the wider community.
Core services
Building services engineering
Cundall offers an end-to-end service, extending from
initial planning to construction fit-out, plus lifetime
facilities management. Our mission is to help design
sustainable buildings which are more energy efficient
and cost-effective to operate.
Integration with our in-house civil and structural
engineering and specialist teams enables us to devise
the best possible solutions to ensure your building is
holistic, sustainable and future-proofed.
Our approach is focused on giving best value by:
ƒƒ Analysing what you want from your building;
ƒƒ Considering the appropriate design options and
ƒƒ Working out what is most appropriate for your particular location, development and budget, to deliver sustainable business benefits.
Structural engineering
Cundall provides structural engineering design
services with our renowned analytical creativity and
ingenuity. We have a high level of repeat clients as
a result. To deliver maximum value to our clients,
we seek to be involved in projects from the outset,
allowing us to contribute our innovative and practical
solutions. This creates the greatest benefit and
minimises the risk to budget and programme. We
make a difference throughout a project.
Civil engineering
Civil engineering is one of Cundall’s core services and
covers all sectors of the construction industry.
We help to create, improve and protect the
environment in which we live. We provide the facilities
for day-to-day life and for transport and industry to
function effectively. We aim to help you identify both
the constraints placed on development by regulatory
requirements and site conditions and the opportunities
that can be created by practical and innovative
design. We will work closely with the project team
and stakeholders to ensure the project deliverables
and goals are achieved or exceeded while providing
sustainable solutions.
Sustainable design
Cundall is positioned at the forefront of sustainability in
the built environment because we take a refreshingly
positive approach to engineering design, fostering
collaboration and creativity. We are driven by the
consideration of people. We know how ‘going green'
and commercial pragmatism can happily coexist and
have used this knowledge on all our projects.
We can provide a service to suit your aspirations as
we have experience from cost-effective compliance
with the latest energy and environmental legislation to
achieving a specific green rating or to the delivery of a
zero carbon building.
5
Specialist services
Acoustics
Cundall’s team has significant experience in all aspects of acoustics, noise
and vibration, covering site planning, infrastructure, architecture and
engineering. Our team is passionate about good acoustic design, ensuring that
our clients meet the necessary standards and legislation by offering practical
and cost-effective solutions that add value, exceeding client expectations.
Building Information Modelling (BIM)
BIM is a computer aided process focused on the development, use and
transfer of information to create a digital model of a building project. The BIM
process can be used at any stage of a building's life cycle and helps to
improve design, construction and operations of a project. Our practice-wide
BIM strategy enables our projects to be cheaper to build, faster to construct
and ultimately more energy efficient within their lifespan.
Building automation
Cundall’s team provide expertise in the design and implementation of control
and building management systems. The objective of our designs is to make
sure that a building provides the occupants with an optimised environment
which they can easily monitor and control whilst ensuring that capital expenditure
is minimised and operational savings and building efficiencies are maximised.
Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM)
DCIM software has the potential to reduce energy consumption and reduce
the management overhead associated with planning the deployment of new
IT systems within existing data centres. It provides a more granular approach
to data centre energy management and potentially unites the IT and Facilities
view.
6
Fire engineering
Cundall’s team works with our clients to ensure that their buildings not only
comply with the relevant legislation, but also provide a safe environment in the
most cost-effective manner, without compromising the architectural integrity
of the design. We understand the importance of good fire protection and are
in a position to help you.
Geotechnical engineering
Cundall’s specialist geotechnical engineers bring together technical expertise
in the disciplines of environmental science, environmental engineering,
engineering geology, foundation engineering and geotechnics. This results in
trusted, cost effective and robust solutions for all in-ground risks.
IT and audio visual
Information, telecommunications and audio visual systems are essential
components of any business. We enable our clients to ensure these systems
are designed in to a building from the outset - meeting strategic aims,
improving flexibility and avoiding compromise. Our approach extends from
strategy and business case support right through to business relocation.
