Pollution and the environment • Pollution in the contamination of the environment, which damages and spoils it due to waste from humans. • The greenhouse effect is the warming of the planet due to the damage of the earths atmosphere from using items which have harmful gases – cars etc. TASK 1 Biggest cause of pollution ? Lowest cause of pollution Identify 10 causes of pollution in the world. (Think of air, sea and land causes of pollution) Then rank these on the opinion line. TASK 2 Reducing pollution • In the following slides are examples of commonly used household items that cause problems for the environment. For each one make notes to explain: 1. Alternatives (what else could be used) to using the product 2. Problems caused by using the product 3. Action by individuals: what can individuals or homes do to help? 4. Action by government – what should Governments do to help? TASK 2 Example Disposable nappies Council could offer reusable nappy incentives Not changing their baby as often They have to be transported to the shop. Introduction of reusable nappies Can not be recycled so they add to land fill sites. Have fewer babies Tax them to make them more expensive so people buy less.
