WELCOME TO JEFFERSON JUNIOR HIGH. We are here to help guide and support you through your junior high
experience and encourage you to make the most of the opportunities available. In order to create a secure, positive

RESPECT for AUTHORITY
It is imperative that the teacher be in charge of the class. Anything less would lead to a poor academic opportunity for all.
Furthermore, every staff member will be treated with respect and dignity, just as the student will receive the respect of the
staff. Students are expected to conduct themselves appropriately by the time they have entered seventh grade. All staff
members have the authority and obligation to help maintain the rules and order of the school. A show of disrespect and
willful disobedience toward any staff member anywhere on campus or at school sponsored activities will not be tolerated.

Second time:
Overnight Suspension –parent conference required for student to return to school.
Third time:
1 day ISS (In-School Suspension)
Fourth time:
1 Full Day Suspension – parent conference required for student to return to school.
All after school detentions assigned must have a parent contact. In the event a parent cannot be reached because of incorrect
phone numbers or no answer, the student will be overnight suspended with a parent conference required for the students return
to school the next day.
ASSEMBLY and PERFORMANCE CONDUCT
Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of entertaining and informative assemblies and school
performances. These include assemblies during school and performances held in the evening. Appropriate behavior is expected
at all school events. This includes no booing, whistling, or inappropriate remarks. Students should be respectful and courteous
in all assemblies. Administration may conclude an assembly or program any time student behavior is not appropriate. For all
evening performances, students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian to attend.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Regular prompt attendance has a direct effect on what students learn. It is essential that all of our students attend every class
every day and that they are on time to those classes. Missing even a few minutes of class adds up to hours of missed
instruction and disrupts the learning of other students.
You can check your attendance through the Portal Login link on the Jefferson website (http://schools.graniteschools.org/
jeffersonjr) to make sure any absences have been excused.
The three types of school absences are as follows:
1) Excused Absences – Excused absence include the following: illness, medical emergencies, death of a family member
or close friend, or family activity or travel, consistent with district/school policy with a note or phone call from the
parent or guardian. A parent may excuse up to 7 full school days a year.
2) Unknown Absences – Unknown absences have not been excused and are considered truant until excused.
3) Truancy Absences – Truancy absences are absences that occur without school or parental approval. A teacher or
administration determines the consequences for a truancy absence.
Attendance Marks
The following marks are used on the attendance sheet:
2
(A) Unknown Absence
(C) Court
(D) Discipline (ISS)
(E) Excused by parent
(F) Funeral
(M) Medical (Doctor or Counselor)
(O) Correction made
(R) School Release (field trips, etc.)
(T) Tardy
(U) Unexcused Truancy
(V) Vacation
ATTENDANCE POLICY - ALL DAY ABSENCES
An all day absence should be phoned in to the school on the day of the absence by the parent before 9:30 A.M. The number
for the Counseling/Attendance Office is 385-646-5196. If no phone call is made, the student must provide the Attendance
Office with a written note upon his/her return to school. The note must be signed by the parent, have the date of the absence,
and state the reason for the absence. If a note is not provided, the absence will be considered unexcused. You have two weeks
from the day of the absence to bring an excuse note to the counseling center. After the two week period, the absence will
remain unexcused.
ATTENDANCE POLICY - CHECKING IN LATE
Students who arrive after the 7:50 A.M. tardy bell must check in at the Hall Sweep in the Commons Area. If a student arrives
after 8:00 A.M. they must check in at the Counseling Center. All students must have a WRITTEN excuse from their parent
when checking in late (even 1 minute) or they will be considered part of the Hall Sweep. NOTE: We do not accept excuses
over the phone for students who arrive late – they must have a written note.
The written excuse must contain the following:
• First and last name of student
• Date and Time checking in
• Parent Signature/Reason for being late
• Phone number where parent can be reached
Any student checking in without a note will be given unexcused absences for the periods they have missed. Students who
check in without a note have one day to bring a written note to excuse their late check in. Any student who misses a class or
classes and does not have a note from a parent or teacher will be considered as truant.
Truancy Consequences:
First truancy:

