Dr. Satheesh Elangovan Receives a Two-Year Exploratory (R21) NIH Grant Dr. Satheesh Elangovan, Department of Periodontics, has received a two-year NIH grant. The award amount is projected to be $406,285 and will be used for his research, “A Novel RNA-Based Biomaterial for Bone Regeneration.” Results from this study will provide critical information on the feasibility and effectiveness of cmRNA-based therapeutics for bone regeneration. New knowledge gained from the research will likely have implications in developing future bio-inspired materials for tissue engineering applications. Co-investigators on Dr. Elangovan’s research project include Dr. Liu Hong, Dows Research; Dr. Deborah Dawson, director of the Biostatistics Unit; and Dr. Aliasger Salem, College of Pharmacy. Drs. Georgia K. Johnson, Department of Periodontics; Clark M. Stanford, University of Illinois, Chicago); and Michael Kormann (University of Tübingen, Germany) are consultants on this project. The top schools included the University of Michigan (8), University of Iowa (7), University of British Columbia (6), and Tufts University, University of Missouri-Kansas City, and University of North Carolina (4 each). In addition to the seven faculty/staff publications, fourth-year dental student Nicole Major was also a primary author on a 2014 JDE article. Her co-authors included her mentor, Dr. Michelle McQuistan, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, and Dr. Fang Qian, Biostatistics Unit. Dr. Veersathpurush Allareddy, Department of Orthodontics, was a co-author on a 2014 JDE article authored by a Harvard University faculty, Dr. R.P. Nalliah. “Besides being excited and proud of our educational programs, we think it is important to submit to peer review,” said Dean David Johnsen. “JDE does a great job of expediting substantive reviews. Robert Franciscus and Jeffery Murray Elected as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Dr. Robert Franciscus, UI Department of Anthropology, with a secondary appointment in the College of Dentistry, and Dr. Jeffrey Murray, UI College of Medicine, with a joint-appointment in the College of Dentistry, have been elected as 2014 Fellows Dr. Franciscus of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Drs. Murray and Franciscus are being honored for their contributions to innovation, education, and scientific leadership. Dr. Murray’s research focuses on identifying genetic and environmental causes of premature birth and birth defects such as cleft lip and palate. The research of Dr. Franciscus focuses on facial downsizing in modern humans as a result of “self-domestication” (decreased aggression and increased social tolerance). The AAAS organization is the largest scientific organization; it publishes the journal Science.
