SUNDAY WORSHIP BULLETIN SUPPLEMENT
Musical Centering: The Deer’s Cry
Words and Music by Shaun Carrick Davey (b. 1948)
I arise today through the strength of heaven
Light of sun, radiance of moon
Splendor of fire, speed of lightning
Swiftness of wind, depth of the sea
Stability of earth, firmness of rock
I arise today through God’s strength to pilot me
God’s eye to look before me
God’s wisdom to guide me
God’s way to lie before me
God’s shield to protect me
From all who wish me ill, afar and near
Alone and in a multitude
Against ev’ry cruel merciless power
That may oppose my body and soul
Christ with me, Christ before me
Christ behind me, Christ in me
Christ beneath me, Christ above me
Christ on my right, Christ on my left
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down
Christ when I rise, Christ to shield me
Christ in the heart of ev’ryone who thinks of me
Christ in the mouth of ev’ryone who speaks of me
I arise today.
Call to Worship
One:
Many:
Lift up your voice and call out to God.
We cry out, believing that God hears us.
One:
Many:
Come together and wait for God.
We come together, trusting that God is still seeking.
One:
Many:
Surely God’s presence is here with us now.
We wait in hope, for God’s steadfast love lifts our hearts.
One:
Come, worship the LORD.

Opening Songs: Gather Us In
Words and Music: Marty Haugen (b. 1950)
Here in this place new light is streaming
Now is the darkness vanished away
See in this space our fears and our dreamings
Brought here to you in the light of this day
Gather us in, the lost and forsaken
Gather us in, the blind and the lame
Call to us now, and we shall awaken
We shall arise at the sound of our name
We are the young, our lives are a myst’ry
We are the old who yearn for your face
We have been sung throughout all of hist’ry
Called to be light to the whole human race
Gather us in, the rich and the haughty
Gather us in, the proud and the strong
Give us a heart so meek and so lowly
Give us the courage to enter the song
Here we will take the wine and the water
Here we will take the bread of new birth
Here you shall call your sons and your daughters
Call us anew to be salt for the earth
Give us to drink the wine of compassion
Give us to eat the bread that is you
Nourish us well, and teach us to fashion
Lives that are holy and hearts that are true
Holy God, We Praise Your Name (Hymnal #4, verses 1, 3, 4)
Text: Attr. Ibnaz Franz, c. 1774; trans. Clarence Alphonsus Walworth, 1858, alt
Music: Allgemeines Katholisches Cesangbuch, c. 174; harm. Johann Gottfried Schicht, 1819
Holy God we praise your name; Lord of all, we bow before you
All on earth your scepter claim; all in heaven above adore you
Infinite your vast domain, everlasting is your reign
All apostles join the strain as your sacred name they hallow
Prophets swell the glad refrain, and the blessed martyrs follow
And from morn to set of sun, through the church the song goes on
Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit: three we name you
While in essence only one; undivided God we claim you
And adoring, bend the knee while we own the mystery

Prayer of Confession
O Lord, if you held our sin against us, who could live, who could stand? We seem to have more
faith in death than hope in your promise of life. We seek peace through war and security in
weapons. We abandon the hungry, sick, and dying, and pursue wealth at the expense of
others. And even so, you love us; still there is forgiveness with you! Therefore we worship you;
for you alone, O Lord, can save us from death and redeem us from our sin.
Assurance of Pardon
Hear the word of the Lord! If Jesus Christ dwells in you, the Spirit of God will be your life and
the grace of God will be your righteousness.
And if the Holy Spirit dwells in you, then God, who raised Jesus from the dead, will also give
life to your mortal bodies. Friends, this is the good news of the gospel:
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
Response: I Come with Joy
Words: Brian Wren (b. 1936); Music: American Folk Melody
I come with joy to meet my Lord, forgiven, loved, and free
In awe and wonder to recall His life laid down for me
His life laid down for me
I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed
The new community of love in Christ’s communion bread
In Christ’s communion bread
Chorus:
I come with joy to meet my Lord
I come with joy to meet my Lord
As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, each proud division ends
The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends
And strangers now are friends
And thus with joy we meet our Lord. His presence always near
Is in such friendship better known: we see and praise Him here
We see and praise Him here
Chorus 2x
Scripture: Luke 9:21–27
He sternly ordered and commanded them not to tell anyone, saying, “The Son of Man must
undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be
killed, and on the third day be raised.”
Then he said to them all, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and
take up their cross daily and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and
those who lose their life for my sake will save it. What does it profit them if they gain the
whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words,

