Describe the effects of the New Deal in terms of culture and lasting achievements. Main Idea: The New Deal had a lasting effect on many aspects of American life. Summarizing The New Deal • The New Deal did not attempt radical changes to Hix the American economy and it did not end the nation’s suffering. • It did make lasting changes socially and politically. • The New Deal increased the public’s expectations of the president and enhanced American culture by helping artists. FDR Increased The Power Of The President 1937 Recession • The New Deal did improve the economy with massive government spending, national debt rose from $21 billion in 1933 to $43 billion in 1940. • In 1937 the Social Security tax gave Americans less money to spend causing an economic recession. • Labor unions were legalized under the New Deal. They increased their membership (3% in 1933 to 36% in 1945) and power through strikes, collective bargaining, and a minimum wage. The New Deal era also saw some of the country’s most spectacular strikes. Woolworth Department Store SitDown Strike Effects On Social Culture • The arts thrived during the New Deal because Roosevelt believed that the arts were not a luxury that people should give up. • Many works of literature became American classics in the 1930s. Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With The Wind (1936) and John Steinbeck’s The Grapes Of Wrath (1939) were the two most famous novels of the era. • Radio was the most widespread form of entertainment in the 1930s. Radio had comedians, symphony music, opera music, and soap operas. The 2 Most Famous 1930s American Novels Effects On Movies • Movies were hit hard at the start of the depression. • They recovered by offering a double feature or allowing the whole family into the drive‐in for a quarter. • The Marx Brothers and Walt Disney became famous in the 1930s. • Walt Disney created Mickey Mouse cartoons and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). • The Wizard of Oz (1939) is considered one of the greatest movies of all time. Movie Posters Legacies Of The New Deal • Public Works ‐ the New Deal built dams, bridges, buildings, hospitals, and schools. • Government agencies – some are still in use today such as the TVA (electricity), FDIC (banks), and the SEC (stocks). • Social Security the most famous and used New Deal plan today. • Hope the New Deal most importantly restored hope to the American people.
