MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD
MISS K. MARSHALL
Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you enjoy this edition of the Noadswood Blazer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all pupils, colleagues and parents for their
welcome and support for me this term - I have enjoyed it very much as you know from my half term newsletter, the next of which will be in
February. It has been a real pleasure to welcome lots of pupils to my office for a whole host of positive reasons, to talk to them about a range
of enrichment activities they are involved with, such as their poetry or their sport, or their learning in a particular subject... There will be lots
more of those conversations as they are very important indeed to sustaining a climate for success and mutual trust and respect, as well as for
pupils not to be anonymous to their new Headteacher.
As I write, I am looking forward to the end of term events: the Christmas Concert, the Gym and Dance Show and the end of term assemblies.
And before we know it, we will be in to the new term, with a Spring Concert ahead (to which I hope to add our new Wind Band I have really
enjoyed working with since the start of November!) and our production of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ that the Drama Group are excited about, too. I
am very proud, reading this newsletter, of all of the community at Noadswood and all the things they do to make it such a thriving place. I do
wish you all a wonderful Christmas break and a very happy and peaceful 2017 ahead.
Stonehenge Rocks!
Earlier in December Mr Stamp and Mrs Way took 10 Navigators
and 4 primary school students to visit the incredible Neolithic
monuments of Stonehenge and Avebury. The wind was biting but
the cold exposure provided a dramatic backdrop for the sarsen
and blue stones, some that had travelled all the way from Wales!
Whilst many students preferred the iconic site of Stonehenge
with its newly renovated visitor centre, others (including Mr
Stamp) found our guided tour around the earthworks and stones
of Avebury to be the highlight of the trip. Being able to touch
the unfinished stones, some that weighed over 100 tonnes and
had stood in that place for thousands of years was a humbling
experience. If you choose to visit, be careful eating your lunch by
one. We saw the crushed remains of a medieval worker that had
been excavated from underneath a fallen stone!

Kimberley aiming for
European medals
Spreading a little happiness
Pupils at Noadswood worked in their Tutor Groups and
with friends to support the local Rotary Club Shoebox
Campaign by filling 50 shoe boxes to be distributed to
children across Eastern Europe and provide them with
some Christmas happiness.
Waterside Rotary Club have now collected over 400 shoeboxes that will transform Christmas for many unfortunate
children around the world.
Noadswood’s Kimberley Barnes
is making great progress in
her Taekwondo career of late.
She recently competed at the
British National Taekwondo
Championships held at the
Copper box Arena at the Queen
Elizabeth Olympic Park in
London. She came 4th overall,
narrowly missing out on a
bronze medal, in a category of 9
competitors. This was in spite of
having a viral infection as well.
Outside of the nationals,
Kimberley is training hard for
European competition next
year including the Austrian
and German opens. She is also
preparing for GB squad trials in
2017. She is hoping to mirror her
sisters success in this area & we
wish her good luck.
Navig8 trip to Portsmouth Dockyards
In Navig8 this term students are investigating ‘What Makes the South Unique’. Students studying Portsmouth Dockyards took a trip to the new
Mary Rose museum and had a guided tour with Mike who shared a wealth of information about the battle that took place in the Solent when
the French tried to attack Portsmouth in 1545. Beginning in the museum at the hull of the Mary Rose, students saw films re-enacting aspects
of life on board projected onto the remains of the ship as well as some of the thousands of items recovered from the Solent. After reaching the
top deck, they stepped into the air lock before entering the room the ship wreck sits in and were shown guns and artillery recovered. In groups
students re-enacted firing the guns, planned the attack
for France and the defence for England in 1545 as well
as dressing up in Tudor clothing.
In the afternoon, students learnt about the life of a
Tudor Surgeon on board the Mary Rose and considered
different medical techniques used to treat cooks with
burns, archers hurt in battle and sick soldiers.
Returning to school the students look forward to using
their new knowledge to write their article for the class
magazine and enjoyed History coming alive.

