Pedon Description Report - Metric Units

S05-RI-009-001A / RI009-2005-001A-NP
Washover fan slope; Ninigret Pond, Charlestown, RI
The Nagunt series consists of very deep, subaqueous soils on washover
fan flats and washover fan slopes in coastal lagoons. Nagunt soils are
formed in fine sandy to sandy marine deposits that are deposited as a
result of washover events. Buried surface horizons and stratification
are often identified. Slope ranges from 0 to 6 percent.
Pedon Description:
A1--0 to 14 centimeters; black (5Y 2.5/1) interior and olive gray (5Y
4/2) oxidized, fine sand; massive; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic;
nonfluid; 1 percent flat subangular shell fragments; negative reaction to
alpha-alpha' dipyridyl; Macro algea on surface, algal filaments and
reed fragments throughout; clear; Lab sample # 06N02244.
C1--14 to 36 centimeters; very dark gray (5Y 3/1) interior, fine sand;
massive; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; nonfluid; 2 percent flat
subrounded less than 4-millimeter shell fragments; negative reaction to
alpha-alpha' dipyridyl; Complete Quahog (Venus mercenaria) shell 4
cm in diameter. Common very fine algal filaments throughout; gradual;
Lab sample # 06N02245.
C2--36 to 73 centimeters; dark gray (5Y 4/1) interior, loamy fine sand;
massive; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; nonfluid; 2 percent very
coarse faint cylindrical gray (5Y 5/1), moist, iron depletions with clear
boundaries in matrix; negative reaction to alpha-alpha' dipyridyl; Few
very fine algae filaments. Redox depletion color 5Y 5/1, 3 cm wide.;
clear; Lab sample # 06N02246.
C4--73 to 109 centimeters; dark gray (5Y 4/1) interior, fine sand;
massive; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; nonfluid; 2 percent flat
angular shell fragments; negative reaction to alpha-alpha' dipyridyl; 5
cm Oyster shell, slightly weathered. Few very fine algal filaments.
abrupt; Lab sample # 06N02247.

Cg1--109 to 121 centimeters; gray (5Y 5/1) interior, fine sand; massive; very friable,
nonsticky, nonplastic; nonfluid; negative reaction to alpha-alpha' dipyridyl; abrupt; Lab
sample # 06N02248.
2Ab1--121 to 155 centimeters; very dark gray (5Y 3/1) interior, fine sandy loam;
massive; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; nonfluid; 1 percent flat subangular shell
fragments; Few very fine algal filaments, slight H2S odor.; clear; Lab sample #
06N02249.
2Ab2--155 to 165 centimeters; very dark gray (5Y 3/1) interior, silt loam; very friable,
slightly sticky, nonplastic; slightly fluid; 1 percent flat subangular shell fragments;
negative reaction to alpha-alpha' dipyridyl; Horizon is interpreted as lagoon bottom
organic silts (MB), few very fine algal filaments, slight H2S odor. Designation changed
to 2Ab2 due to change in overlying horizon; Lab sample # 06N02250.
