Hope Village– Construction Continues!
The construction at Hope Village continues as we work diligently
towards completing the second ten homes by the end of August.
Our house sponsors have been an absolutely necessary tool in
making this last phase of the project possible. Mervin Wolf
stepped in early on during this project, and committed to
sponsoring a home. This winter, on the Martin Luther King Jr.
Day of Service, Kaiser Permanente brought 154 volunteers onto
the jobsite and pre-built all the walls of the first six homes.
American Lumber not only graciously sponsored another one of
our homes, but also, in conjunction with Modesto Sunrise Rotary,
came out to the jobsite and raised the walls of one of the homes.
Goldenstate Construction has been another wonderful home
sponsor. Trying something new, they spent a Saturday in a
competition against Applegate Johnston to see who could raise the walls of their lot the fastest.
The second phase of Hope Village has been successful thus far because of all the wonderful
support and enthusiasm from various groups. One group that we are partnering with on this
phase of construction is the Construction Craft Training Center. Students have been on the
jobsite for weeks at a time and have
so far completed all the rough
electrical work for us in-kind on
three of our homes! They are
planning to help complete all ten of
our homes.
We have loved seeing Modesto
Rotary, Lowe’s Women’s Build,
Work for Success, two Love
Modesto’s and E&J Gallo Winery, to
just name a small portion of the
groups who have volunteered their
time and energy to
build Hope Village.

“The amount and regularity of our volunteers is making this project
successful,” explained Cecelia Gonzales, Volunteer Coordinator. “We are
constantly looking for more individuals and
groups interested in volunteering on the jobsite.”
If you, or a group you are a part of are interested
in volunteering, please contact Cecelia at

The Hope Habitat Can Bring:
Family Partner Stories
The Martinez Family
The Arzabal Family
“My name is Patricia Arzabal, and my experience
in partnering with Habitat for Humanity has been
a blessing. It took a friend letting me know about
the program and listening to two radio stations
before I decided to apply for the program. I never
thought it would only be a short time before I
would be sitting in my beautiful living room with
my children writing about this blessing.
Ten years ago, I would have laughed if someone
told me I would someday be a homeowner. I was
a homeless drug addict and everything else that
goes along with that life. After I went through
recovery and turned my life over to God, my life
started to change in a very positive way. I went
back to school, received my GED, and started
working at a couple different jobs.
Habitat for Humanity was, and is, the next piece
of the puzzle that was scattered in my life 10
years ago and is now almost complete. I look at
this blessing, this home, as a lighthouse to others
in my community, as proof that life is worth living if you live it the right way.”
The Martinez family joined
Habitat’s homeowner program in May in order to gain
the independence and freedom that comes with being
homeowners. With almost
250 sweat equity hours
completed, they are well on
their way. Maria Martinez
and her two daughters, Karla
(2) and Alondra (7), found
out about Habitat through the
news and are excited for
what a Habitat home can do
for them.
Maria, a hard-working single-mom, is employed full time at
Morena’s Taqueria. She usually wakes up, gets her daughter
ready for school, drops her daughter off, and then heads over
to the construction site for a couple hours before going to
work. Now that her daughter is on summer vacation, Maria is
completing even more of her sweat equity hours. “I want to get
in as many hours as possible,” explained Maria. “I want to do
my hours as fast as I can so that I am done.”
As renters, Maria and her daughters have been living in a
25x18 bedroom of a private residence. One room is not nearly
enough room for the three of them, and the close quarters can
cause unnecessary stress and tension. “I want to give my kids
more space,” said Maria. “With a Habitat home, we will have
more space and a backyard.” However, the best thing about a
Habitat house is that “it will be ours.” Maria explained that she
wants her money to go towards their own house as opposed to
rent payments. With a Habitat home, the Martinez family will
finally have enough room to grow and thrive, on their own.
We are looking for donations of materials, in-kind services and funds to help with
the completion of Hope Village.
Please contact Jessica Hill at 209-575-4585 ext. 115 to donate.

HABITATNOW
IS BACK FOR
THE SUMMER!
HabitatNOW is Habitat’s youth program for anyone between the ages of
10 and 18. This is a special opportunity for youth to participate on
construction sites that are normally closed to those under 16. We will be
building fences, painting houses, landscaping, and, most importantly,
lending a hand to families who need a hand up.
