CALAMITY DAY LESSON PLAN LESSON PLAN ONE GOAL

CALAMITY DAY LESSON PLAN
LESSON PLAN ONE
Science/ Ag Science
GOAL
Determine how atoms combine to make stable molecules.
OBJECTIVE
Use common materials to create visual examples of atoms and their parts
Arranged as they are in a neutral atom.
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY
Experimentation/ manipulation of objects to simulate parts of atoms.
ASSIGNMENT
STEP ONE
STEP TWO
STEP THREE
1. Separate M&M’s into individual colors.
2. Assign a color for each part of the atom
3. Choose 4 different elements to model, 1 from period 1
1 form period 2, 1 from period 3, and 1 from period 4.
Use elements from families 1,2 13,14,15,16,17,or 18.
4. Put the correct number of each part (Proton, Neutron, and electron)
In their respective location (nucleus, or shells).
5. Draw the model on paper to turn in for grading.
6. Identify at least 1 element for each of your models which your model would likely bond with to
become stable.
7. Show the ring diagram for each element modeled and give the ionic charge for each element.
STUDENT ADJUSTMENT
May use buttons, or colored marshmallows, or skittles for the lab.
EVALUATION
Drawings and included information will be graded.
