Español 3 H Guía de Repaso Examen Final Your final exam will be made up of the following sections, each a percentage of the overall exam grade: Vocabulary and Grammar (40%) 1. Know all the vocabulary from Ch. 1 and Ch. 2. 2. Know how to form the regular Subjunctive tense. Remember, you go to the yo form (of the indicative), drop the “o” and add the opposite ending (Ar verbs takes e, es, e, emos, en and Er/Ir verbs take a, as, a, amos, an) (See your notes, guides and text, Ch. 1) 3. Know how to form the Subjunctive of the irregular verbs from the handout you received in class and in your text, Ch. 1. Some irregular forms you should know are: car, gar and zar verbs: c>qu (practique), g>gu (llegue), z>c (empiece) verbs with irregular yo forms (go verbs): pongo, digo, tengo, vengo, traigo, oigo, hago verbs that end in –ger (g>j in yo form only) Recoger>recojo>recoja (subjunctive) these verbs: Ir (vaya), Ser (sea), Saber (sepa), 4. Know how and when use the Subjunctive mood with verbs of doubt, emotion, want and disbelief (DEWD verbs). (See your notes, guides and text, Ch. 1) 5. Be familiar with Subjunctive of Stem changing verbs: AR and ER verbs: no spelling change in nosotros form. (see examples) IR verbs: e>i and o>u in nosotros form only. (durmamos, muramos, prefiramos) Contar (o>ue) yo cuente contemos tú cuentes ella cuente ellos cuenten Perder (e>ie) pierda pierdas pierda Dormir (o>ue) duerma durmamos duermas duerma duerman Pedir (e>i) pida pidas pida perdamos pierdan pidamos pidan 6. Know how to make positive and negative Ud./Uds. commands: To make both commands, use the Ud./Uds. forms of the Subjunctive. (AR verbs take e/en and ER/IR take a/an). To make a command negative, simply put “No” in front of the verb. (Practicar>(No) practique/practiquen, Vender>(No) venda/vendan, Salir>(No) salga/salgan. 7. Know how to correctly put accent marks on words when necessary. Know and be able to apply these 3 simple rules: If a word is stressed on the last syllable and the word ends in a vowel, N or S, put an accent mark. If a word is stressed on the second to last syllable and the word ends in anything BUT a vowel, N or S, put an accent mark. If a word is stressed on the third to last syllable or beyond, always put an accent mark. 8. Remember to always use the Subjunctive after impersonal expressions, unless the expression is one of truth or certainty (Es verdad que or Es cierto que). An impersonal expression always starts with “Es” Some common impersonal expressions you should know are: es interesante, es posible, es imposible, es probable, es improbable, es bueno, es malo, es mejor, es necesario, es importante, es fácil, es difícil. Even if you add “no” to these expressions, we still use the Subjunctive after each. (Es posible que cantemos/No es posible que cantemos, Es bueno que ella coma/No es bueno que ella coma). 9. Remember to always use the Subjunctive after the words Tal vez/Quizás (Perhaps) and Ojalá que (hopefully). For example: Tal vez vengamos pronto. Quizás yo coma pollo hoy. Ojalá que no llueva esta tarde. 10 . Below are some important things you need to know about El Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead): -When is El Día de los Muertos? -What country is it mainly celebrated in? -Who celebrates El Día de los Muertos? (Children, old people, etc.) -What is the Hispanic attitude about death? How is it different from how we view death? -What do parents in Mexico do to help their children be more accepting of death? Know these 9 terms: 1. Las calaveras- Skull made of sugar or other items like wood, paper or clay. 2. El pan de muerto- Dead bread; traditional bread eaten on “El Día de los Muertos”. 3. Copal-Special incense burnt when food is offered on the altar. 4. Cempasúchil ( “Sempah-SUE-chill”) - The flower of the dead 5. Mano de león- A traditional, small red flower 6. La Ofrenda-An altar; people set up an altar (like a small table) where they put pictures of their deceased loved ones along with food, drinks, flowers and incense. 7. Mole-A chicken dish made with chocolate and chili peppers. 8. Atole de leche- A hot drink made with corn, milk, sugar and cinnamon. 9. Champurrado- Atole de leche with chocolate. Reading (10%) The Reading section will have 2 reading selections, both using grammar and vocabulary discussed this semester as well as previously learned material. Writing (10%) You will be asked to write at least 70 words over your choice of 1 of the following topics: Do you think the voting age (La edad de votar) in the U.S. should be lowered? What are your reasons? What age should it be? OR Write about something funny that happened to you in your life. It could be when you were a child or something that happened to you recently. Listening (20%) In the listening section, you will hear several spoken activities and will answer various questions about what you heard. The vocabulary in the activities will come from Ch. 1 and 2. Speaking (20%) You will be asked 8 questions from the list of questions you received in class.
