!
OnSaturday14thNovember,theMillenniumHallhostedtheannualPoetrySpeakingContestorganised
bythetalentedMirandaPowellandadjudicatedonceagainbyMrsSusanFord.Theeventwasthe
culminationofaprojectthatsaweverychildintheschoolundergoingtuitioninhowtoperforma
selectedpoemtoahighstandard.Thepupilswereurgedtoexplorecharismaticfacialexpression,
crystalcleardictionanddynamicvocalexpression.Withfourpupilsfromeachyeargoingthroughto
the8inal,therewasanimpressivestandardonshow.Every8inalistdeservesrecognitionand
commendationfortheirsuperbcourageandaptitudeinfrontofanenormouscrowd.Oneofthemost
memorableremarksthattheadjudicatorquiterightlypointedoutwasthatthischallengedemanded
arguablyevenmorebraverythanaplaymonologueas,withthehouselightsilluminated,youcansee
hundredsofpeoplewatchingyourperformance,whereasinaplay,thestagelightsprotectyoufrom
overseeingthegazingeyesoutintheaudience.Withahugelydiverseselectionofpoemsonshow,it
wasathoroughlyenjoyablemorninghadbyall.Manycongratulationstothewinnersandalsotoevery
Westbournepupilforcourageouslytacklingthisexcitingproject.

T h e Ye a r 5 s t u d e n t s 8 i re d u p t h e i r
imaginations and got into the festive spirit
with a poetry competition. All students were
giventhechoiceofwritingapoemfromoneof
three categories: 'Mary’s story', 'What
Christmas Means To Me’ or ‘Winter’. Once all
poems had been tweaked, edited and perfected,
weheldclassheatstoseewhowouldgothrough
theGrandFinal.Eachgroupselectedsix8inalists-
the quality was fabulous and it was a dif8icult
tasktonarrowitdown
toonlysix!

TheafternoonoftheFinalarrived.All188inalists
readtheirpoemsinfrontoftheyeargroupandanX-Factorjudgingpanel(aka
Mr Allum, Mrs Pollock and Mrs Watson) before the four winners who would read their
poemsaloudattheYear5/6CarolServicewereselected.Each8inalisthasbeenawardedan
EnglishDepartmentaward.

Well done to all involved; what a wonderful way to bring the festive season into the

KallikidsShortStoryCompetition
!
We have published writers in our midst! After entering the Kallikids Short Story
Competition 2015, we had no fewer than four 8inalists: Monty Marley, Phoebe Wheeler,
JulietteBinningandAliceWelch.Gettingtothe8inalwasnomeanfeatastherewereover
400 entries in the Sussex based competition. Award winning author Joanna Rees was the
8inaljudgeand,afterreadingthroughallthe8inalentries,selectedthewinnersfromeach
agegroup.Fromthis,AliceWelchwasselectedasrunnerupfortheY5category(nowYear
6)andPhoebeWheelerwasselectedastheYear6(nowYear7)overallwinner.Bothgirls’
stories are now published in the competition’s book. Phoebe and Alice were awarded a
hard copy of the book in assembly which is also available for download (an email with
instructionstodosowillfollowforallparents).

TheDepartmentwereabsolutelydelightedtoseesuchawonderfulrepresentationofour

ThisyearcompetitorswillbechallengedtohelpHarrytrackdowntheReichsdoktorinpostwarBerlin.Hisenemiesarecunningandthestorywillunfoldinaseriesofshortencrypted

Thedaykickedoffwiththechildrentaking
tothecatwalktoparadetheiramazing
Romancostumes.Theythenhadtoearn
theirRomancitizenshipbymakinglaurel
wreaths.OnceacitizenofRome,the
childrenenjoyedtestingtheirmemorywith
aRomanartefactsquizandmakinglionand
gladiatorpuppets.
TheYear3childrenandstaffindulged
themselvesonadelectableRomanbanquet
ofstuffeddormice,succulent,8ingerlicking
8ishroastedpeacock’slegs.Averitable
feastindeed.Needlesstosay,thewild
boer’sheadwasnotvotedasdishofthe

