Creating Fill in Multiple Blanks Questions
Fill in Multiple Blanks questions use variables to identify different places in the text for Students to
enter missing values. An example might be, “In first aid, the mnemonic ABC stands for _____, _____,
and _____.” Separate sets of answers are defined for each variable. Variables must be unique and
placed within square brackets [ ].
1. Ensure Edit Mode is On (Figure 1).

2. Navigate to the location in the module where the test is situated.
3. Hover over the test in question, then click the ActionLinks pull down menu after the test
title and select Edit the Test (Figure 2).

4. The Test Canvas page for the test is displayed.
5. From the Create Question menu select the Fill in Multiple Blanks question type (Figure 3).

6. In the Question Title field enter a Question Title.
7. In the Question Text field enter the Question Text. For example, “In first aid, the mnemonic
ABC stands for [a], [b], and [c].” (Figure 4)

8. Click the Allow Partial Credit check box to allow credit for partly getting the answer correct.
9. Click Next.
10. On the next page for each variable define first the number of answer options available for
the variable and then, when the form has updated to show that number of text fields, type
in the answer options available for each variable (Figure 5). Repeat this action for all the
variables in the question. To ensure case sensitivity of the answers click the Case Sensitive
check box next to the relevant answer option. To remove and answer option click the
Remove button alongside that answer option.

11. Click Next.
12. In the Correct Response Feedback field enter any desired feedback for the correct response
(optional)
13. In the Incorrect Response Feedback field enter any desired feedback for incorrect responses
(optional).
14. Under the Categories and Keywords heading, click the Add button alongside either
Categories, Topics, Levels of Difficulty or Keywords to add tags for any of these items to this
question (Figure 6). Click OK after each one has been completed. These are all optional.

15. Add any required Instructor Notes.
16. Click Submit. The question is created and added to the test.
