3rd Grade Math Second Six Weeks Greetings parents of 3rd graders! The following information is a snapshot view of what your child will be learning the second six weeks. The student will determine a value of a collection of coins and bills: What is the value in dollars and cents? Answer: $16.45 or Sixteen dollars and forty-five cents In the following problem, the students are making the connection between repeated addition and multiplication. For this problem we can determine that we are counting by 4’s, also known as multiples of 4. Mr. Perry has 6 vans scheduled for a class field trip. Each van will carry 4 people. How many people will the vans carry for this field trip? Addition Sentence: 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 24 Number Sentence in Words: 6 groups of 4 equal 24 Multiplication Number Sentence: 6 x 4 = 24 Our third graders will also be working with arrays (a pictorial model) to help them with multiplication facts: There are 3 rows and 4 columns. Addition sentence 3 + 3 + 3+ 3 = 12 Multiplication sentence 3 x 4 = 12 The students will also begin working on their division skills. You may hear them talk about fact families, which shows the relationship between multiplication and division. Fact families have 4 number sentences, 2 multiplication and 2 division. Example: 3 x 4 = 12 4 x 3 = 12 12 ÷ 4 = 3 12 ÷ 3 = 4 Frida has a collection of 27 glass eggs she wants to display on 3 shelves. She put the same number of glass eggs on each shelf. How many glass eggs did she place on each shelf? Answer: 9 (Separate or divide the eggs into three groups, with each group having an equal amount). Our students will also be learning about perimeter and how to find the perimeter of geometric shapes. Sarah Lee baked a big cake in the shape of a house. She needed to know the perimeter of the cake in order to make enough icing to trim the edges of the cake. a) If all sides are the same length and one side measures 19 inches, what is the perimeter of the cake?
