The Indian Ocean
The Indian Ocean is the third largest of the five oceans and lies between Africa, the
Southern Ocean, Asia, and Australia. Its deepest point is in the Diamantina Trench
reaching a depth of 8,047 m. The Indian Ocean covers 20% of the water on the
Earth's surface and includes the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf.
The islands in the Indian Ocean are known for having beautiful beaches and are very
popular tourist destinations. The most popular islands known to tourists are the
Seychelles, Mauritius and the Maldives. Madagascar (the fourth largest island in the
world) is also located in the Indian Ocean.
The Indian Ocean is widely used for transportation. Ships can reach the Indian Ocean
from the Mediterranean Sea by sailing through the Suez Canal in Egypt. Large tankers
transport much of the world's oil from the Persian Gulf.
Endangered animal life in the Indian Ocean includes seals, turtles, whales and the
dugong.