Lighting design
Light is an essential component in defining what we see, how we feel, how we
interact with one another and the environment around us. We offer specialist
lighting design and expertise, carefully considering all the elements of the
process - landscape lighting strategies, daylight design, architectural lighting
design and ultra efficient lighting design and commissioning.
Planning
Cundall offers a planning service that is comprehensive, well-informed and
good value for money. We advise and guide you through the planning system,
working as part of your team and managing the process. We carry out public
consultations and prepare specialist reports to justify schemes and secure
planning consent.
Survey solutions
Survey solutions provides developers, building owners/occupiers and
contractors with a one-stop shop for a broad selection of surveys relating to
the built environment, covering the entire lifecycle from concept, through
completion to operation. We can provide surveys and reports to provide
information you need to take things forward.
Transportation
Cundall’s Transportation team are specialists in planning and designing
sustainable transport infrastructure in both urban and rural areas. We develop
innovative solutions to match client's aspirations, budget and time frames.
We can offer a whole lifecycle approach from identifying measures, designing

Our Scottish Projects
Adam Smith College, Stenton Campus, Glenrothes
Client Adam Smith College
Services Building services, civil and
structural engineering, BREEAM
assessment and transportation
Architect CDA
Cundall worked with Adam Smith College on the masterplan for the
redevelopment of the college's Stenton Campus in Glenrothes. This included
the design of a new Engineering and Science building and the remodelling
of the existing tower block, cafeteria and reception area.
The new 8,200m2 Engineering and Science building was the first element
in the process and consequently sets the standard by creating an iconic
entrance and street-scape for the college, providing a welcoming and
modern vision for staff and students alike.
9
Barrhead Health and Social Care Facility, Glasgow
Client NHS Glasgow/Renfrewshire
Council
Services Building services, civil,
structural, fire and geotechnical
engineering
Architect Avanti Architects
Barrhead Health and Social Care is a new 5,700m2 building that provides both
healthcare facilities for the communities in and around the Barrhead area of
Renfrewshire and office accommodation for Renfrewshire Council staff.
Situated on a sloping site, the 3-storey building provides consulting rooms for
GPs, rooms for dental services, outreach staff, podiatry treatment, facilities for
minor surgical procedures and meeting rooms. The waiting area is situated
in the central atrium, with bridges at each upper floor level providing access
within the building.
The building is naturally ventilated, with mechanical ventilation in zones where
there is a clinical need. Heat recovery recuperators are used to minimise the
energy consumption to heat fresh air and to minimise waste heat rejected
from the building. The atrium makes use of natural ventilation to dissipate
heat via high-level automatic opening louvres. The louvres also act as part of
a smoke control system designed to maintain tenable conditions within the
atrium space.
10
Waverley Court, City of Edinburgh Council Headquarters, Edinburgh
Client Morley/Nulap
Services Building services engineering
Architect BDP
Waverley Court, the headquarters for The City of Edinburgh Council, was
procured as a commercially let development. The key objective was to create
a landmark building which would demonstrate environmental excellence in all
aspects of design and function, with exceptional levels of accessibility. The
building achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating due to the combined efforts
of the design and construction team.
The project was constructed in the heart of Edinburgh, on a tight city centre
site adjacent to Waverley Station. Although the station is one of Britain's
busiest, the design and planning before construction of Waverley Court
meant there was no impact on the station throughout the construction period.
11
Eden Court Theatre and Cinema, Inverness
Client Eden Court Highlands Ltd
Services Building services
engineering
Architect Page and Park
Following its redevelopment, Eden Court in Inverness is now the largest arts
centre in Scotland.
The upgrade increased the capacity of the main auditorium and established
a second 250 seat theatre. Other elements included refurbishment of the
front and back of house facilities, two new cinemas, improved office
accommodation and better landscaping, parking and access areas. Work
also included upgrading the historic Bishop's Palace.
Eden Court was one of the first buildings in Scotland to use stack-assisted
natural ventilation to reduce energy consumption and cut operating costs
for the theatre and cinema. Other sustainable solutions that were adopted
included solar panels for the provision of hot water to the kitchens and
showers.
