E- bike is an adaptable vehicle, mainly for short distances. It is easy to manage and the trailer that is attached to the e-bike allows it to transport larger quantities. They decided not to use ebicycle in future. 15 3.7 OCCAM, Portugal Pilot company Tested evehicles The purpose of use Advantages / benefits Disadvantages / weaknesses CAMARA MUNICIPALITY OF TORRES VEDRAS, Torres Vedras, Portugal 2 x ebicycle 1 e-bike bike was used by one employee to delivery internal mail/documents to the local schools every day: 1 e-bike bike was placed in a pool system, to be used by the employees in travel for local meetings, services, etc. The e-bike used in the pool system presented as a positive experience. The e-bike contributed to the emission and energy consumption reduction in the municipality, addressed social responsibility aspects and contributed to the increase of the municipality productivity and process efficiency. It is difficult to motivate the employees to use it instead of the car. There were a few technical problems, problem e.g., when charged but not being used, the battery shuts off and the e-bike does not work, making it necessary to call maintenance. The weather conditions were also a barrier to the use of e-bikes. SMAS, Torres Vedras, Portugal 1 x escooter The e-scooter was used to perform some of the counter readings of water distributed in the county, thus avoiding the use of a conventional car or normal scooter on some of the routes. The e-scooter was a good solution for shorter distances. It also contributed to the emission and energy consumption reduction in the company, while addressing the issue of social responsibility In general the experience perience was not very positive. The e-scooter was used on urban routes where the distances were smaller. However in many situations, the driver had to take the e-scooter e with him along the street, starting and stopping for very short distances. This caused the battery to loose its autonomy very fast, forcing the driver to return to the services on foot,, since he could not charge the battery anywhere else. else Another negative factor is that due ue to the weight of the batteries, the e-scooter scooter is heavier than a regular scooter. Continued use of e-bikes/escooters in pilot companies E-bikes will be used in future as the municipality has a bike rental system in the city. They decided not to use escooter in the future. 16 3.8 Pilot company IST, Portugal Tested e-vehicles The purpose of use Advantages / benefits CAMISOLA AMARELA, Lisbon, Portugal 1x ecargobike 1x e-scooter E-cargobikes were used in cycle logistics and e escooters s were used for deliveries to the outskirts of the city MARUJO RESTAURANT, Oporto, Portugal 1x e-scooter Delivery of meals at home The introduction of an escooter allowed the company to: - replace some services by bike, running longer distances in a shorter time; - increase their services while respecting the initial concept (ecologic deliveries). Regarding the e-cargo-bike, the experience has been very positive. The electric support of the cargo bike provides more efficient deliveries, reliability and confort. The introduction of an escooter improved the image of the restaurant. Moreover, with the introduction of an e-scooter they started a new service of home deliveries to their regular customers. Disadvantages / weaknesses Continued use of e-bikes/e-scooters in pilot companies Initially, the e-scooter was used in deliveries to the outskirts of Lisbon. However, the low autonomy of the battery along with high recharge periods was not feasible. The main disadvantages were high recharge time (3 to 6 hours), high purchase cost, and few safe parking spots in the city. They will continue to use e-cargo-bike in the future. Since the pilot started tarted less than 1 month ago, there is no weaknesses to report yet. They will continue to use e-scooter in the future. 17 4 CONCLUSIONS : Identifications of positive and negative aspects EXPERIENCE WITH THE USE OF E-BIKES/E-SCOOTERS POSITIVE ASPECTS (ADVANTAGES/OPPORTUNITIES) NEGATIVE ASPECTS (CHANLLENGES/BARRIERS) o Bigger visibility of the pilot company and their products/services among o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o customers in the local environment Corporate Social Responsibility enhancement for the company Cost savings Easy access to any location in urban areas Efficiency and productivity of logistics processes Emission reduction Good feedback from clients – company image improvement Green image Increased service quality, flexibility and accessibility Less polluting than cars Low energy consumption Low maintenance More efficient and faster delivery compared to vans in the city center Offering a new service to customers - increasing the competitiveness and attractiveness of the existing offer Promotion of company - great way to achieve market enlargement Sustainability o Lack of adequate charging stations o Limited use because of limited range which decreases in hilly areas – not suitable for every part of the urban/rural area o Negative attitude of employees towards the use of e-bikes/e-scooters o Technical problems, malfunctions (e.g. batteries, flat tires, broken pedals, etc.) o The low autonomy and long period of battery recharge that do not allow deliveries in the outskirts of the city or over longer distances in rural area o Weather conditions (bad conditions in using in winter time) o Weight of e-bike/e-scooter 5 CONCLUSIONS : Proposed Improvements EXPERIENCE WITH THE U USE OF E-BIKES/E-SCOOTERS PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS : o o o o o o o o Manufacturers anufacturers should provide a second battery in case of rapid discharge. Purchase cost of the e-bike bike is considered too high compared to o the cost of a regular scooter. One pilot company recommends ecommends more subsidies for e e-bike purchase. E-bike is too heavy avy and requires some time for adapt adaptation by users. Local authorities can speed up adoption of E E-bikes by providing subsidies for employment for daily transport to work. It would be good to modify the e e-bike bike for the transportation of food and to equip it with a thermo container to keep food warm. Refrigeration should also be available The bike could be redesigned to transport bigger items of furniture 19 6 SUMMARY The use of e-bikes and e-scooters by pilot companies has, in most cases, elicited a positive response, as evidenced by the results.
