READ WITH A WANDERER COMMUNITY PARTNER READ WITH A WANDERER The Western Sydney Wanderers have a strong philosophy of giving back to their community. 1. To write a story book and be selected by your school as the “Read with a Wanderer” entry The AIM of this initiative is to work together with schools, teachers and young people to improve literacy levels across Western Sydney, and anywhere else that this competition takes us. 2. To make the “Wanderers All Star Literacy Team of the Year” What is the “Read with a Wanderer” Literacy Program? The “Read with a Wanderer” literacy program is a joint partnership between The Western Sydney Wanderers, University of Western Sydney and AusSIP (The Australian Schools Industry Partnership). COMMUNITY PARTNER READ WITH A WANDERER 11 books will be selected, one representing every position on the field. We invite your school to take the challenge to improve Literacy, not only in your school, but across the wider community. We want to see students writing stories for other children, so the wider community can benefit in raising literacy levels. Together, we have developed an opportunity for the Wanderer’s players to read storybooks provided to them by students, to encourage reading in the community by showcasing positive role models. These videos will be available for all schools across Western Sydney. We also want everyone to experience the enjoyment in reading by exploring books as an individual that can increase in difficulty over time in a non threatening environment. The Challenge for school students The ‘Read with a Wanderer’ program will see the development of an online library that will continue to 2 grow each year. This process will allow the recordings of the “winning stories” to be stored online so they can be accessed by anyone at anytime therefore improving exposure to literacy for Western Sydney and beyond. For 11 lucky entrants the Wanderers and UWS will select the: The competition will provide the Wanderers the opportunity to celebrate the great writing talent in the community and leverage off the Wanderers players who are role models for our students through their sporting achievements, to be seen actively reading and enjoying the collection of stories that will grow in numbers and diversity year by year. This TEAM will have their storybook: The purpose is to improve writing skills, reading skills, and to provide opportunity for developing creativity in the students. COMMUNITY PARTNER READ WITH A WANDERER All winning books entered by their school each year will receive a “Wanderers Literacy Award” for contributing to the improvement of literacy across Western Sydney. Your book will then automatically go into the judging for the Wanderers All Star Literacy Team of the Year.
