INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR RECORDS INSTRUCTIONS FOR SURGERY DAY CLINIC LOCATION  Market on State, to the right of Dunham’s. Enter through double glass doors. PLEASE – DO NOT STOP OR PARK IN FRONT OF DIALYSIS CENTER. DROP‐OFF  DOGS between 9 and 10 a.m.  CATS between 10 and 11 a.m. We will call when pet is ready for pick up, usually early afternoon to late evening depending on number of surgeries. You MUST be prepared to pick up at any time. Volunteers cannot stay after clinic closes. BRING TO CLINIC  One crate per pet labeled with pet’s name and owner’s last name.  Line cat carriers with newspaper.  Rabies Certificate (not tag) if your pet is up‐to‐date.  Proof of financial assistance qualifications if you did not have them at the registration.  Cash if you owe. No other forms of payment accepted. FOOD & WATER  Adult Dogs and Cats. Do not give your adult cat or dog food after 10 p.m. the night before surgery, and do not give water the morning of surgery. If your pet accidentally eats the morning of surgery, let a volunteer know at drop‐off. Surgery can still be done 4 to 6 hours after the meal.  Puppies and kittens. Pets younger than 4 months should not be fasted since they cannot maintain normal blood sugar levels for long time periods. Feed half the normal amount at breakfast. Give water as usual. FLEA & HEARTWORM PREVENTION  Veterinarian approved flea and tick preventives (Advantage, Frontline, Vectra) can be applied before or after surgery. Over‐the‐counter flea preventives (Heartz, BioSpot, Sergeants) are potentially toxic and should never be used. Flea collars are also toxic, especially in combination with anesthesia, and will be thrown away during exam.  Veterinarian prescribed heartworm prevention (Advantage Multi, Interceptor, Heartgard, Iverhart, Trifexis) is safe to give before or after surgery. PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS  If your pet has been given any prescription or over‐the‐counter medications during the month prior to surgery, let us know so we can prevent possible complications with anesthetic or pain medications. If your pet gets long‐term medication (phenobarbital, prednisone, insulin), contact your veterinarian to determine if your pet should receive medication on the day of surgery. NO REFUNDS. WE WILL RESCHEDULE IF NECESSARY. [email protected] | PO Box 765 Athens OH 45701│Recorded Info Line 740-592-6047

Rev 2/10/17 NURSING ANIMALS  If your female dog or cat recently had a litter, be sure that puppies/kittens have been separated from the mother for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery. The presence of milk in the mammary glands can increase the risk of infection, the chances of the incision opening, and/or can delay healing. PEDIATRIC SURGERIES  RASCAL routinely spays and neuters puppies and kittens as young as 8 weeks who weigh at least 2 lbs. Because younger pets may have higher risk from anesthetic, each patient will be evaluated prior to surgery. Pediatric patients with poor health will be rescheduled. WHAT TO EXPECT FOR DAY OF SURGERY  Arrive at scheduled drop‐off time to check‐in your pet. All pets must be restrained upon arrival. Bring dogs on a secure leash with a crate. Bring cats in separate carriers. If you do not have a crate or leash, let a volunteer know prior to getting your pet out of the car. 
Since there are up to 50 surgeries per day, there’s a good chance your pet will not have surgery until later in the day. Please be available, or have someone else available, throughout the day to pick up your pet after surgery. 
You will be asked to fill out patient information, including a history form. If your pet is up‐to‐date with a rabies vaccination, you must present a current certificate (not tag) from a licensed veterinarian. The certificate must have your pet’s information. The RASCAL Clinic veterinarian will not accept rabies tags or incomplete forms, handwritten forms, or vaccine booklets as proof. RASCAL requires that all dogs and cats presented for sterilization be up‐to‐date with rabies vaccinations. If your pet is not up‐to‐date, RASCAL will administer the vaccine on the surgery day. 
Once your pet is checked in, RASCAL will examine him/her for overall health (does not apply to feral cats). If your pet is not considered healthy enough for surgery, RASCAL will contact you. You may need to reschedule surgery. If your pet is healthy, he/she will be sedated to decrease anxiety in preparation for the anesthesia. Once ready for surgery, your pet will be given an injectable anesthetic followed by intubation and gas anesthesia for maintenance (intubation does not apply to male cats). Once surgery is complete, a volunteer will call to let you know when to pick up your pet. 
When you pick up, you will be given written instructions for after‐surgery pet care. If you bring a stray or feral (wild) cat, please ask for special instructions. The type of surgery and other medications your pet may be taking could determine the type of pain medication given after surgery. The veterinary staff may ask for a local pharmacy number or provide a written prescription if your pet requires a medication the clinic does not carry. 