SothegloriousIndiansummerturnedintooneofthewarmestautumnsonrecord,but
unfortunatelyalmosteveryWednesdayandSaturdayblackcloudsseemedtogatherover
WestbourneandsentthePEstaffscurryingtolookatMrBarker’strustyweatherforecasting
phone.Asifbattlingwithelementswasn’tenough,wewerealsohitbyinjuriesandillness-and
tenmatcheswerecancelledinthelastweekoftermbecauseouropponentswereinquarantine!
Inspiteoftheseproblemswehavemanaged
toplayalmosthalfofour8ixturessincehalf
term.Thehockeyteamsfaredslightly
betterthanthenetballersastheastrois
usuallyplayablewhatevertheweather,
someteamsseemedtospendmostoftheir
timegettingsoaked!HowevertheFarleigh
U13hockeytournamentwascancelled,not
becauseoftheweather,butbecausetheir
newastrowasn’tyetready!Somerapid
8ixturejigglingfollowedandattwoday’s
noticewehostedatriangular8ixturewith
FarleighandTwyford,sotheafternoonwas
notwasted.Weemergedwithhonourseven,
beatingFarleigh4-0,butlosingtoavery
strongTwyfordside.Aweeklaterwehosted
ourowntournamentandourAs
unfortunatelyencounteredTwyfordagain,
losing1-2thistime,butwinningtheirother
gamesto8inish2ndoverall.FloraMackenzie
wasthetopscoreroftheday,withGemma
Kendallreceivingtheawardforthemost
valuedplayer.AtthispointtheU12As,who
werecalledintoplayinthetournamentat
thelastminutewhenateamdroppedout,

haveallbeenselectedfortheSussex
hockeysquad.
Itisthenetballerswhosufferthemostwhenitrains,aseventhebestkeptcourts(andWestbourne
courtsareknownasbeingtheamongthesafestonthecircuitinthewet)becomeslipperyand
injuriesresult.HowevertheWestbourneU11ATournamentsurvived(onlyjust,asitwasplayedin
mistydrizzle)andtheAteamshone,winningalltheir8irstroundmatches,andtoppingtheirsection.
UnfortunatelytheythensuccumbedtoaverytallCranleighteaminthesemi8inals,butshowedgreat
charactertocomebackfrombeingagoaldownagainstBrightonCollege,andwinbytwogoals,
securingthirdplaceoverall.CharlieHowellandLaraSimpsonwereselectedasthetwostar
Westbourneplayersoftheday.
TheUnder9netballershadaverydisappointingsecondhalfofterm:boththeirtournaments
(atCranleighandTwyford)succumbedtotheweather,asdid6oftheirnormalmatches.Of
thefourgamesthatwereplayed,theAswonbothoftheirs,andtheBswononeandlosttoa
DunhurstteamwhichwasamixofYear4sand5s.ItisagreatshamethattheY4swere
unabletodemonstratetotheirparentshowhardtheyhaveworked,andhowmuchtheyhave
improvedsincehalfterm,becausethetransformationinboththeAsandtheBsisquite
remarkable!

!
TheswimmerswontheirgalawithHurstby11points,
thismaysoundlikeanarrowvictory,butweactuallywon
20ofthe29events.HoweverasHurst,depletedby
exams,onlybroughtoneswimmerperevent(to
Westbourne’stwo)ourBswimmersdidnotscore-in
spiteofwinningthreeoftheraces!JemimaLaurenceand
FraserLynedeservespecialmentionsastheywonbothof
theirindividualeventsandtheirrelays,inspectacularly
convincingstyle.CharlieStewart,inYear4,receivedthe
list:hewonhisrace,inspiteofbeingaBteamswimmer
andhugelyimprovedhisPBtime.

Outofschool,congratulationsgotoIndiaRose,whois
nowtheSussexUnderTwelve50metrebackcrawl

producedtheirbestperformancesoftheseasonwithGeorgeFountain,GusJames,JackMcCulloch
andCaptainTedEismarkbeingawardedtheirSchoolcolours.
RoccoGamblinhasbeenselectedforSussexEliteU11torepresentthecountyandEnglandinthe
GothacupinSweden:thiscombinedwithhisPortsmouthacademyfootball,inanextremely
competitiveselection,deservesourcongratulations.DominicRussell,JoshRankand
CharlieMorisonhavealsobeenselectedfortheU12developmentsquadandalsoheadingfor
Sweden.Congratulationstoall.

