The Choir performed at Disney Springs (formerly Downtown Disney), and the Marching Band marched down Main Street USA in the Magic Kingdom. While there, students visited Hollywood Studios, Magic Kingdom, and EPCOT Center. Hiller Highlights is the newsletter of Trinity Area School District - Home of the Hillers! Mrs. Abbondanza’s Kindergarten class at Trinity East joined with Ms. Shaw’s fourth grade to share a fun winter story “Snowmen At Night.” Each fourth grade student paired up with a Kindergartener to follow the sequence and create their own snowmen designs. The Kindergarten students extended the story by writing what they would do with their snowman at night and drew pictures to illustrate their writings. A fun time was had by all! On Dec 27th, Sierra Kotchman scored 27 points and became the leading scorer in Trinity High School girls basketball history during a 58-41 victory over Chartiers Valley. Kotchman passed Karen Donley’s total of 1,282 points when the senior hit a jump shot with 5:55 to play in the second quarter. Kotchman now stands at 1,300+ points for her varsity career. Donley played in the late 1980s. Trinity defeated Montour 49-30 to advance in the WPIAL Wrestling Team playoffs. The Hillers will travel to Albert Gallatin on Monday at 7 p.m. for the next round. This is the 4th straight season the Hillers have advanced to the team tournament. The Lady Hillers Basketball team has clinched a WPIAL playoff spot for next month's tournament, and currently have a record of 14 wins and 1 loss. Trinity’s Rifle team had a big win over Bethel Park - 800-63 to 799-68. The Hillers will compete for the WPIAL team championship on February 7th. The Boys Swim team has begun the season with 6 straight victoriesIts a great day to be a Hiller! How sweet it is! As a culminating fun activity, as well as a real-life application of a unit on saturation, the fifth grade students at Trinity West mixed, weighed, grew and observed salt crystals, citric acid crystals, Epsom salt crystals – and now sugar crystals. Although rock candy can be made at home simply from water and sugar, color and a choice of cherry, strawberry, raspberry or orange flavoring was added. The students will observe the crystals and take notes so that they may become experts when trying to make Rock Candy at home. It will take a week or two – maybe more-as the saturated sugar solution is about 50 times greater than the other saturated solutions. On Saturday, January 14, 2017, bestselling children’s author and illustrator Patricia Polacco presented to students and families at Trinity High School. The event was sponsored by the Trinity High School Student Council as their spring community service project to promote literacy. Patricia Polacco is the award-winning illustrator, designer, and creator of more than 115 beloved children’s books, including The Keeping Quilt, The Blessing Cup, Fiona’s Lace, Junkyard Wonders, Thank you, Mr. Falker, The Trees of the Dancing Goats, Babushka’s Doll, and My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother. As part of her presentations, Patricia shared the piece of meteor rock that inspired her first published story “Meteor!” Students were invited to touch the meteor and make a wish following three simple rules: you cannot wish for money, you cannot wish to change someone, and you cannot wish for anything bought with money. Some students felt the meteor’s magic tingle through them after they touched the meteor! Patricia also shared the beloved keeping quilt that has been in her family for more than 120 years. She explained the significance of the scraps of fabric and the special heart sewn into the corner of the quilt. She also spoke of the importance of the teachers in her lives, most notably Mr. Felker for whom “Thank You, Mr, Falker” was written. She ended her presentation sharing that each one of us have amazing gifts and we all need to treat each other with kindness. Polacco belongs to a family of storytellers, poets, farmers, teachers, and artists who come from many parts of the world, but mainly Russia. She describes her family members as marvelous storytellers. “My fondest memories are of sitting around a stove or open fire, eating apples and popping corn while listening to the old ones tell glorious stories about their homeland and the past. We are tenacious traditionalists and sentimentalists… With each retelling our stories gain a little more Umph!” Those in attendance enjoyed an amazing experience. Patricia Polacco graciously talked with every guest, personally signed copies of her books, and participated in many photos with her fans. Thank you, Trinity High School Student Council, for this tremendous opportunity to meet the person behind so many wonderful children's books. Career Exploration… Jake Spencer, Sadie Presto, Christopher (Matt ) Day, Jayme Britton, Alayna Cappelli, Robert Gardner, Caleb White, James Fowler Trinity students were selected to attend a career exploration workshop at OpenArc Technology in Wexford, PA. Students participated in various project-based activities commonly executed in business and technology career paths. One of the key tasks was the development of a mobile application that would be implemented in the Pittsburgh market. Students worked collaboratively to plan, design, implement and pitch their idea to OpenArc staffers. Ideas were well received and Trinity students excelled with both their teamwork throughout the process and end product. The students learned the value of commitment, networking and investing in long-term relationships for today's 21st century workplace. "The trip to OpenArc was time well spent. What their company does is one of the career paths that I am interested in pursuing. Saying that, this trip showed me what has to be done to develop a quality website or mobile application. I learned the planning process that a webpage goes through before it's build is complete. They also made sure to explain specific jobs within their company and how they contribute to the building of websites and mobile applications. In addition, the OpenArc staff educated us on some of the key components of business, for example; the importance of not burning bridges and networking throughout the industry that you work in." -Matthew Day Hiller Highlights is the newsletter of Trinity Area School District - Home of the Hillers!