12
Upper Strand, Edinburgh
Client Places for People/The Burrell
Company
Services Civil and structural
engineering
Architect Elder and Cannon/Reiach
and Hall
Upper Strand was the first development to be progressed on the waterfront in
Edinburgh's central development area. It was designed as a 'flagship' project
to set the quality standard for future buildings.
The project comprised approximately 500 residences in a mix of social
housing and privately owned apartments with ground floor retail units. These
were grouped in sensitively designed medium rise buildings of three, four and
five stories. They were complemented by two landmark towers - a 12-storey
North Tower and a 10-storey South Tower.
There were a number of engineering challenges to overcome, as investigations
showed the site had high ground water levels and variable fill material. It was
also contaminated due to a former petrochemical installation. The team
undertook second stage remediation works to reduce contamination to
acceptable levels and followed this with ground improvement works by using
vibro replacement and piling for the tower block.
13
Pumpherston and Uphall Community Primary School, West Lothian
Client West Lothian Council
Services Building services, civil,
structural and geotechnical engineering
and transportation
Architect West Lothian Council
Pumpherston and Uphall Community Primary School is a single stream
primary school with community facilities, located within a wider development
area. The school replaced two existing schools within the catchment and is
designed to be extendible thus accommodating additional demand arising
from anticipated future residential development.
This state-of-the-art school includes eight classrooms, an assembly hall,
a nursery, a community library, sports area and playground. It was the first
school to be opened under the £1.25bn Scotland’s Schools for the Future.
14
Parkway, Newbury, Berkshire, England
Client Standard Life Investments with
Shearer Property Group
Services Building services, civil,
structural and geotechnical engineering
and sustainable design
Architect BDP
This development transformed the town-centre of Newbury with a vibrant
'streetscape' retail-led mixed use scheme supplemented by nearly 200
residential units. The project was delivered as part of the West Berkshire
District Council's UDP ‘2025 - A Vision for Newbury’.
Designed from the Edinburgh office, the scheme was developed by Standard
Life Investments alongside Shearer Property Group. Parkway provides over
30,000m2 of retail space at street level and includes two major anchor stores
a 7,000m2 Debenhams and a 5,000m2 John Lewis At Home. These are
supplemented with 40 shops, a mix of MSU’s and unit shops and public
realm space surrounded by ‘al fresco’ cafes adjacent to the River Kennet. The
scheme includes underground car parking for over 750 cars under two-thirds
of the footprint and separate surface level servicing areas for goods deliveries.
15
Garrison House, Isle of Cumbrae
Client Cumbrae Community
Development Company
Services Building services engineering
Architect Lee Boyd
Sitting in its own grounds in the centre of Millport town, Garrison House is
now the vibrant hub of the island community, serving locals and visitors
alike. Fully restored to its former glory, Garrison House was redesigned to
create a multi-use building. It now boasts the local NHS Medical Centre,
a state-of-the-art library, the Museum of the Cumbraes, the Courtyard Cafe
and the North Ayrshire local council office.
Prior to its refurbishment and redevelopment the Grade B listed, Gothic revival
stone building had been lying derelict following serious fire damage in 2001.
Work on the redevelopment included a large proportion of stonework
replacement in both the new and old sections of the building. The services
were carefully designed to integrate within the existing listed building.
16
University of Stirling, Halls of Residence, Stirling
Client University of Stirling
Services Building services
engineering and BIM modelling
Architect Lewis and Hickey
The project comprises the construction of 750 student appointment within
a sensitive, listed, landscaped campus setting. The development is phased
and so far 480 beds have been constructed - consisting of townhouses and
clustered buildings. These completed builds have been awarded BREEAM
'Excellent' for design.
The next phase involves the decanting and demolition of the old buildings and
construction of their replacements. This will take place over three years and
a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating is also envisaged for these. The energy strategy
will be focused on the existing site wide district heating scheme and the
inclusion of a CHP installed at the central campus.
