bigger picture.
You tend to adopt an informal approach to doing things which allows
you to adjust your style to those around you. This lends itself well to
teamwork, forming a bridge between other's styles and enabling
everyone in the group to get on.
Colleagues will see you as a team player because you spend time with
individuals in order to understand their personal views. You can then
take that understanding and use it to influence the team as a whole.
However sometimes you may overplay your strengths:
With your tendency to make decisions quickly, you may exclude others
who prefer to make more considered contributions.
You can be so logical that you forget to consider the impact on other
people. This can be damaging to those affected as well as upsetting
other team members.
You enjoy planning so much that you run the risk of keeping a team
too long in this phase of a project when they should be getting on
with the doing.
Just because you see the value in spending time thinking, doesn't
mean your team members will. They may just think you are
daydreaming.

Notes
Here are some blind spots you might encounter when it comes to working in
a team:
By sticking to your guns over the ways things should be done, others
may see you as stubborn and pig‐headed.
Your need to control a team's focus can prevent new or creative
solutions emerging.
You find it hard to concentrate on work that needs great attention to
detail. If your results are incorrect they can affect the conclusions of
the whole team.
You are not always a skilled diplomat and at times you may have
caused offense. Although your intention is to say something helpful, it
is not always received that way.
Here are some suggestions to improve your teamwork:
By allowing the diversity of thinking to be voiced, a team will be able
to be innovative and creative in the way they develop solutions and
work together.
Time management can be your friend. If you plan and organize your
work, you can spend less time thinking about it or putting it off.
If you feel you need thinking time, plan it in so that it doesn't impact
other people in the team. Then the results of your thinking can be
better received.
It is important to allow the team to explore all the alternatives before
choosing a joint course of action. The simplest solution may not be
the best one.
