Friern Barnet School Newsletter
‘Enjoy and Excel’
MAY 2016
Introduction
Welcome to the May newsletter where, once again, I can happily extol the virtues of the school. We have
recently had two great events that have been inspirational and uplifting. The first was the Key Stage 4
prize giving which is our annual celebration of achievement and progress across years 10 and 11. This
year our speaker was Chris Preddie OBE who has a great story to tell of how he overcame many barriers
on his journey from a north London estate to being honoured by the Queen for his outstanding youth
work. It was a great way to celebrate the achievements of the Year 11 students who are almost at the
end of their time here as well as to inspire the Year 10 students as they get ready to move up to the final
year.
We have also hosted a university fair for the first time. We were visited by a wide range of universities
including the London School of Economics, Oxford University and Cambridge University. The
representatives from each university explained entrance requirements and tried to entice our students
with a fascinating range of courses and career paths. Students from years 9, 10 and 11 took part. I have
to give particular thanks to Mrs Myer, our innovative and tireless Careers Officer, for organising this. She
has been working with students from Year 7 upwards on careers and personal development this year
and the work she does is outstanding. All students get high quality and impartial guidance here which
allows them to make informed choices about their futures which suit their needs and aspirations.

Medical Appointments in School Term Time
Following DfE Attendance Guidelines: ‘missing registration for a medical or dental appointment is
counted as an authorised absence’.
At FBS we encourage parents to make appointments out of school hours and during school holidays.
Where this is not possible, the pupil should only be out of school for the minimum amount of time
necessary for the appointment. We expect students to attend school in the morning if they have an
afternoon appointment and return to school if they have a morning appointment.
Please try to organise doctor and dentist appointments out of school hours

University Fair
On Wednesday 18 May, FBS held a very successful University Fair for students in Years 9, 10 and 11.
Sixteen universities and a representative from whatuni.com attended.
Pupils had the chance to sit down with the universities and talk face to face with their representative.
Here’s what one pupil said “I’m definitely going to university now!” and “I didn’t know which university
to talk to but just sat down at yours and today is my lucky day I love the sound of your uni”
Here is some feedback from the Universities that attended:
“Thank you for your e-mail, I’m glad your students had a productive day. Our student ambassador has
just arrived back and said the stand was really popular, which is great to hear.”
“It was a lovely event from our perspective too. Thank you for organising and inviting us. The format was
very good too - it was great to have structured slots with the students to work past the 'grab a
prospectus and run mentality' that often happens when students are unsure/overwhelmed.”
“Many thanks for inviting us to Friern Barnet School this morning, it was lovely to speak to so many
students with really interesting ideas about their future plans!”
I also received feedback from the ambassador who was there; She said “It was wonderful and was the
favourite HE fair she has worked on so far! Please pass that on to the students as well.”
If you would like to know more about possible university courses, you can find the universities that came
to FBS here, with a list of their courses.

Young Volunteers in Barnet Libraries Summer Reading Challenge 2016
Every year Barnet Libraries runs the Summer Reading Challenge. This is a national scheme to
encourage children (usually 4 to 11 year olds), to read for pleasure during their summer holidays.
The challenge for them is to read just six books over the summer. There is a different theme each
year and this year we are celebrating 100 years of Roald Dahl with The Big Friendly Read.
Children visit the library to tell us about what they have read and to collect their free stickers and
prizes. When they have read six books, we give them a special award and a certificate for
completing the challenge.
The summer reading challenge is always very popular in Barnet (last year we had over 5,000
children take part) and we would like to give you the chance to share in this great scheme. It’s fun
and rewarding listening to young children and experiencing their enjoyment of reading.
Here is what we want you to do:
 encourage children to join the ‘The Big Friendly Read’
 help with admin, e.g. filing membership cards
 encourage children to borrow books and talk to them about what they like to read
 help to shelf tidy in the children’s library
 give out the stickers and prizes
 encourage them to complete the challenge, so they can get their gold medals!
 help staff with arts and crafts events
 help with displays.
You must be aged 14 – 18. You will be asked to volunteer for 2 hours per session for 4 sessions (8
hours in total). This will usually be either 10am – 12 noon or 2pm – 4pm Monday – Saturday by
arrangement with the library concerned. We are very flexible and can work round any holidays
you might be taking in the summer.
What we will do for you
 We will provide you with training before the challenge starts.
 We will keep a record of the hours you volunteer for us.
 We will make sure you are happy with your tasks and are able to carry them
out for us.
 There will be recognition for the volunteering you have done.
 If you are working towards a Duke of Edinburgh award, this volunteering opportunity may
count towards the hours you are required to do.
 We can give you a reference.
Remember!
A member of staff will always be there to help you.
Person Specification: We are looking for people who are:
1. Calm when things are busy, but able to find things to do when it’s quiet.
2. Happy to talk to young children and their parents.
3. Enthusiastic about reading
4. Committed to helping libraries and our customers.
