Dr. Satheesh Elangovan Receives a
Two-Year Exploratory (R21) NIH Grant
Dr. Satheesh Elangovan, Department of Periodontics, has received a two-year NIH grant. The award
amount is projected to be $406,285 and will be used
for his research, “A Novel RNA-Based Biomaterial for
Bone Regeneration.” Results from this study will provide critical information on the feasibility and effectiveness of cmRNA-based therapeutics for bone regeneration. New knowledge gained from the research will likely have implications in developing future bio-inspired
materials for tissue engineering applications.
Co-investigators on Dr. Elangovan’s research project include
Dr. Liu Hong, Dows Research; Dr. Deborah Dawson, director of the
Biostatistics Unit; and Dr. Aliasger Salem, College of Pharmacy. Drs.
Georgia K. Johnson, Department of Periodontics; Clark M. Stanford,
University of Illinois, Chicago); and Michael Kormann (University of
Tübingen, Germany) are consultants on this project.

College of Dentistry Publishes Second Highest
Number of Articles in JDE for 2014
The College of Dentistry was second in the number of 2014 primary author publications by faculty/staff
in the Journal of Dental Education (JDE) for 2014. The
top schools included the University of Michigan (8), University of Iowa (7), University of British Columbia (6),
and Tufts University, University of Missouri-Kansas City,
and University of North Carolina (4 each).
In addition to the seven faculty/staff publications,
fourth-year dental student Nicole Major was also a primary author on
a 2014 JDE article. Her co-authors included her mentor, Dr. Michelle
McQuistan, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, and
Dr. Fang Qian, Biostatistics Unit.
Dr. Veersathpurush Allareddy, Department of Orthodontics,
was a co-author on a 2014 JDE article authored by a Harvard University faculty, Dr. R.P. Nalliah.
“Besides being excited and proud of our educational programs,
we think it is important to submit to peer review,” said Dean David
Johnsen. “JDE does a great job of expediting substantive reviews.
More to come in 2015!”

Drs. Robert Franciscus and Jeffery Murray Elected as Fellows
of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
Dr. Robert Franciscus, UI Department of Anthropology, with a secondary appointment in the College of Dentistry, and Dr. Jeffrey Murray, UI College of Medicine,
with a joint-appointment in the College of Dentistry, have been elected as 2014 Fellows
Dr. Franciscus of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Drs. Murray and
Franciscus are being honored for their contributions to innovation, education, and scientific leadership.
Dr. Murray’s research focuses on identifying genetic and environmental causes
of premature birth and birth defects such as cleft lip and palate.
The research of Dr. Franciscus focuses on facial downsizing in modern humans as a result of “self-domestication” (decreased aggression and increased social tolerance).
The AAAS organization is the largest scientific organization; it publishes the journal
Science.
