 Definition- word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or
another adverb
 Will typically recognize adverbs by the –ly suffix
Adverbs and words they modify
 Answers 1 of the 4 questions:
 Where?
 When?
 In what way?
 To what extent?
Adverb modifying verb or verb
phrase
 Can answer any of the 4 questions.
 When adverb modifies verb or verb phrase, can come
before or after verb or verb phrase. Could even come
within the verb phrase.
Adverb modifying adjective or
another adverb
 Can only answer question- To what extent?
 When adverb modifies adjective or another adverb, it
typically comes immediately before the adjective or
adverb.

Adverb or Adjective
 Remember: an adverb modifies a verb, an adjective,
or another adverb.
 Adjectives modifies a noun or pronoun.
 Generally adverbs and adjectives have different forms.
Many adverbs, in fact, are formed by adding –ly to an
adjective. Be careful though, not all words that end on
–ly will be adverbs.