of them the Son of Man will be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the
Father and of the holy angels. But truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not
taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God the Father, Maker of both heav’n and earth
And in Jesus Christ, our Savior, God’s own Son of matchless worth
By the Holy Ghost conceived, virgin Mary bore God’s Son
He in whom I have believed, God, Almighty, Three in One
Suffered under Pontius Pilate, crucified for me He died
Laid within the grave so silent, gates of hell He opened wide
And the stone-sealed tomb was empty, on the third day He arose
Into heaven made His entry, Mighty Conqueror of His foes
At God’s right hand He is seated, till His coming, as He said
Final judgment will be meted to the living and the dead
I confess the Holy Spirit has been sent through Christ the Son
To apply salvation’s merit, God the Spirit, Three in One
I believe the Church of Jesus, Holy catholic remains
We are one through all the ages, with communion of the saints
I believe sins are forgiven, that our bodies will be raised
Everlasting life in heaven, Amen, let God’s name be praised!
Communion Songs: Behold the Lamb
Words and Music: Keith and Kristyn Getty & Stuart Townend
Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, slain for us—and we remember
The promise made that all who come in faith find forgiveness at the cross
Chorus:
So we share in the bread of life, and we drink of His sacrifice
As a sign of our bonds of peace/love/grace around the table of the King
The body of our Savior Jesus Christ, torn for you—eat and remember
The wounds that heal, the death that brings us life paid the price to make us one
Chorus
The blood that cleanses every stain of sin, shed for you—drink and remember
He drained death’s cup that all may enter in to receive the life of God
Chorus
And so with thankfulness and faith we rise to respond—and to remember

our call to follow in the steps of Christ as His body here on earth
As we share in His suffering, we proclaim Christ will come again!
And we’ll join in the feast of heaven around the table of the King
Here Is Love
Words and Music: Richard Thomas Bewes, William Edwards, and William Rees
Here is love, vast as the ocean
Lovingkindness as the flood
When the Prince of Life, our Ransom
Shed for us His precious blood
refrain:
Who His love will not remember?
Who can cease to sing His praise?
He can never be forgotten
Throughout Heav’n’s eternal days
On the mount of crucifixion
Fountains opened deep and wide
Through the floodgates of God’s mercy
Flowed a vast and gracious tide
Grace and love, like mighty rivers
Poured incessant from above
And heav’n’s peace and perfect justice
Kissed a guilty world in love
refrain
No love is higher, no love is wider
No love is deeper, no love is truer
No love is higher, no love is wider
No love is like Your love, O Lord
Here is love, vast as the ocean
Lovingkindness as the flood
When the Prince of Life, our Ransom
Shed for us His precious blood
Offering: Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone
Text: Thomas Shepherd, 1665-1739; Tune: Maitland, CM; George N. Allen, 1812-1877, arr. Tony Domenick
Must Jesus bear the cross alone
And all the world so free?
No, there’s a cross for ev’ry one
And there’s a cross for me
refrain: There’s a cross for me
There’s a cross for me
Oh there’s a cross for ev’ryone
And there’s a cross for me

The consecrated cross I’ll bear
Till death shall set me free
And then go home my crown to wear
For there’s a crown for me
refrain
Upon the crystal pavement
Down at Jesus’ pierced feet
Joyful, I’ll cast my golden crown
And His dear name repeat
refrain
O precious cross! O glorious crown!
O resurrection day!
Ye angels, from the stars come down
And bear my soul away
refrain
