Manychildrenlearnedtoread,butmosthouseholdsownedonlytheBibleandotherreligiousworks— includingafewthatdescribedevilspiritsandwitchcraftingreatdetail.Therewereafewbookswrittenfor children,buttheseoftenwarnedagainstbadbehavioranddescribedthepunishmentthatchildrenwould sufferforsinfulacts. SuchwastheworldofAbigailWilliamsandBettyParrisduringthelong,darkwinterof1692.Therewaslittle tofeedtheirimaginationthatdidnotwarnofsinandeternalpunishment.Itisnowonderthattheyounggirls 6 weresocaptivatedbyTituba’smagicalstoriesandfortune-tellinggames.Theseactivitieswerestrictly forbidden,whichmusthavefilledthemwithfearandguilt.Thismayhavebeenonereasonfortheirhysterical behavior.Andatatimewhenyounggirlswereforbiddentoactoutorexpressthemselves,itiseasytosee whytheyweresoenrapturedbytheattentiontheyreceivedwhentheybecame“bewitched.” Ofcourse,therewereprobablymanyfactorsbehindthegirls’actions.Butwhatismoresurprisingthanthe accusationsfromtheseimaginativeyounggirlsisthereactionfromthecommunity.Thegirlsmayhave sparkedthewitchhunt,butitwastheadultswhosetthewheelsintomotion.