Sixth truancy:
Call home, 2 days OSS; parent must return with student.
ATTENDANCE POLICY - SCHOOL HOURS
School begins at 7:50 A.M. and ends at 2:45 P.M. (Monday – Thursday). School ends at 12:30 P.M. on Friday. Early
release days on Friday are designed to allow teachers to collaborate about curriculum and instruction.
• Students are not to be in the halls, at their lockers, or anywhere else in the building (outside the commons areas)
until the bell rings at 7:30 A.M., unless they are under the direct supervision of an adult school staff member.
Breakfast is served at 7:20 A.M.
• Students should be out of the building by 2:55 on Monday- Thursday and 12:40 on Fridays.
ATTENDANCE POLICY - STUDENT CHECK-OUT
For the safety of our students, parents will need to come IN to the Counseling Center and personally sign out their
students if they wish to release them early during the school day. A telephone call alone will not suffice. Students should be
released only to their parents or guardians. Parents: If you know you will be picking your child up early, you may notify the
Counseling Center that morning and we will try to have the student waiting for you in the office. The parent will still need to
come into the office to officially sign out the student.
ATTENDANCE POLICY - TARDY POLICY
All students have a responsibility to be on time to school and each class period. You have 5 minutes to get from class to class,
please use this time wisely to get to your next class prepared. Students are expected to be in the classroom when the tardy bell
rings. We will have HALL SWEEPS each period, including advisory. Teachers will be standing in the doorway and will shut
the door when the bell finishes ringing. Any student not in the classroom at this time will be required to go to the commons
area for an admit note. Teachers will not admit a student to class without an admittance or excused tardy note. (If a student has
a parent excuse for being tardy and they come in during a hall sweep, they may check in at the hall sweep or at the counseling
center.) Students will be given a clean slate each quarter.

BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS
All students should have self-discipline and make responsible choices. Over the years, Jefferson has established traditions of
courtesy, cooperation, friendliness, and an attitude of respect for people and property. Malapropos or disruptive behavior will
receive appropriate consequences.
Student behavior is expected to promote learning and display respect for students, staff, faculty, and administration. The
following behavioral standards are required. Those students choosing to disregard these standards also choose to accept
disciplinary action at the discretion of the appropriate school authorities.
• Arrive at school on time. Attend all classes on time everyday unless excused by school personnel.
• Follow classroom rules and the directions of all staff members at Jefferson Junior High.
• Respect the right of others to feel safe and secure at school. Verbal or physical threats to others are unacceptable.
• Fighting at school, on school grounds, at school activities, or to and from school is prohibited.
• Instigating and encouraging others to fight is contrary to the standards adopted at Jefferson Junior High and will not
be tolerated.
• Weapons of any kind are prohibited and will be reported to police. Look alike weapons are also prohibited and may
result in school/district sanctions.
• Lighters, matches, firecrackers, and other flammable materials are prohibited. Pepper spray or other “mace-type”
products are prohibited.
• Interfering with authorities attempting to enforce school rules or intervening in student conflicts is prohibited.
• Language will be free from vulgarity and obscenity and free from racial, ethnic, religious, and sexual slurs.
• Public displays of affections, hugging, kissing and inappropriate touching are not permitted at school or on school
grounds.
BICYCLES
The school will not be held responsible for damage or theft of bicycles. When students bring bicycles to school, they must be
secured appropriately to the bike rack. Students may not chain or secure bicycles to trees or other items. Students who secure
bicycles to areas other than bike racks will have the chain cut and their bicycles impounded.
BULLYING/HARASSMENT
Threats and rumors have no place at Jefferson; and every student has the right to attend school without being threatened or
bullied. Violators who engage in harassment or bullying behaviors are subject to disciplinary and/or legal actions. If a student
has a problem with another student, it should be reported to the office. If a student does not feel safe reporting directly to the
office, phone calls or e-mails are acceptable alternatives.
CELL PHONES & ELECTRONIC DEVICES
The Granite School District Board of Education has established that electronic communication devices such as cell phones and
music devices have the potential of disrupting the orderly operation of the school. Use of electronic devices in the hallways and
common areas during school hours are prohibited for any and all uses. Headsets for any of these devices are not to be worn or
displayed at anytime. Use of electronic devices for academic purposes in the classroom is under the discretion and supervision
of each individual teacher.
•

