Roe Green Infant School Newsletter Summer Term-2017 Being Healthy PE lessons will take place outside now, weather permitting. Sport’s Day will be held on 20th June 2017. Please make sure your child has plimsolls (that fit) and PE kit in school. Too many children are missing out in this important area of the curriculum because they do not have their PE kit in school. Also please ensure that stud earrings are worn and not hooped earrings. We always ensure that our school and its grounds are tidy and welcoming for our community, things such as dropping rubbish and spitting are not allowed on the school premises. Staying Safe If the weather is unsettled, please make sure your child brings a coat to school. During the good weather, children will need to bring in sun hats. Children can either wear their black school shoes (Velcro attachments are more suitable than lace ups for our children) or they can wear a sensible closed toe summer sandal. We are concerned about children wearing open toed sandals as accidents can so easily occur. Some parents are parking on the zig zag lines or in front of the school gates at drop off and collection time. These areas must be kept free for the safety of children and for emergency access. Please keep these areas clear at all times, even if it does mean parking a couple of minutes walk from school. Please be considerate to the school’s neighbours and do not park across their drives when dropping off and picking up your children. Please make sure that your children aren’t playing on the equipment or with the fountain at the beginning and end of the school day. Enjoying and Achieving The national phonics check for Year 1 and for some of the children in Year 2 will take place in the week beginning 12th June. A Parents’ meeting for Year 1 children to explain what happens during the check took place earlier this half term. Last term a number of events took place. Maths week took place from 16th – 21st January. During Maths week children participated in a wide variety of games and activities that were based around numbers, problem solving, turn taking, winning and losing. Parents were invited into classrooms to play alongside their children and friends. It was wonderful to see so many parents take part. Classes designed and made their own games and were then presented at the whole school assembly on Friday. Computing week took place from 6th – 10th February. During computing week KS1/KS2 explored a variety of different technology. Each year group made QR code key rings and bookmarks, as well as controlling electronic devices using algorithms and programming devices. English Week took place from 27th February – 3rd March. This year’s English Week was based on Story Telling. The week started with a visit to the school by Chip Colquhoun form “Snail Tales”, a company which highlights and develops the importance of storytelling in education. This “Storytelling Day” started with a whole school assembly and then classes had workshops in which they created their own ideas for telling stories. English Week concluded with a World Book Day celebration where the children came to school dressed up as one of their favourite book characters. Book prizes were awarded to the best costumes from each class. Inclusion week took place from 13th – 17th March. During Inclusion Week, the children made kites which involved using key scientific and DT skills. They tested their kite designs out on the field and had a fantastic time. The parents were invited to this event and afterwards they enjoyed snacks from the World Food Cafe. Class assemblies for Reception will be held this term. Class assemblies will be on a Friday in the Infant hall, starting at 9.10am. 16th June Red Robins 30th June Yellow Canaries The following class assemblies have taken place since our last newsletter: Eagle class Toys from the Past Kestrel class K-News Hawk class Red Nose Day Falcon class Green Parrots Blue Jays The Three Little Pigs The Man who planted trees Africa Attendance We continue to encourage good attendance by awarding ‘Richard the Bear’ to the class with the highest weekly attendance, and also by giving 100% attendance certificates at the end of each term. Our overall attendance is currently 96.1% which is in line with the expectation for good attendance of at least 96%. Please help us to maintain this level of attendance, by sending your children into school every day, unless of course they are genuinely too ill to attend. Also, please remember that term time leave can only be authorised in the most exceptional circumstances, and that unauthorised travel may now result in a fine from the Local Authority. A massive well done to the 55 children who received 100% attendance certificates at the end of last term (for both autumn and spring term)and 77 children got certificates for 100% attendance during the spring term. – Fingers crossed for even more in July! Making a positive Contribution The Book Fair took place during March, from which we raised a commission of £223 for the school; this will be used to purchase new guided readers. We raised £547.58 for Red Nose Day. We are still collecting Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers. Please send any vouchers into school to allow us to benefit from this offer. Bikes & scooters - We are delighted that so many children are taking the healthy option and coming to school on their bikes and scooters. However, as we only have limited space to store bikes during the school day we have had to put in place the following timetable for the remainder of the summer term. This is a timetable for leaving bikes and scooters in the store in the back playground, please don’t leave bikes and scooters in the front playground as this is reserved for the use of the junior children. You will see that each class has 2 days in the week when they will be able to leave bikes. We are endeavouring to provide more storage for the autumn term as riding bikes is becoming ever more popular.