Science Leaders welcome Orchard Junior pupils
In November, a group of Year 5 and 6’s came to Noadswood School to
be involved in a variety of Science experiments with Mrs Guppy.
At the beginning, Mrs Guppy showed a demonstration called “the giant
snake” which illustrated how chemicals can react with heat. At the end,
the pupils saw the “marshmallow man” demonstration. This is an experiment where you a vacuum is used to lower the pressure and make the
marshmallow man expand!
The other experiments were: placing skittles in water to watch the colours diffuse, putting marshmallows in syringes to compress them and
see the effect of pressure on them, examining plant cells and identifying
where the xylem vessels are and dropping food colouring into full fat
milk then using washing up liquid to make it disperse.
Overall, everyone enjoyed the experience and we are looking forward
to repeating the activities with the next group of pupils in January.

Noadswood pupils perform at Southampton Literacy Showcase
Southampton’s Poet Laureate, Matt West, hosted this year’s ‘So Speak: Words in the City’ literary showcase at Mettrick’s Cafe on 29th October. The
event, which showcases local poets, writers and spoken-word performers, was a great success and attended by Hampshire poets both young and old.
Standing proudly alongside the professional writers and performers were two pupils from Noadswood. Lily Wiseman and Katie Mead-Green, both in
Year 10 at the school, performed original poems written for the Wessex Schools Poetry Slam competition that took place this summer.
Lily and Katie’s success at the Wessex Slam, where young poets
from schools across the region compete against each other to
show off their composition and performance skills, guaranteed
their invitation to ‘Words in the City’. It provided a great opportunity
to show off their literary talents to the wider public beyond the
competition.
Speaking after performing her moving poem about finding your
true identity, Katie Mead-Green said, “I was nervous and my hands
were shaking but it was really exciting too.” She added, in true
poetic style, “I felt if I let go of my paper, it would fly away like a bird.”
Mr Jim Wyatt – English Teacher said:
“Noadswood continues its proud tradition of encouraging young writers, artists, musicians and sporting competitors
and this latest success just goes to show what hard work can achieve.”

U16 Girls Hockey win the league again!
For the 2nd year in a row Noadswood U16 girls have won the New Forest School’s hockey league. The team had 5 games to play
over the last 2 months scoring a total of 25 goals and only conceding 2! The only game they didn’t win was against Arnewood
which they drew 1-1 ( they were missing 3 players who were at a rugby tournament.) Each match was fought well and “set plays”
practiced at training finally came off. We even managed to
convert a few short corners by bringing Felicity Guimaraes up from defence to take the strike at goal. The squad
have trained every Friday after school since the start of
the term and it was great to be able to give most girls a
game at the end.
Results of each game:
Ringwood 5-0 win, Arnewood 1-1, Burgate 2-1 win, New
Forest Academy 4-0 win, Priestlands 5-0 win and Testwood 8-0 win!
The main team consisted of:
Sarah Gouding ( Captain), Ellie Scudder, Felicity Guimaraes, Erin O’Farrell, Kate Sheppard, Lauren Scudder, Anne
Wedenburg, Aimee Fletcher, Maddie Gillepsie, Helena Bailey, Emily Chippendale, Emily Mogg, Rose Brown, Georgia
Davies.
HOUSE NEWS
It has been a very busy but successful start to the new academic year for Wilverley. All year groups have been getting stuck into a number of
different events around school and are working hard to earn house points. Year 7 tutor groups and some vertical tutor groups supported the
shoebox appeal with the Rotary, the local members were delighted to collect their contributions at the beginning of November. Wilverley
pupils have chosen the Southampton Hospital Charity for this academic year and we look forward to hearing what pupils have planned for
next term as fundraising events.
Our senior prefect team; Ellie Scudder, Harriet Mintram and Chloe Wright have also been working closely with our prefects and with Year 10
Tutor Buddies to help Year 7 settle into life at Noadswood. Year 7 took part in a problem solving day, although initially the weather wasn’t
very kind, it was a pleasure to join W-ERO in the morning and W-MGU later in the day on the different challenges. Pupils tested their reaction
times, moved teams around courses using very little equipment and worked exceptionally well in their teams. The Problem Solving Company
commented on their fantastic team work, support to each other and enthusiasm.
Wilverley pupils this term competed with brilliant success in the New Forest Cross Country, represented the school in many sporting teams
and raised lots of money for Children in Need. Last year the school launched E Praise to earn house points and many weeks this term, Wilverley
have been edging ahead of the other houses. All the great participation by Wilverley pupils this term with extra-curricular clubs as well as
excellent participation in learning is currently being calculated to be added to the House Cup scores; we’ve heard Wilverley is looking quite
strong.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