•
•
Cell phones and electronic devices MUST BE TURNED OFF during the school day and may only be used outside of
the school building before or after the regular school hours.
Cell phones and electronic devices MUST be stored out of sight. (i.e. locker, inside backpack.)
Cell phones and electronic devices that are used in violation of school rules will be confiscated with the following
disciplinary actions:
o First - Student can pick up device from office with a reminder and warning.

o Third - Parent/Guardian meeting with administration.
Jefferson Junior High and Granite School District accept no responsibility for the loss of or damage to any
communication device.

CLOSED CAMPUS
Jefferson Junior High is a closed campus. This means students are required to stay on the school campus from the time they
arrive at school until the dismissal bell rings; even if the first class has not started.
• Students are not to leave the campus for lunch. This will be considered a truancy.
• If you need to be excused during the school day, you must be signed out in person, by a parent or guardian in the
Counseling Center to receive a street pass.
• Students not enrolled at Jefferson Junior High will not be issued a visitor’s pass and are not allowed to be on campus
during the school day or at the end of school.
COUNSELING CENTER
Each student is assigned to a counselor in Grade 7 and remains the responsibility of that counselor through Grade 9.
Counselors assist students with registration, scheduling classes, social and personal problem-solving, individual and group
counseling, and career choices. Counselors may also arrange conferences with students, teachers and parents if requested.
They also conduct SEOP conferences with students and parents during the school year.
If you are having a problem at school, with classes or other students, the counselors stand ready to assist you. The counselors
will listen to your concerns, suggest options, and help you get back on track. If you need to see your counselor, fill out the
blue Counselor Appointment Form and you will be called to the Counseling Office as soon as possible.
DANCES - ELIGIBILITY AND RULES
All students, who are eligible, may attend school dances and activities. Eligibility includes: no suspensions (ISS of OSS) and
all ASD’s completed before the dance is held. In addition to the school rules, the following rules apply for all dances: students
must be considerate and courteous of other students; once students leave the dance, they may not return; dances are designated
for students enrolled at Jefferson Junior High only; you must have your student activity card to enter the dances or activities or
pay an admission fee (if you have lost your activity card, you may purchase a new card at the office for $5.00).

EMERGENCY SAFETY PROCEDURES
Emergency Safety Procedures include evacuation, earthquake, and hard or soft lockdown. Drills for these emergency
procedures will be practiced throughout the year. Students are expected to take all drills serious. Students misbehaving during
emergency drills will receive an office referral and appropriate discipline.
5
Evacuation - Each time the fire alarm sounds, everyone is required to evacuate the building as directed by teachers and
administrators. During the first weeks of school, teachers will go over the specifics of evacuating the building with students.
Falsely setting off the fire alarm is prohibited by law, as are bomb threats or other threats that may affect the safety of students
and staff. Violators will be subject to school disciplinary action as well as consequences from the County Fire Marshal, Salt
Lake County Sheriff’s Office or Granite Police Department and the judicial system.
Earthquake - Earthquakes occur so quickly that no announcement will likely be possible. Students should get under their desks
at the first indication that an earthquake is occurring. Students are to remain under their desks until given further instruction by
their teacher, administration, or other staff member.
Lockdown - If an emergency occurs where the safety of students is better ensured by remaining in the building, a safety
lockdown procedure will announced. In a Soft Lockdown all outside activities are immediately suspended. All activities within
the school will continue as normal while school grounds and entry into the school will be secured. In a Hard Lockdown all
students must be in a classroom and all classrooms will be immediately locked and secured. Students will remain in their
classroom with their teacher until notified by administration.

