Dear Members and Friends, welcome to the
Axedale Golf Club March Newsletter
President's Report
Congratulations to all the members who were successful in
winning an event.
The Par 3 day last Sunday was successful and a good time was
had by all. Thanks to Daryl and Raye Fleay and Fred Kath for
setting up the course and nearest the pins. Also to Maureen
Connelly for doing all the paperwork and Sue Minnie for doing
the raffle. Also thanks to Blair Crouch for donating the prizes and
Geoff Kerr, Jan Walklate and Carmel Harrison for donating the
raffle prizes.
The rules night held on last Thursday was a very successful and
informative night. The challenge is trying to remember all the
items and rules that were discussed. Thanks to the Vic Golf
representative, David Blake whose knowledge was impeccable.
Also, thanks to Len Rodda for his invaluable organization and
thanks to the members who undertook the catering.
The Men’s Thursday competition now commences at 11.30am for
12noon start, but if the temperature exceeds 38c the “Heat
Policy” will be invoked and commencement time will be 7.30am
for 8am hit off.
The presentation of the course is very good. This contributes to
the number of people who are currently playing the course,
whether they are members or green fee players, Thanks to the
staff, volunteers and greens committee for their input.
A quote:
If you call on God to improve the results of a shot while it is still
in motion, you are using “an outside agency” and therefore
subject to appropriate penalties under the rules of golf.

Welcome to Our New Members
Welcome back to Mark Chapman who is re-joining.
Welcome to our two new ladies from Trish’s clinics –
Janelle Wilson & Luisa Lethlean.
Captain's Report
March is certainly ‘moving day’ in regards to our year getting
well into gear. We have had a Par 3 Day, Open Day, Autumn
Tournament, Abbotts Supply day and the commencement of the
Men’s Pennant season.
March Monthly Medal: Winner: Andy Watson
Gross 77 / 18 / 59 nett won the monthly medal.
WOW!!
Our Vice-Prez had a day out on Saturday (4th March) with a 77 off
the stick, meaning with his 18 handicap (which should come
crashing down now) he had the wonder nett score of 59, breaking
that magical 60 barrier. Congrats to you Andy what a great effort.
Captain’s Trophy:
The Captain’s Trophy day we had a great turn of 90 men vie for
front position, standing them in good sted for the eventual prize.
Currently leading the pack is John Harrison with an impressive
43, from Darren Hocking 41. Then the group of Jim Long, Phil
Brooks, David Lubke, Brian Fry in equal third on 39 points. A
further 7 golfers are on 38, so come April 22 (second and final
round) there will be some exciting golf to be played.
Good luck one and all.
Vic Golf Rules Committee visit:
Following the first Thursday arvo round for 2017 we had
Representatives from Vic Golf’s Rules Committee as guests of
the Axedale Golf Club and what a great night was had.
We enjoyed an early BBQ tea (thanks to all the Ladies and Fred)
before getting into the nitty gritty of asking the tough question.
A big thanks to Len Rodda who co-ordinated the night and was
the M.C. for the night.
One of the ruling that further clarification was required was in
regards to the marking of cards – and putting them in the system.
It is suggested that both player and marker put each other’s card
into the computer system together, reducing the risk of a
disqualification due to errors on the card.
Tree branches removal:
A team of volunteers toiled hard in cutting up and loading wood
from the various large tree branches cut down (on the 7th,
10th and 17th fairways.
The removal of the overhanging branches certainly has made a
difference in how you will tackle these holes. Check out the size
of the bonfire (& keep your diary clear for the ‘Xmas in July’
bonfire night) to see how much had to been cleaned up.
At least after all their hard work the volunteers are going to ‘get
their own back on those damn trees’, when they gleefully burn
the wood in their heaters in a couple of winters time.
Axedale Golf Club’s 2017 Men’s Pennant Teams:
Thanks to all those who have nominated to represent AGC in this
year’s Men’s Pennant competition. Last year we were able to
qualify 4 of our 6 teams into the final and got to take the
‘chocolates home’ with two of the teams. This year again our
teams are looking strong and it would be great – once again – to
have good representation come the Finals, which are being
played at Royal Axedale this year.
Round 1. is the 26th March, and here are the guys that will be
‘champing at the bit to get out there for our club.

