These opportunities are possible because there is a tradition of and indeed a commitment to being “ready and willing”. What they did, they did for love. Nominations are put forth by staff and final selection is made by the Awards Committee. This award is considered the most prestigious Grade 12 award. McDonagh Award This is awarded to the graduate who best exemplifies the values of Saint Patrick. Nominations are put forth by staff and final selection is made by the Awards Committee. Amount: $200 Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 6 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary S P The Saint Patrick Academic and Athletic Award This award is presented to a male and female graduate who has best-combined achievement in academics and athletics. It is decided upon by combining Grade Point Average and athletic points, under the direction of the grade co-ordinator and athletic director. Amount: $200 each Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 7 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Artuso Brothers’ Scholarship for Computer Applications This is awarded to the graduate who has displayed excellence in the applied use of computers. The Information Technology department head decides upon the winner. The science department head in consultation with the Science Council of BC determines the winner. English Literature 10.History 11.Geography 12.Audio Visual 13.Choral Music 14.Art 15.Drama 16.Foods 17.PE Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 10 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Bishop Monroe Scholarship for Achievement in the Fine Arts This scholarship is presented to a Grade 12 student who has contributed outstanding service in the area of Fine Arts in his/ her senior years. The Head of Fine Arts, The Directors of Choral Activities and The Head of Drama select the recipient for this award. Amount: $250 Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 11 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Archbishop James Carney Scholarships These awards are presented to one female and one male Catholic graduate who best combine: o Christian example. o Academic achievement o Christian education achievement Winners are determined by the Christian Education department and the awards committee. The actual awarding of monies will be done upon the school receiving proof of registration in an approved post secondary institution. Amount: $1000 each Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 12 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Nicole Siemens Memorial Fine Arts Award This annual award is presented to a graduate who has displayed a love of art and intends to pursue fine art in his or her near future. Interested students must apply for the award in April. Applications will be reviewed by the Head of Fine Arts and/or the Scholarship Committee. Amount $500.00 Click to link to application form Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 13 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Flores Family Scholarship This award is presented to a graduate who intends to pursue a post-secondary education at a local university. The recipient must have displayed consistent academic achievement and the qualities of commitment and hard work in his or her senior years at Saint Patrick. Recipient is determined by the Awards Committee after candidates are nominated by the staff. Amount: $250 Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 14 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Royal Canadian Legion Mount Pleasant Branch #177 Scholarship This award is presented to a student who has achieved a high academic standing. If possible this individual should come from the Mount Pleasant area. Financial need can also be a consideration. Selection is made by the Awards Committee. Amount: $500 Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 15 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The 1989 Graduation Scholarship In Memory of Susan Walton and Craig Kelsch Two awards are presented to students who have demonstrated qualities of commitment and perseverance in his or her senior years in academics and athletics. Joyce Scholarship SAIN TP A REGIONAL SEC ON ICK TR This award goes to a student who has achieved a high academic standing through hard work and commitment and who has also contributed service to the community in a quiet, effective manner. Since Godfrey and Emilia valued education, it is expected that the recipient use the award for further education. Nominations are put forth by staff and final selection is made by the Awards Committee. RY DA Amount: $500 Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 17 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Genevieve and Frank Doyle Endowment SAIN TP A REGIONAL SEC ON ICK TR This Bursary is awarded to a student or graduate of Saint Patrick who has demonstrated strong potential as a lifelong learner in any area of the school curriculum. This Bursary will be issued to the institution of choice and is open for 5 years after graduation. Students must apply in writing to the awards co-ordinator prior to May 1st. Selection for this award is made by the awards committee. Recipient is determined by the Awards Committee. Amount: $300 Not awarded annually Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 19 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Sisters of Saint Joseph Memorial Scholarship Sponsored by the Class of 1972 The recipient of this award must exhibit the same attributes of hard work and dedication demonstrated by the Sisters of Saint Joseph during their years of service at Saint Patrick. Like the Sisters who valued education, it is expected that the recipient use the award for further education. Nominations are put forth by staff and final selection is made by the Awards Committee. Amount: $500 Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 21 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Gulf & Fraser Financial Group Scholarship Sponsored by the G&F Financial Group Mount Pleasant Branch This award(s) is presented to a graduate who has displayed the qualities of good citizenship, determination in academics and leadership in the community Recipient is determined by the Awards Committee after candidates are nominated by the staff. Amount: $1000 or two awards of $500 Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 22 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Choral Activities Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a student who has been involved in Choral Activities for at least three years and has displayed outstanding achievement, consistent commitment and leadership in the Choral program. The award should be used to support continued interest in Choral Music. The director of Choral Activities makes the selection for this award from candidates who apply for the scholarship. The Choral Director initiates the Application process by mid-April. All Applications must