September 24, 2012
theglobalconversation.tumblr.com | www.socialgoodsummit.com
One day: September 24th, 2012, during the third annual Social Good Summit
Three hubs: New York (92nd Street Y), Nairobi, Beijing
50 + countries, including Somalia, Bhutan, El Salvador, Benin, Uzbekistan and more
120 meetups and counting
Two questions:
• How can new media and technology create solutions in my community?
• What can the world learn from my community?
An infinite number of ideas
Six partners: Mashable, the United Nations Foundation, 92nd Street Y, Ericsson, the United Nations Development Program and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
One goal: to re-define the idea of a “summit” and create an unprecedented, truly global, conversation about
how we can all use social media to tackle the world’s problems.
One hashtag: #SGSGlobal
Details for September 24
• At midnight Eastern Time the Global Conversation begins in Beijing.
• By 9 am ET the baton passes to Nairobi.
• At noon ET, people in all three Global Conversation hubs come together via satellite for a brief trans-continental discussion.
• After this discussion, the focus returns to New York City for the final day of the Social Good Summit.
• Conversations in New York (as for the other days of the Social Good Summit) will be live-streamed to the
world in English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish and Russian.
• Simultaneously, smaller groups around the world – organized via Mashable’s global Meetup network,
UNDP offices around the world and others – gather to share ideas with people in their own communities
and, via Facebook and Twitter, the global community.
• One hashtag - #SGSGlobal gives voice to people in even hard-to-reach places.
• One Day on Earth deploys its global resources to shoot dozens of these Meetups.
After September 24
• In the months after the September 24, the Social Good Summit partnership releases highlights from
Global Conversation Meetups and share the ideas that bubbled up.
• Working with One Day on Earth, SGS partners produce a documentary that shows the common drive and
distinctive ideas that energized the Global Conversation.
