Describe a topographic map.
A map showing changes in elevations of Earth’s surface.
How may a topographic map be used?
Hiking, camping, land management, real estate development, firefighting, mining,
logging, construction management, city and county planning, golf course design.

What is the same for every point on the same contour line on a topographic map?
Each point on a contour line connects a spot that is the same elevation/height from sea
level.
Why do contour lines almost never cross or touch?
Since each contour line is a different elevation point, one contour line cannot be at two
different elevations.

1. 180 feet
2. Hiker B – shortest distance, very steep slope (contour lines close)
Hiker A started on a gradual slope and ended steeper slope, traveled farther than
hiker B
Hiker C longest hike but most gradual slope, contour lines farthest apart.
3. The path hiker B took would experience most weathering from rainfall because it had
the steepest slope. The water flowing down the hill closest to bottom will have the
greatest amount of kinetic energy. Potential energy greatest at top (gravity).

1. What drives convection in the atmosphere?
The Sun
2. Draw a diagram with arrows to show how convection drives the movement of air
showing land and sea breezes.
3. Write a brief explanation of how convection causes land and sea breezes.
At night water holds the heat from the day so the air above the sea is warmed and
rises. Land-cooled air replaces the warmer rising air forming a land breeze.
During the day the air is warmed more by the land. The warm less dense air rises
and is replaced by the cooler ocean air causing a sea breeze.

What causes the day/night cycle we experience on Earth?
The Earth’s rotation on it’s axis every 24 hours.
What causes the four seasons cycle we experience on Earth?
The Earth’s 23.5o tilt on it’s axis AND it’s orbit/revolution around the Sun.

STAAR Test – Reading
1. A chemical reaction DID NOT occur.
No new substance formed. Temp changes resulted from energy transformation from
water to ice.
2. Chemical reaction DID occur.
Gas was produced showing chemical reaction.
3. Chemical reaction DID occur.
A new substance (Precipitate) formed and temperature changed.
4. A chemical reaction DID NOT occur.
Change in color and temp caused BY HEATING not from a chemical change.