It is each student’s responsibility to be in class during class time. If an emergency arises, the student may be issued a hall pass.
The student is to report directly to the location indicated on the pass and then return promptly to the classroom. Students must
wear the orange hall pass vest properly so that the teacher name is visible. Students found in the halls or bathroom without
an official pass may be considered as truant.
LANGUAGE
THE USE OF FOUL OR ABUSIVE LANGUAGE IS NOT PERMITTED IN SCHOOL. Bad language shows a lack of
respect for self and others and detracts from our school pride. Students may be given an ASD or other consequences for the use
of foul language. When this language is directed at a staff member, the student may be suspended. Utah Law 53A-11-904
states: “Students who use foul, profane, vulgar, or abusive language may be suspended from school.”
LOCKERS
Every student will have their own locker. Lockers are the property of the school district and may be inspected/searched by
school authorities at anytime and without notice. If you have problems with your locker, please report them to the Main Office.
• Please use only the locker assigned to you. We will not open another student’s locker to get your items out if you
choose to put your belongings in a locker other than your own.
• Sharing lockers may result in forfeiture of locker privileges.
• DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR COMBINATION TO OTHERS!!
• At the end of the school year, students will be financially responsible for any mistreatment or damage to their locker.
• Be aware that skateboards do not fit in the lockers. They frequently cause damage if they are forced into lockers.
Students will be charged for that damage.
• Leave nothing of value in the lockers. There is no guarantee of locker security.
• The school is not responsible for items lost or stolen from the locker.
• The student is responsible to maintain the locker in a clean and orderly manner.
• Students will be charged $2.00 for a locker combination change.
LUNCH AND THE LUNCHROOM
Jefferson Junior High is on a computerized lunch system. Students may put money in their accounts on a daily, weekly, or
monthly basis. The computer keeps a running total of the balance. Students should put money in their accounts first thing in the
morning. No money will be entered after 10:00 A.M. Envelopes for cash are in the front office on the counter. If meals are
paid for by check, please put the student’s name and lunch number on the bottom of the check to ensure that the money is
credited to the right account. Students may also add pay for lunch on-line by going through the PayPams through the Lunch
Menu link on our home page http://schools.graniteschools.org/jeffersonjr and then clicking on the PayPams link.
Jefferson Junior High serves breakfast and lunch. Those students that receive free lunch also receive breakfast for free.
Students have one account for both breakfast and lunch. Students may bring a lunch or purchase one from the school. Based on
national recommendation and research for school aged children, energy drinks such as Rock Star, Red Bull, etc. are prohibited.

