Correspondence Request Item 8 From: Sac Durham [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, September 06, 2016 1:54 PM To: clerks Subject: Proclamation Request for "November is Woman Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month Dear Sir or Madam, Please find attached our formal request for a repeat proclamation for the month of November, 2016. You will note that the request is virtually identical to that of last year, with the exception that we are following up on a recommended change of venue from Adelaide House at 33 McGrigor St. Oshawa, to EITHER a designated tree in Memorial Square or City Hall, which we would request that the City of Oshawa arrange for purple lights for the month of November. Please note, this is in accordance with the Durham Region Police Services shining purple lights at all their locations. Please be aware that similar requests are being made of all municipalities in Durham Region, however Oshawa leads the way based on 2015 participation. Thanks for your Consideration. Your input is valued. This month provides an excellent opportunity for our City to demonstrate its support in ending violence against women and to support the numerous victims who are among us. Moreover, it is a wonderful opportunity to educate the public on the seriousness of violence against women in all its forms and the prevalence of this epidemic in our lives. The Social Action Committee of Durham (SAC) would be honoured if you would prepare and share an official proclamation to recognize November as Woman Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month. Your proclamation would lend official recognition to the important work of educating the public, as well as emphasize your personal commitment to ending these offenses against women, as per 2015, File F-4210. November 2016, marks the third year that the SAC, has joined with the London Abuse Woman’s Centre to Shine the Light on Woman Abuse. The goal of the Shine the Light campaign, is to show abused women and their children that we support them in their quest to live a life free from violence and abuse; and to raise the profile of resources in the community that are available to help support abused women through their journey. We hope to, once again, turn the Region purple during the month of November. Purple is a symbol of courage, survival and honour, and has come to symbolize the fight to end woman abuse. The SAC seeks to host a formal purple Lighting ceremony on Tuesday November 1, 2016 at 6 PM. Our preference is that the City of Oshawa designate and provide lighting for either a tree in Memorial Square or the Oshawa City Hall as discussed last year. If this is not possible, we will regroup at Adelaide House. We hope that you will attend this special event to present your proclamation. If you are unable to attend, we ask that you or your official representative read the proclamation to our supporters. If you, or your staff, have any questions concerning this request, the sample proclamation, or Woman Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, please call me at 905-449-0501. We will follow-up with your office regarding this request within the next few days. We appreciate your support of Woman Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month and the elimination of violence against women. Thank you for consideration on this special request. I'm not sure whether the info is loaded yet on the Shine the Light site, but if it is done, Kim needs the link. This is a rush as the council meeting where the Proclamation is being submitted is Thursday and Kim is trying to prepare a lighting estimate at the same time. Also, as soon as we get the info about where to get purple plexiglass for the spotlights (assuming the location doesn't have colour programming), Kim will need that too. While you check with Fabienne in London, I'll talk to DRPS. Thanks! I'm assuming installation would require a wire holder).