Captain’s Office Volunteers: Vice-Captain Aaron Fredericks is
currently developing the quarterly Captain’s Office Roster. If you
can help out in the office (training & shadowing will be provided
in any aspects), either an hour or so before the round or the same
after a round, that would be great. There are Four main roles,
Entry
– that involves setting up the comp on the computer and entering
players as they come in to register.
Send Out
– Taking the ‘comp fees’ from members entering and in getting
the player’s cards off the printer, organizing the cards into
groups to then be sent out at 12noon.
Results
– taking the results of players having inputted their rounds in the
computer system and inputting the results onto a templated form
for the Captain to then read out at Presentations. Assist with
collating the various prize winners (i.e. N.T.P. Ball Winners &
Vouchers) and finalising the competition results with Golflink and
the Bendigo Addy
Give Aaron an email ([email protected])
or me a ring (0409404008), letting us know what suits you and
any Saturdays you are available. You will get a ‘gig’ roughly every
4 – 6 weeks and would greatly take off the workload of a few.

30. With the finals being played at Axedale on May 7th.

Lady President's Report
It has been an extremely busy time both on and off the
course for the Axedale Ladies. We appreciated the time our
members generously gave to supporting events such as the
Veterans Day where we catered for 120 visitors and the Rules
Evening where salads were prepared for over 60 participants.
It was great to see 29 ladies in attendance at the Rules
Evening including many of our newer members and we all
learnt a lot from the discussion. It just proved what a
complex game we play. Some ladies from Mitiamo and
Belvoir also joined us for the session.
Despite all the action in the kitchen, we do manage to play a
lot of golf and as we approach the end of the Summer we can
look back at some great games of golf played in perfect
conditions throughout the season.
Trish Shanahan’s series of Clinics for Beginners culminated
in the ‘Anything Goes Ambrose’ on Friday, March 3rd and
was a great success with 26 members and beginners sharing
fun, friendship and lunch at the Axedale Tavern to finish off
the day. Our membership is growing due to these inclusive
events with two ladies joining after the event.
The Par 3 Day on March 5th was another example of Axedale
Club members enjoying golf, fellowship and lots of fun in the
Par 3 course layout. This day, with a footy theme, was run by
our Social Committee. Sponsorship and support from club
members and friends ensured the day was a success with 39
players participating.
The Autumn Tournament will be held at Axedale between
March 15th – 18th and again, our lady members will be
supporting the club by playing in the event, providing
delicious slices and helping in the kitchen and in
administrative roles on all the days. Thank you in anticipation
to everyone involved.

1992 with a starring role in the romantic comedy series As Time Goes By. My film

Lady Captain's Report
Wednesday numbers have been down, probably due to the hot
weather, but Friday and Saturday numbers have been good.
March Wednesday Monthly Medalist was myself with a 84-12-72.
Saturday Monthly Medalist was Jeanette Comer with 96-23-73.
On Friday 3rd March we had an ‘’Anything Goes Ambrose” with 26
ladies playing. It was a wonderful social day with lunch at the
Axedale Tavern afterwards. Two ladies who played in this event
have taken up membership. Thank you to Trish Shanahan for
organizing this popular day. “Anything Goes “ means exactly
that! Very ironic after the Rules night the previous evening!
The Rules Information Night was a great success with many
positive comments from the ladies who attended. Thank you to
our caterer’s and to Len and Aaron for organizing the night.
We have 2 teams entered in the Ladies District Pennant with
some new members experiencing match play for the first time.
Good Golfing

What’s Happening Around Your Course
March 2017
Glen along with his team and our fantastic volunteer base have
been hard at work getting the course into tip top condition before
our Autumn Tournament and we certainly hope our members and
many visitors appreciate the hard work everyone has put in.
Many areas of the course have been sprayed with Iron Plus and
we have applied more Gibberellic Acid to fairways on holes 11-15
which will promote rapid growth.
We have the new bunkers in play now, right at a perfect time and
with the Autumn Tournament and Pennant fast approaching it will
provide a new look to holes 5 and 8 for our visitors.
Our new pumping system is up and running and performing well.
We extended irrigation on the 17th hole and the Santa Ana sprigs
have taken very well. Our water usage so far this season is at
47mg from the river and we also received 22ml of rainfall in
February.
Tree trimming has taken place on holes 7,10 & 17 and there is
more in the pipeline here which will be tackled at a date that is yet
to be confirmed.
With more work and maintenance planned around the course be
sure to continue to help out with the small things like repairing
divots and pitch marks.