WhatanamazingexperiencefortheboysandFlora,whichthisyearincludedaRhinocaptureas
partoftheitinerary.Forthe8irsttimewewereabletoplaybothAandBteam8ixtures.Intotal
wehad118ixtures,won5lost5withonerainedoff.JackMcCullochscoredtwoexcellenthalf

It'sbeenalongandbusytermfortheboarders.Itseemslikesuchalongtimeagothatchildren
arrivedbackatschoolatthestartofSeptemberinthesummersun.Whatabusytimetheboarding
communityhashadsincemylastupdateathalfterm.
WewereveryfortunatetohavesuchcalmweatherforourBon8ireNightwhichwasahuge
success.AfewthankyousmustgotoMrGeffen,thegroundstaff,MrGroutandthecateringteam
foralltheydidtomaketheeveningsuchasuccess.MrsFrithandhertrustyhelpersyetagaindida
tremendousjobcreatingtheguy,sothankyouforthatand8inally,notforgettingahugethankyou
toeveryonewhomadedonationstothe8ireworkfund,withoutthemitwouldn’thavebeenmuch
ofabon8irenight!
Boardersactivitieshavetakenonanewlifewiththechildrenworkingtowardsaboardersbadge.Not
everyonehasgotthroughtheactivitiesyetbutdoaskyourchildrenaboutsignlanguageandhowto
bakesomestickbread!
Thisreallyisamagicaltimeofyeartobeinvolvedinboardingandthechildren’senthusiasmforall
thingsChristmassycanbutliftthespiritsduringwhatisabusyperiod.AsIwritethisIknowthat
theboardinghousesareinthethroesoftheirChristmascelebrations.SecretSantawhisperingsare
thetalkofallthedormsafterlightsout!MainHousecarolsinging,feasts,Christmastree
decoratingandIamsuretheoddmincepiehaveallbeenparforthecourseoverthelastweekof
term.OfcourseitwouldbewrongofmenottomentionthehighlyanticipatedRollerDiscowhich,
yetagain,wasahugesuccesswiththechildren(andsomeoftheboardingstaff!!).
Year7BeeswingandDowerHousetriptoClothkitsChichester,wheretheyallmadeastringofbuntingeach.
Theyabsolutelylovedit.
Itisthetimeofyearwhenwemustsaysomegoodbyestoourwonderfulgappers.Emma(Miss
Buckthorpe),Annie(MissParnell)andSeb(MrParsons)havecontributedenormousamountsofeffort,
energyandenthusiasmtoboardingsincetheyjoineduslastJanuaryandtheplacereallywillnotbethe
samewithoutthemwhenwereturn.Wewishthemallthebestofluckwiththeirnextstepsasthey
returntosomewhatsunnierandwarmerclimesbackhomeinAustralia.Thankyouandgoodluck.

OntheeveoftheAutumnhalf-term,theYear4’ssetforthfortheirannualonenightresidentialtripto
theNewForest!AmuchanticipatedtripandaperfectintroductiontotheWestbourneAward.An
outdoorteamofspecialistsorganisedarangeofstimulatingactivitiesforthechildren,whichgave
themplentyofopportunitiestoworkandthriveinateamenvironment,reinforcingthevirtuesof
togetherness,helpingandsupportingothers.Thechildrenhadplentyoftimetorelaxandenjoythe
idylliccountrysideandenjoysomewonderfulheartygrub.Thechildrenwereexemplary.Itwasgreat
tobeabletospendqualitytimewiththemoutsidetheclassroom.WelldoneYear4.

carpentryprojectsaroundtheschool,butsafetosaythat50yearsisamightylongtime!His
father,Bob,alsoworkedattheschoolfromtheveryearliestdaysoftheShamans’ownershipand
soasafatherandsonteam,theyspanagrandtotalinexcessof55years!Wethankmost
sincerelyRobertforsuchanincrediblenumberofyearsservice,forhisloyaltyandhardwork
andwishhimalltheverybestforalongandhappyretirement.NickHazellwillbejoiningthe
maintenanceteamashisreplacement.