be submitted no later than May 1st. Amount: $1000 Return to Awards List Click to link to application form Graduation Awards 2013 23 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Redemptorist Award for Speech Arts and Drama Sponsored by Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish This scholarship is presented to a student who has demonstrated excellence in Speech Arts and/or Drama in the senior years. The Head of Drama, Head of English and the awards committee select the successful candidate. Amount: $300 Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 24 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Joy (Fernandes) Szulc Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a student who intends to pursue a career in education. The recipient of this award must apply by May 1st. Nominations are put forth by staff and final selection is made by the Awards Committee. Amount: $300 Click to link to application form Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 25 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Archbishop Exner Respect for Life Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a student who has been involved in and provided leadership in the school’s Respect for Life Club between grades 8-12. The moderator of the Respect for Life Club selects the recipient for this award. Amount: $500 Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 26 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Saint Patrick Academic Scholarship This scholarship is presented to a student who has achieved the highest in-class academic standing in four provincially examinable courses. Nominations are put forth by staff and final selection is made by the Awards Committee. Amount: $500 Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 27 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Class of 1990 Renaissance Scholarship The Class of 1990 Renaissance Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating student who embodies the ideals of the Class of 1990: broad-ranging academic excellence, commitment to lifelong learning and service to the Saint Patrick and larger communities. Sometimes referred to as the Unsung Hero Scholarship, this award is supported and adjudicated by the Saint Patrick Class of 1990. Amount: $300 Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 28 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Saint Patrick Regional Education Committee Scholarships These awards are presented to one female and one male Catholic graduate who best combine: o Christian example to his/her peers through their own witness o Academic achievement o Involvement in his or her Parish (supported by a Pastor’s letter) o Involvement in the school community. Interested students must apply for the award in April. Once all applicants have applied, the Scholarship Committee selects the winner. Veloso Memorial Scholarship Sponsored by the Quiroz Family This award is presented to a graduate who wishes to pursue a career in the Culinary Arts. Interested students must apply for the award in April. Once all applicants have applied, the Scholarship Committee selects the winner. Amount: $500 Click to link to application form Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 30 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The GVCCU Book Awards These awards are presented to two graduates who have displayed the qualities of perseverance or excellence in the pursuit of knowledge. Recipient is determined by the Awards Committee after candidates are nominated by the staff. (Book Award) Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 31 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary The Governor General’s Medal This award is presented to the top student in the graduating class. The winner is determined by using the highest average in all Grade 11 and 12 courses. Calculations are to combine school and provincial percentages. Amount: $250 Sponsored by the Greater Vancouver Community Credit Union The Winner also receives the Governor General’s Medal. Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 32 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary External Awards and Scholarship Information Annually, Saint Patrick graduates are awarded a number of scholarships offered by external organizations including: universities, colleges, the Ministry of Education and a variety of community organizations. Each sponsoring institution will have specific criteria for their awards. Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 33 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary Provincial Scholarships Graduation Program Examinations Scholarship Provincial Scholarships are awarded based on the results of the five mandatory provincial examinations in Grades 10, 11 and 12 (from the following categories): Language Arts 10 (English 10) Sciences 10 Mathematics 10 Social Studies 11 Language Arts 12 (English 12 or Communications 12) Students can earn a provincial scholarship of $1000.00 based on their results on these examinations. To earn the scholarship, students need to finish amongst the top 5000 students in the province. Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 34 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary Dogwood District/Authority Awards Beginning in the 2006/07 school year, the District Scholarship Program name will change to the “Dogwood District/Authority Awards”. The allocation of these awards will increase from approximately 500 awards to 3000 awards to be pro-rated to school districts/authorities, based on district enrolment. The award amount will remain the same at $1000 distributed in two parts ($500 cheque and $500 voucher). The Dogwood District/Authority Awards will be available to graduates who excel in any of the following areas: • • • • Fine Arts (Visual Arts, Dance, Drama, Music) Applied Skills ( Business Ed, Technology Ed, Home Economics) Physical Activity (not limited to Physical Education) Second Languages (including Aboriginal Languages) As before, students must apply for these awards and must meet the criteria determined by the local district scholarship committee as well as meet the basic eligibility requirements outlined by the Ministry of Education (see Ministry of Education Handbook of Procedures). A student will be able to receive both a Dogwood District/Authority Award and a Grade 12 Graduation Program Examinations Scholarship. Return to Awards List Graduation Awards 2013 37 Saint Patrick Regional Secondary Valedictorian and Salutatorian Guidelines Valedictorian: St. Patrick’s Valedictorian is elected by the graduation class to speak on their behalf at the graduation ceremony. Salutatorian: St. Patrick’s Salutatorian is elected by the graduation class to welcome guests at the graduation ceremony. Selection Criteria: To qualify for selection students must meet the following criteria: Finish on the First Honours list after the April Report Card and be in good standing with the Administration.
