Honors Chemistry Unit 15 Nuclear Chemistry (2013 – 2014) Nuclear chemistry/reactions o Radioactive decay & types of radiation o Radioactive decay rate Half-life o Fission o Fusion 1 We are learning to: 1. 2. 3. Identify the different types of nuclear reactions Compare and contrast fusion and fission. Calculate half-life We are looking for: 1a. Identify and calculate the following nuclear reactions (alpha, beta, gamma, positron, and electron capture) 2a. Fission is the splitting of a nucleus into small fragments 2b. Fusion is the combining of two nuclei 3a. Half-life is a measure of the rate of radioactive decay, or the amount of time it takes for half of a radioactive sample initially present to decay to its products. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