toperformHowtoHostaVIP,aproductiondesignedtoenticeall8iftypupilstoattemptagiant
assortmentofabsurdandhair-brainedcharacterswithinadiversesetofescapades.Underonetheme
ofhostingVIPs,allofthechildren,regardlessofactingabilityorpastexperience,werethrowninat
thedeependand,armedwithextravagantcostumes,audacioushairdosandalorryfullofprops.
ScenariosincludedabotchedplantostealtheMonaLisausingintelligencefromaformerguard,
hijinkswithRichardBranson30,000feetupinthehair,arescueplanatTheGlobetosaveaRoyal
performance,aMurderMysteryNightgonewrongandadayinthelifeofFawltyTowers.Itwas
enjoyabletowitnesssomanyofthechildrenonstage.Fromthenaturalperformersstretching
themselveswithdif8icultcharacterisationtothepreviouslyshyandapprehensivelookingto
transcendtheirperceivedboundariesofcreativecon8idence,itwasafun,all-inclusivecelebrationof
Drama8launtingeverybody’sartistic8laironstage.EnormousthankstoMargoDoddforher
incredibledevotiontothecostumesandpropsaswellastoEloiseRankandSophieWheelerforcocoordinatingsuchatalentedhairandmakeupteam.

CarolsbeganringingoutfromtheMusicSchoolalmostassoonasthechildrenreturnedfromhalf
term,aspreparationsforChristmasgotunderway!

ThebeginningofNovembersawTheFestivalofDuetsandFamilyEnsembles,whichwasonceagaina
hugelyenjoyableevening.Groupslargeandsmall,ofbothfriendsandfamily,createdsomelovely
performances.Ifyouhaven’tpickedupaninstrumentforyears,nextyear’seventmightwellbe
somethingtoaimfor!Thiswascloselyfollowedbyatoe-tappingperformancebyBritonica,aband
frontedbyoneofourguitarteachers,DaveSoothill.Certainly,anybuddingrockstarsintheaudience
wouldhavebeeninspiredtogetpractising!

Theschoolconcertaweeklaterwasonceagainatrulyimpressiveevening,withperformancesfrom
alloftheschool’smusicalensembles,notablytheBigBand,playing‘Gold8inger’,theChapelChoir,
JuniorChoirandOrchestra,whogaveaveryaccomplishedperformanceofthethememusicfrom
“Amadeus’,alongwitharousingrenditionofHolst’s‘Jupiter’totieinwithRemembranceDayearlier
thatweek.

TheendofNovembersawtheAdventCarolServicetakeplaceinBoxgrovePriory.Alwaysa
wonderfuloccasion,manyparentsandstaffcommentedthatithadbeen‘oneofthebest’.Thisisa
very8ittingwaytoenterthefestiveseason,withthebeautifulPriorytransformingfromdarktolight
accompaniedbyreadingsandmusicbytheChapelChoir.Aparticularhighlightwastheduetby
ConnieHolbenandFloraBigham,singing‘Heshallfeedhis8lock’fromHandel’sMessiahandsolos
fromTobyLoeffen-Ames,LilyHarriesandGeorgiaHowell.

SeveralpupilsperformedintheChichesterGuitarFestivalattheRegisSchoolofMusicinBognor.
LukeSkinnerandOllyHarrisbothplayedexceptionallywellandTimmyWergangaveanoutstanding
performancetowintheSoloOpenClass.Therehavebeenagoodnumberofmusicexamsthisterm,

chattingwiththeresidents.TheYear3/4and
Year5/6carolservicestookplaceon
Wednesdayafternoon,andbothwerewell
attendedbystaffandparents.Choirmusic
andcongregationalcarolswereinterspersed
withbiblereadingsandpoetry.Lastlythe
seniorcarolservicewasaveryuplifting
event,withmusicfromthecombinedYear
7/8andChapelChoirs,includingRutter’s
‘Angels’Carol’andJoubert’s‘Torches’.
MusicColoursthistermwereawardedtoPoppyTallisandCommunityColours(forservicesto
ChapelChoir)wereawardedtoHeadChoristersConnieHolbenandTobyLoeffen-Ames.

CompetitionwillbegininearnestinJanuaryandtheChapelChoirwillbeputtingthe8inishing
