Unit 4 Poetry Assessment Literary devices are important to include in a free verse poem. Similes and metaphors are devices that are very important. These two devices are quite similar because they have the same job which is comparing between two things. It is important to have similes and metaphors in a free verse poem because they help the reader to see the image the words suggest and understand more about what the author is trying to convey. Also, personification is an important device to include in a poem. Personification is a device that gives human characteristics to an inanimate object. It could get the reader's attention because it is an another good way to describe something that is inanimate and the readers would be able to visualise easier. Literary devices are important because they often help the reader to image words and develop meaning of the poem. The rules of free verse allow the writer to be self expressive in many ways. In the free verse poem, there are no specific rhyme so the writer do not have to be worry about the last word. Moreover, there are no specific rhythm for the writer to create patterns in the poem. These rules allow the writer to be self expressive because the writer do not have to be worry about anything thing else, but express themselves. Unit 4 Poetry : Analysis of a Poem Disappointments by Vivian Gilbert Zabel Every life has a room where memories are stored: A box of special occasions here, Shelves of shared laughter t here. But back in the shadows Lurks a trunk locked tight, Not to be opened and searched. There hide disappointments Which darken every heart. This is a very short poem, it has only one stanza without any rhythm and a very little of rhyme which are the words that I have highlighted. The theme of the poem is people’s life and memories. Imagery also has been used in the poem because the writer described our live as a room by using metaphors. For example, “Every life has a room where memories are stored: A box of special occasions here, shelves of shared laughter there”. The words in the poem mean what they mean, no connotation. This poem has short lines and at the beginning of each lines, it started with capital letters. However, there is no reputation in the poem. The poem says that our life is not perfect, there could be laughter and happiness, but there could also be disappointments and sadness, too. Unit 4 Poetry : Original Poem The Moon and A Million Stars The Sun goes down And the moon raises up It shines bright like a new penny. I look up at the sky and see A million stars in the waves of darkness Suddenly, I find myself flying in the sky I touch the stars, And I play with the moon. I open my eyes, I lie down on my back See the grandly moon smiling at me. My research influenced the creation of this poem because I found out that in the free verse poem, there should have similes and metaphors in it. Therefore, I decided to use similes and metaphors as a way to describe that moon and stars because it is easier for the reader to visualise. For example, “It shines bright like a new penny.” and “A million stars in the waves of darkness”. Bibliography Cteristics, Hara. CHARACTERISTICS OF (n.d.): n. pag. Read Write Think. Web. 26 May 2016.