17
Dancebase, Edinburgh
Client Dancebase Ltd
Services Structural engineering
Architect Malcolm Fraser Architects
Cundall's brief for this project was to create a building which would provide
an uplifting environment for its students. Dancebase's new studio, with a
magnificent backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, provides views of the city and is
combined with elegant architectural structures, glass roofs and etched glass
floors.
The elegance of the superstructure masks a site of huge engineering
complexity. There was no means of direct access to the site and neighbouring
properties had to be supported above while boundary excavations were
carried out to create the basement.
Due to the lack of access, conventional construction techniques could not
be used so Cundall unlocked the site for development using a variety of
innovative solutions and specialist techniques. These included a mini-piled
access road on the upper slopes, an anchored mini-piled retaining wall,
ground anchors and soil nailing to strengthen an existing retaining wall.
18
New Arts Faculty Building, University of St Andrews, Fife
Client University of St Andrews
Services Civil and structural
engineering
Architect Reiach and Hall
The New Arts Faculty Building is a contemporary building which fits elegantly
into the historical fabric of St Andrews. Overlooking the coastline and
the famous Old Course, the building has 4-storeys and despite being
contemporary, introduces several traditional features, including a pend for
allowing vehicular access to the adjacent library building, bay windows and
colonnade. It is an L shaped plan with entrance/ foyer areas and circulation
at the intersection of the wings.
Unlike traditional stone buildings which have thick load bearing façades with
timber floors spanning onto the external façade and internal load bearing
walls, this modern interpretation has a steel framed structure with concrete
floors and a thin sliver of dressed sandstone supported off the frame.
19
Twickenham South Stand, London, England
Client Rugby Football Union
Services Building services and fire
engineering, IT and audio visual
Architect Ward McHugh Associates
The development of Twickenham South Stand at 'The Home of Rugby'
was undertaken to increase to the level of service available on-site, such
as hospitality and hotel services. It now has facilities to rival any stadium in
the UK.
With design undertaken from Edinburgh, the South Stand incorporates
flexible conference facilities and provides a showroom for the performing arts,
a rugby museum and a RFU retail store. It also acts as the organisation's
administrative hub.
Cundall was commissioned on a multi-disciplinary basis to undertake the
design consultancy input, including the design of the M&E and information
technology services. Cundall was also responsible for the provision of a fire
strategy to the new site, and achieved significant cost savings through a
design managed approach to risk that was agreed with local building control
and fire authorities.
20
University of the West of Scotland Student Residencies, Ayr
Client University of the West of
Scotland
Services Building services engineering
Architect Lewis and Hickey
The new halls of residence development is part of the University of West
Scotland’s new Ayr Campus. The project was fast tracked and Cundall was
appointed to deliver the building services design for the 200-bed student
accommodation, from a standing start to having students in the residences
within 20 months.
The key challenges were achieving the BREEAM 'Very Good' rating aspiration
of the University whilst not losing sight of the budget, programme and low
maintenance brief set by the Estate’s Facilities Management (FM) team.
This was achieved by working in close cooperation with the Client’s
stakeholders including the FM team and the University’s energy conservation
specialists.
21
Burntisland Primary School, Fife
Client Amber Blue for Fife Council
Services Civil, structural and
geotechnical engineering, flood risk
assessment and transportation
Architect Fife Council Property
Service
This project has delivered a new-build three stream primary school with
community facilities including flexible accommodation for up to 651 primary
pupils and 160 nursery children provided over 2-storeys, an 11-a-side grass
pitch, a 7-a-side pitch and replacement children’s play park. The project is on
track to achieve a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.
The site required a net import of material to suit levels determined by fixed
boundary constraints and the varying existing levels on the site. Cundall
worked closely with the contractor to source suitable recycled fill material from
another of their sites, significantly reducing the embodied energy and cost
compared with the alternative import of quarried material.
A Transport Assessment was undertaken which considered access locations
and routes to and from the new site for all modes of transport - focussing on
Safer Routes to Schools. In addition the TA included junction capacity
assessment, road accident investigation, trip generation and proposed
pedestrian crossings.