at all times. All food and drink must be consumed in the cafeteria pit (where the tables are). Food and drink purchases
from the machines must be taken to the pit area immediately before they are opened and consumed. Machines may be turned
off 5 minutes before the bell rings to dismiss lunch. Tables need to be left clean and all trash placed in the garbage cans. Noncompliance may result in directives to clean the cafeteria area, no access to vending machines, a closed A La Carte, and/or
other disciplinary measures. Lunch detentions may be assigned as a consequence for students by administration for a variety of
concerns. After the lunch room detention ticket is given, the student will have one day to complete the detention or will be
assigned an ASD. If the student breaks the rules during the detention time, one or more days of ASD may be assigned.
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
Students should walk on the sidewalks to and from school, not roadsides or medians. If no sidewalk is available, walk single
file as far to the side as possible.
• Major roads (i.e. 5600 West, 5400 South, and 6200 South) should be crossed at the crossing light located in front of
the school or at corners with traffic lights. Neighborhood streets should be crossed at crosswalks or street intersections
when marked crosswalks are not available.
• Please don’t horseplay, push or shove other students off the sidewalk into the streets.
• Traffic is heavy on 5600 West and students should use caution, crossing only at the crosswalk (located in front of the
school) with the crossing guards and crossing light.
PHONES – Using School Phones
If a student has an emergency, he/she needs to obtain a phone pass from a staff member in order to use the phone in the
counseling center. For individual student’s cell phone – please refer to the Cell Phone policy.
PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
Students may retain and self-administer medications subject to the following:
• Medication, prescription or non-prescriptions, shall be taken only as directed by prescription or manufacturer’s
directions.
• Medication, prescription or non-prescription, shall not be sold, shared, or otherwise given to others.
• A responsible adult must transport syringes (insulin pens excepted) to and from school, and they must be kept in a
locked cabinet or drawer in the office.
• Parents may also request that emergency set of medications such as epi-pens and inhalers be locked in the Counseling
Center Office.
REPORT CARDS/MID-TERM EVALUATIONS
Students receive an official report at the end of each quarter (every nine to ten weeks). A midterm report comes out in the
middle of the quarter. Parents are welcome to contact teachers with any questions regarding classroom performance. Parents
also have access to student’s grades, attendance and weekly progress online by accessing Gradebook through the Portal Login
link on the home page.
SAFE SCHOOL POLICY
Granite District’s Safe School Policy is enforced at Jefferson Junior High. It is important that everyone is safe at school. Acts of
criminal behavior that place any person in imminent danger are prohibited in all Granite District schools, on school grounds, at
school sponsored activities, when students are being transported in vehicles dispatched by the district, and when students are
traveling to and from school. Safe School Violations include, but are not limited to:
•
•
•
•
•
Serious gang activity.
Repeated patterns of aggression including fighting and bullying.
Possession of a weapon, either real or look alike.
Resorting, use/possession, or distributing any illegal or controlled substance such as drugs or alcohol (including
prescription medication except for the appropriate prescribed use as explained previously).
Sexual harassment including any verbal, written, or physical conduct of a sexual nature, which has the purpose or
effect of creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.
Students who violate the Safe School Policy subject themselves to school, district, and legal sanctions. Law enforcement
referrals will be made when appropriate. Students should also report if they have knowledge of weapons on school grounds
immediately to school administration. Weapons or any safe school violation may be reported on the Safety Hotline at
801-481-7199. Callers remain anonymous.
SCHEDULE CHANGE POLICY
Just because things are not going well in a particular class does not mean it is time to bail out. However, the school recognizes
that unusual circumstances may, at times, require a schedule change. Five dollars will be charged for any class change that
does not qualify in the following categories - (A) an incomplete schedule or (B) an inappropriate placement has been made.
Any changes must be requested by a parent and approved by a counselor or administrator. Optional schedule change requests
on the part of students, parents or teachers will be considered on a space available basis during the first week of school or
7
within one week prior to the beginning of each new quarter, by following these steps:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Parent/guardian and teacher consultation by phone or in person
Student obtains schedule change form in counseling office before or after school or between classes.
Student obtains teacher signatures required by the schedule change form.
Parent/Guardian signature must be obtained by the student indicating agreement with the proposed changes.
Completed form returned to Counseling Center
If space is available and other considerations are met, a new schedule will be printed and given to the student. Only then, may
the student attend new classes.
SKATEBOARDS, SCOOTERS, and ROLLER BLADES
Skateboards, scooters, and roller blades may not be ridden on school grounds. Lockers are not large enough to hold these items
and they should be left at home. Any of these items used inside school or on school grounds will be confiscated and parents
will have to report to the school to collect them during our regular office hours.
VISITORS
Parents and guardians are invited and encouraged to visit Jefferson Jr. High; however, we do not allow other visitors, family
members, or friends to attend classes with our students. It is helpful for parents to make an appointment prior to visiting.
Visitors are required to report to the front office and obtain a visitor’s pass. Students who attend other schools are not to
be on school grounds before, during, or after the regular school day. Students who violate this policy may receive a trespassing
ticket from the Salt Lake County Sheriff Office.
CARE CARDS REWARD PROGRAM
Students who exhibit good citizenship, academics, and real-life skills will be rewarded with CARE Cards for their efforts.
CARE Cards can be used to buy supplies, games, treats, etc. at the CARE Card store during their lunchtime. As students use
these cards at the store they will be eligible for weekly drawings and for large quarterly activities. CARE Cards are given for
good grades on report cards by Advisory teachers and randomly by all school staff for students following these school wide
expectations.
ADMINISTRATIVE PRIVILEGE
The administration retains the right, privilege, and obligation to issue disciplinary consequences not specifically stated herein
and to alter any penalties as they consider necessary in order to maintain an environment conducive to learning and safety.
Furthermore, the administration reserves the right to alter any provision in this planner which they deem to be in the best
interest of the educational process or in the interest of student and staff safety.
